Altered engagement of autobiographical memory networks in adult offspring of postnatally depressed mothers.

Maternal depression is associated with increased risk for offspring mood and anxiety disorders. One possible impact of maternal depression during offspring development is on the emotional autobiographical memory system. We investigated the neural mechanisms of emotional autobiographical memory in adult offspring of mothers with postnatal depression (N=16) compared to controls (N=21). During fMRI, recordings of participants describing one pleasant and one unpleasant situation with their mother and with a companion, were used as prompts to re-live the situations. Compared to controls we predicte

Validation of the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS) in a sample of women with high-risk pregnancies in France.

UNLABELLED: This research is intended to validate the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in a high-risk pregnant population. METHOD: Sixty women attending antenatal consultations for pregnancy complication in a major Parisian maternity facility were included. They completed the EPDS and were then interviewed according to a standardised psychiatric interview. RESULTS: The study of its sensitivity, specificity and predictive values, with a DSM-IV diagnosis of major depression as the reference, found that 11.5 was the optimal cut-off score (Se 0.80; Sp 0.80). Its validity as an index o

Obesity and pregnancy, an epidemiological and intervention study from a psychosocial perspective.

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity is a growing public health concern in Belgium as well as in other European countries and is now becoming the most common risk factor associated with pregnancy complications with impact on the health of the women and her offspring. At this moment, there is no specific management strategy for obese pregnant women and mothers, focusing on physical health and psychological well-being. OBJECTIVES: We aimed (1) to study the influence of socio-demographic and obstetrical correlates on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) in different regi

[Antidepressant-resistant depression and the bipolar spectrum -- diagnostic and therapeutic considerations].

According to the results of epidemiological studies mood disorders with unipolar (major and minor depressive disorder; dysthymia) or bipolar features are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders. These disorders with their frequent comorbidities (alcohol and/or drug use disorders, smoking, suicide, cardiovascular disorders) pose great public health challenge and cause substantial individual and familar burdens as well. Since SSRIs and other new antidepressant agents entered the market the possibilities to treat depression improved substantially but 25-35 percent of major depressives do n

"Will they know who I am?": Contact between incarcerated mothers and their infants.

The United States has the highest women's incarceration rate, and 2%-4% of incarcerated women are pregnant on admission. Mothers who give birth during incarceration are typically separated from their newborns, jeopardizing their ability to form a maternal relationship. This qualitative study examined the experiences of 27 mothers in Georgia and Pennsylvania who gave birth during incarceration, using semistructured interviews conducted near the time of release to explore how they communicated with their infants, the challenges they encountered, and the impact of separation on their maternal ide

Adverse childhood experiences, resilience, and cannabis use in early motherhood.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is associated with increased risk of substance use in women, including cannabis use during pregnancy. Less is known, however, about how resilience factors moderate the association of ACEs on cannabis use in early motherhood. METHODS: We used survey data from 126 predominately low-income and diverse mothers enrolled in a longitudinal study in the South Central U.S. Multiple logistic regression models evaluated associations between ACEs and cannabis use through three years postpartum, stratified by resilience scores (median split). Living Donation and Pregnancy-Related Complications: State of the Evidence and Call To Action for Improved Risk Assessment.

Living kidney donation and living liver donation significantly increases organ supply to make lifesaving transplants possible, offering survival benefits to the recipients and cost savings to society. Of all living donors, 40% are women of childbearing age. However, limited data exist regarding the effect of donation on future pregnancies and of pregnancy-related complications on postdonation outcomes. In February 2023, the American Society of Transplantation Women's Health Community of Practice held a virtual Controversies Conference on reproductive health, contraception, and pregnancy after

Aortic dissection in pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Pregnancy-associated aortic dissection (AD) is a rare event, with an incidence of 0.0004% per pregnancy. The work of the Aortic Dissection Collaborative identified pregnancy-associated AD as a high-priority topic, despite its rarity. The Pregnancy Working Group, which included physicians and patient stakeholders, performed a systematic literature review of pregnancy-associated AD from 1960 to 2021 and identified 6,333 articles through PubMed, OVID MEDLINE, Cochrane, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science. The inclusion criterion was AD in pregnant populations and exclusion criteria were case report

A randomized controlled trial of a computer-based brief intervention for victimized perinatal women seeking mental health treatment.

Intimate partner victimization (IPV) during the perinatal period is associated with adverse outcomes for the woman, her developing fetus, and any children in her care. Maternal mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety, are prevalent during the perinatal period particularly among women experiencing IPV. Screening and interventions for IPV targeting women seeking mental health treatment are lacking. In the current study, we examine the feasibility, acceptability, and the preliminary efficacy of a brief, motivational computer-based intervention, SURE (Strength for U in Relationshi

Neurodevelopment: The Impact of Nutrition and Inflammation During Preconception and Pregnancy in Low-Resource Settings.

The rapid pace of fetal development by far exceeds any other stage of the life span, and thus, environmental influences can profoundly alter the developmental course. Stress during the prenatal period, including malnutrition and inflammation, impact maternal and fetal neurodevelopment with long-term consequences for physical and mental health of both the mother and her child. One primary consequence of maternal malnutrition, inflammation, and other sources of prenatal stress is a poor birth outcome, such as prematurity or growth restriction. These phenotypes are often used as indications of pr

Perinatal depression impairs placental angiogenesis and fetal growth in mice: protective effects of betaine supplementation.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal depression (PND) is the most common psychiatric disorder experienced during pregnancy and postpartum and is characterized by persistent low mood, difficulty adapting to gestational changes, helplessness, social withdrawal, and, in severe cases, suicidal or infanticidal thoughts. In this study, using a mouse model of PND, we examined the impact of PND on placental angioneurotrophic signaling, namely vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor-1 (VEGFR1), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and determined whether placental hypoxia precipitates impai
