Intraabdominal bands of the vitelline vessels and vitelline duct are discovered as a congenital disturbance any time in life. In more than 75% they cause an acute abdominal disease. In this paper we discuss the cause and the clinical picture in 19 children seen in our department together with 83 cases from the literature. In 70% of the cases we find remnants of the right and left vitelline artery, in a third remnants of the vitelline vein and vitelline duct. The characteristic course is the acute strangulation of the intestine with gangrene of the bowel and endotoxine shock. The best treatment

Volvulus of the jejunum and ileum in three horses was associated with intestinal strangulation in a mesenteric rent. The rent was in the jejunal mesentery at its point of attachment with an anomaly that was classified as a mesodiverticular band. PURPOSE: Idiopathic intussusception is one of the most common causes of small bowel obstruction in children. To decrease subsequent recurrence and to detect a lead point, an early laparoscopy was performed for children with multiple recurrent ileocolic intussusception.

Adult intussusception occurs infrequently and differs from childhood intussusception in its presentation, aetiology, and treatment. Diagnosis can be delayed because of its longstanding, intermittent, and non-specific symptoms and most cases are diagnosed at emergency laparotomy. A 76-year-old woman presented after 1 day of melena and anemia. A Meckel's scan revealed an upper mid abdominal focus of activity that paralleled stomach activity. Later, the surgeon removed the corresponding lesion in the mid ilium. Pathology confirmed that the lesion was a carcinoid tumor, not ectopic gastric mucosa. The false-positive Meckel's scan had revealed the true source of gastrointestinal bleeding and an unsuspected solitary carcinoid tumor. This is the third published case of a carcinoid tumor discovered by a false-positive Meckel's scan.

Intussusception in the adult is an uncommon condition usually with a chronic history but it may occasionally present as an acute process. The clinical picture is most often that of a large or a small bowel obstruction. When the intussusception begins in the small bowel, a benign causative factor is found most frequently, whereas intussusception of the colon is most often secondary to a malignant lesion. Idiopathic causes occur rarely as compared to the pediatric age group. The treatment of adult intussusception is surgical.

Between 1947 and 1964, 32 infants in the first two weeks of life were seen at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, with radiological evidence of free air in the peritoneal cavity.
