Reversible inhibition of medial septum interneurons abolishes initial acquisition of new place-reward associations and reveals a progressive reduction in dependence on medial septal function.

Hippocampal place cells encode spatial information within a theta-organized temporal framework paced by the medial septum (MS). Lesions or inactivation of the MS impair spatial learning and disrupt hippocampal theta rhythmicity, long-term potentiation, and plasticity-related gene expression, while often sparing spatially selective firing of CA1 neurons (but not CA3 neurons). Although many rodent studies argue against classical systems consolidation by showing persistent hippocampal dependence of spatial memories, other work has suggested that training structure, spaced vs. massed trials, can i

Memory impairment in Parkinson's disease: The retrieval versus associative deficit hypothesis revisited and reconciled.

OBJECTIVE: Our study explored the retrieval deficit and the associative deficit hypotheses of memory impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD). The former supports a memory deficit mediated by attention/executive dysfunctions, whereas the latter hypothesizes a hippocampal memory impairment in PD. METHOD: We studied 31 controls and 34 PD patients classified as PD with normal cognition (PD-NC; n = 18) and PD with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI; n= 16). To test the retrieval deficit hypothesis, we measured the performance in encoding, retention, and recognition in verbal and visual domains; to

Aberrant high-beta band functional connectivity during reward processing in melancholic major depressive disorder: An MEG study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the spatial-temporal pattern variation of whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) during reward processing in melancholic major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, and to determine the clinical correlates of connectomic differences. METHODS: 61 MDD patients and 32 healthy controls were enrolled into the study. During magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning, all participants completed the facial emotion recognition task. The MDD patients were further divided into two groups: melancholic (n = 31) and non-melancholic (n = 30), based on the Mini International Neuropsychiatri

Intelligent Visual Prioritization for Retinal Prostheses via Context-Aware Object Ranking and Depth-Aware Phosphene Generation.

Images from high-resolution cameras are mapped onto a sparse pattern of low spatial resolution and intensity in the retina, which limits visual perception in retinal prosthetic vision. When the entire scene is converted into phosphenes, it may allow unnecessary background information to be retained and may cause visual clutter, which may make it hard for prosthetic vision users to interpret the scene. In order to tackle this issue, this paper presents a context-, depth-, and user-preference-aware method for selecting the objects of interest in the generation of phosphene images. The proposed m

[Associative visual agnosia. The less visible consequences of a cerebral infarction].

After a cerebral infarction, some patients acutely demonstrate contralateral hemiplegia, or aphasia. Those are the obvious symptoms of a cerebral infarction. However, less visible but burdensome consequences may go unnoticed without closer investigation. The importance of a thorough clinical examination is exemplified by a single case study of a 72-year-old, right-handed male. Two years before he had suffered from an ischemic stroke in the territory of the left posterior cerebral artery, with right homonymous hemianopia and global alexia (i.e., impairment in letter recognition and profound imp

Early visual processing deficits in dysbindin-associated schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Variation at the dysbindin gene (DTNBP1) has been associated with increased risk for schizophrenia in numerous independent samples and recently with deficits in general and domain-specific cognitive processing. The relationship between dysbindin risk variants and sensory-level deficits in schizophrenia remains to be explored. We investigated P1 performance, a component of early visual processing on which both patients and their relatives show deficits, in carriers and noncarriers of a known dysbindin risk haplotype. METHODS: Event-related potential responses to simple visual isola

Special AAO Report: Recommendations on Screening for Hydroxychloroquine Retinopathy (2025 Revision).

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommendations on screening for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy are now a decade old. This revision provides an update based on current knowledge. Major points and changes are as follows. NATURE OF TOXICITY: The retina typically remains clinically normal for many years on HCQ, but there is an unpredictable point at which signs of toxicity may develop. PATTERN OF TOXICITY: Most eyes of patients of European heritage have a parafoveal pattern of toxicity, whereas eyes of East Asian patients tend to present with pericentral toxicity, but th

The Vowelization Effect in Arabic Reading: A Systematic Review and the Conditional Facilitation Account.

The results of studies on Arabic vowelization have been mixed: some have shown that diacritical marks facilitate reading, while others document processing costs. These discrepancies suggest that vowelization effects are not uniform but conditional on multiple interacting factors. The present systematic review synthesizes empirical studies published between 2000 and 2025 to identify the conditions under which vowelization facilitates or constrains reading. Following PRISMA guidelines, 26 studies examining native Arabic readers across different developmental stages, reader profiles, and task par

Artificial Intelligence for Diagnosis of Esophageal Manometry: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: High-resolution manometry (HRM), the gold standard for diagnosing esophageal motility disorders, remains constrained by inter-rater variability, limited access to expert esophagologists, and inadequate training infrastructure. Many gastroenterology fellowship programs provide insufficient motility training, and dedicated expert centers remain geographically concentrated. Emerging Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have the potential to automate diagnosis, and augment clinician interpretive capacity and democratizing expert-level motility assessment. RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-

Unrecognized sciatic lipomatosis of the nerve diagnosed by telehealth: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Lipomatosis of the nerve (LN) is a rare congenital hamartoma in which abundant fibroadipose tissue is found within the epineurium of peripheral nerves. It is frequently associated with nerve territory overgrowth affecting bones or soft tissues. The clinicoradiological features are well known and pathognomonic. OBSERVATIONS: A 38-year-old female was evaluated via telehealth for worsened sciatica after the resection of a sciatic notch lipoma, after having been evaluated over a decade for symptoms. Virtual physical examination revealed previously unrecognized subtle limb discrepancy

The spectrum of giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica: revisiting the concept of the disease.

GCA and PMR are conditions of older persons that frequently overlap. The traditional concept of GCA has focused on cranial symptoms such as headache and visual disturbance, but extra-cranial manifestations such as constitutional symptoms, polymyalgia and limb claudication have also long been recognized. These symptoms may coincide with cranial GCA, occur as an independent clinical subset [large-vessel (LV) GCA] or overlap with PMR. Imaging studies have demonstrated that up to one-third of patients with PMR have subclinical LV inflammation at disease outset. The implication of this finding for

Hierarchical categorization learning is associated with representational changes in the dorsal striatum and posterior frontal and parietal cortex.

Learning and recognition can be improved by sorting novel items into categories and subcategories. Such hierarchical categorization is easy when it can be performed according to learned rules (e.g., "if car, then automatic or stick shift" or "if boat, then motor or sail"). Here, we present results showing that human participants acquire categorization rules for new visual hierarchies rapidly, and that, as they do, corresponding hierarchical representations of the categorized stimuli emerge in patterns of neural activation in the dorsal striatum and in posterior frontal and parietal cortex. Oxytocin selectively enhances the recognition of infant sadness in postpartum depression.

BackgroundLittle is known about the role of oxytocin in the processing of positive emotional infant cues in mothers with PPD.ObjectivesWe therefore examined whether intranasal oxytocin influences postpartum mothers' processing of positive infant emotional cues, both visual (facial expressions) and auditory (laughter), and intended caregiving responses.DesignThis double-blind randomized controlled crossover study included 45 mothers, with 3- to 9-month-old infants, who exhibited clinically relevant scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, with 35 mothers fulfilling the criteria of a

AAC-TTA: Anti-adversarial consistency with test-time adaptation for imbalanced histopathology classification under scanner-induced domain shift.

The performance of medical image classification models can degrade at deployment because of two common real-world challenges: domain shift and class imbalance. Domain shift causes whole-slide images acquired on different scanners to exhibit substantial visual variation, while class imbalance under-represents clinically important high-grade patterns. The effect of class imbalance is not limited to training data: it can re-emerge during unsupervised test-time adaptation, further suppressing rare but diagnostically important classes even as overall performance improves. To address these coupled d

Event-related brain potential markers of visual and auditory perception: A useful tool for brain computer interface systems.

OBJECTIVE: A majority of BCI systems, enabling communication with patients with locked-in syndrome, are based on electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency analysis (e.g., linked to motor imagery) or P300 detection. Only recently, the use of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) has received much attention, especially for face or music recognition, but neuro-engineering research into this new approach has not been carried out yet. The aim of this study was to provide a variety of reliable ERP markers of visual and auditory perception for the development of new and more complex mind-reading systems f

The contribution of discrete-trial naming and visual recognition to rapid automatized naming deficits of dyslexic children with and without a history of language delay.

Children with Developmental Dyslexia (DD) are impaired in Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) tasks, where subjects are asked to name arrays of high frequency items as quickly as possible. However the reasons why RAN speed discriminates DD from typical readers are not yet fully understood. Our study was aimed to identify some of the cognitive mechanisms underlying RAN-reading relationship by comparing one group of 32 children with DD with an age-matched control group of typical readers on a naming and a visual recognition task both using a discrete-trial methodology, in addition to a serial RAN tas

[Virtual histopathology of the pancreas: 3D insights using synchrotron-based imaging].

BACKGROUND: Conventional histopathology faces methodological limitations when assessing complex three-dimensional tissue architectures. In particular, for heterogeneous tissues such as the pancreas or in complex tissue pathologies, restriction to two-dimensional sections hampers comprehensive recognition of morphological features. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to demonstrate the potential of synchrotron-based phase-contrast imaging (SRµCT) as a tool for high-resolution visualization of pancreatic tissue. Three representative case examples were analyzed to capture morphological parameters volumet

Dorsally exophytic brain stem ganglioglioma extending to the foramen of Luschka: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas are rare tumors primarily arising from the central nervous system, mostly in the temporal lobes, with brain stem involvement being particularly infrequent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported instance of a brainstem ganglioglioma exhibiting an extension to foramen of Luschka. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of ganglioglioma of the brainstem. 23-year-old Turkish patient presented with flashing lights in the peripheral visual fields. Imaging studies revealed a distinct mass lesion adjacent to the brainstem, demonstrating an unusual exo
