Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Symptoms in Children Adopted from Poland and their Atypical Association Patterns: a Bayesian Approach.

Although high rates of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms have been observed among internationally adopted children, research on these symptoms in Polish adoptees is lacking. Therefore, we examined ADHD symptoms in Polish adoptees and their relationship to pre-adoptive risk factors, that is, time in institutional care, early deprivation, and prenatal alcohol exposure. We further compared the association patterns and gender distribution of ADHD symptoms in children adopted from Poland to those reported in the literature for ADHD symptoms in non-adopted children. Dutch adop

Memory strategy development in children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine whether children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) show the same developmental transition from visual to verbal memory strategies as in non-FASD children and whether this transition was related to executive functioning and vocabulary skills. METHODS: Younger (5-6 years) and older (8-10 years) children with FASD and non-FASD children were tested on a picture memory task. RESULTS: Among both age groups, the non-FASD children performed better than those with FASD. Younger children with FASD appeared to use a visual approach, whereas o

Behavioural, developmental and child protection outcomes following exposure to Class A drugs in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The long-term consequences of intrauterine exposure to Class A drugs are still relatively undocumented, and much of the literature relates to the North American experience, where cocaine use predominates. In Britain, heroin and amphetamine use is more common and, within Britain, patterns of drug use vary. Clearly the long-term educational and welfare needs of these children will be enhanced if the behavioural, developmental and child-care outcomes are known. This study attempts to explore some of these issues. METHODS: The developmental, behavioural and child protection outcomes i

Manic behavior resulting from left frontal closed head injury in an adult with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Closed head trauma has been associated with various neuropsychiatric sequelae, including mood disturbances such as depression and mania. Although mood disturbances can occur with injury to either hemisphere, mania has been primarily associated with right-side frontal lobe injury. We present a case of manic behavior after a closed head injury to the left hemisphere in an adult with preexisting fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

Due to the significant increase in the incidence and prevalence of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in developing and developed nations, it is important that dental professionals recognize this condition. Patients with FAS have orofacial characteristics and various psychological and physical symptoms that may affect a dental treatment plan. This article reviews the prevalence, incidence, alcohol dose response and metabolism, and clinical characteristics of FAS. A case demonstrating moderate signs of the condition is included to illustrate some of the characteristics.

Corpus callosum shape and neuropsychological deficits in adult males with heavy fetal alcohol exposure.

Persons with brain damage consequent to prenatal alcohol exposure have typically been diagnosed with either fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE), depending on facial features. There is great variability of behavioral deficits within these groups. We sought to combine neuroanatomical measures with neurocognitive and neuromotor measures in criteria of greater sensitivity over the variety of consequences of alcohol exposure. To this end, midline curves of the corpus callosum were carefully digitized in three dimensions from T1-weighted MR scans of 15 adult males diagnosed w

Prenatal exposure to alcohol and marijuana: effects on motor development of preschool children.

Gross motor development of preschool children prenatally exposed to alcohol and marijuana was assessed as part of a longitudinal study. Most mothers in the study were light to moderate users and discontinued or decreased use of alcohol and marijuana after the first trimester of pregnancy. The women were of lower socioeconomic status, half of the sample was African-American, and most were single. Gross motor development was evaluated with balance and ball-handling items at 3 years. Balance items included walking on a line, walking on a balance beam, standing on one foot, standing on tiptoes, an

The influence of socioeconomic factors on the occurrence of fetal alcohol syndrome.

This study was designed to compare manifestations of FAS in the offspring of lower and upper middle class chronic alcoholic mothers, and to compare these offspring with those of nonalcoholic controls. There was highly significant difference in the incidence of FAS offspring between upper middle and lower class alcoholic mothers, 4.5% versus 70.9% respectively. Mean weight, length, and head circumference at birth in children of upper middle class alcoholic women was -ISD, those of lower class alcoholic women fell into -2SD. All other parameters, congenital malformation rate, failure to thrive,

Apelin-13 attenuates spatial memory impairment by anti-oxidative, anti-apoptosis, and anti-inflammatory mechanism against ethanol neurotoxicity in the neonatal rat hippocampus.

It has been shown that alcohol consumption by pregnant women can have detrimental effects on the developing fetus and lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Exposure to alcohol in rat pups during this period causes long-term changes in the structure of the animal's hippocampus, leading to impaired hippocampal-related brain functions such as navigation tasks and spatial memory. Apelin-13, a principal neuropeptide with inhibitory effects on neuroinflammation and brain oxidative stress production, has beneficial properties on memory impairment and neuronal injury. The protective effects…

Intrauterine environment-genome interaction and children's development (1): Ethanol: a teratogen in developing brain.

Exposure to ethanol during prenatal development can have devastating consequences on developing fetuses, the so-called fetal alcohol spectrum disordres (FASD). Among FASD, cases that exhibit all of three criterion; 1) central nervous system dysfunction, 2) prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, and 3) characteristic cranial/facial abnormalities, referred as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Children born to drinking mothers may suffer from severe brain damage that is expressed by a variety of behavioral alterations. We examined the effects of ethanol exposure during brain development on brain m

Effect of ethanol on prostacyclin, thromboxane, and prostaglandin E production in human umbilical veins.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of ethanol on prostacyclin (PGI2), prostaglandin E (PGE), and thromboxane (TXA2) production in perfused human umbilical veins. PGI2, PGE, and TXA2 levels were measured from human umbilical veins perfused with either 25, 50, or 100 mM ethanol by radioimmunoassay of their stable metabolites. Alcohol content was measured by an enzymatic spectrophotometric assay. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Fisher's Protected Least Significant Difference Test. Ethanol decreased PGI2 production in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.05). In a concentrat

[Fetal alcohol syndrome--unnecessary suffering which has not become rarer. Eyes are affected in up to 90 per cent of the cases].

Fetal alcohol syndrome, FAS, is characterized by pre- and/or postnatal growth deficiency, CNS dysfunction, typical facial features and evidence of prenatal alcohol exposure. FAS is often an unrecognized diagnosis and is based on clinical symptoms alone. The cognitive and behavioral disturbances have a great influence on the children's ability to learn and on their adult life. FAS is to a great extent found in areas with less than satisfactory socio-economic conditions. Since ophthalmologic involvement is frequent, an eye examination may be helpful in making a diagnosis. Prevention is essential

A population-based study on the causes of mild and severe mental retardation.

The causes of mental retardation (MR) were studied as part of a multidisciplinary epidemiological case-control study in 151 mentally retarded patients identified by screening four age cohorts (12,882 children) at 8-9 years of age in the province of Kuopio, Finland. The causes of MR in 77 severely retarded (SD < or = -3 SD) and 74 mildly retarded (-2 > SD > -3) children were divided into pre-, peri-, postnatal and unknown groups according to the probable time of onset. The causes were pre-, peri-, postnatal and unknown in 60%, 9%, 8% and 23%, and 22%, 1%, 3% and 74%, in the two populations, res

Ventricular mitochondrial gene expression during development and following embryonic ethanol exposure.

The effects of chronic embryonic ethanol exposure were evaluated in chick ventricular muscle. Ethanol treatments were administered on embryonic days 11, 13, 15, and 17 and chicks were sacrificed at various time points following treatments. Fluctuations in embryonic blood ethanol levels were examined following treatments. Developmental increases in the activities of mitochondrial enzymes, cytochrome oxidase (CO) and citrate synthase (CS), were observed. Ethanol exposure resulted in a depression in CO activity, but not CS activity. Since, a maximal depression in CO activity was seen with ethanol

Maternal ethanol consumption reduces Se antioxidant function in placenta and liver of embryos and breastfeeding pups.

AIM: The fetal alcohol exposition during pregnancy leads to different disorders in offspring, related to the oxidative stress generated by alcohol. It is well-documented that there is an impairment of the antioxidant selenoprotein Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in ethanol offspring during the embryo period, although no-one has described Selenium (Se) status. The aim is to analyze for the first time Se deposits in vivo and Se's biological implication in embryos and placenta after alcohol exposure and in offspring whose mothers continued to drink ethanol during lactation.
