Behavioral effects of long-term antimuscarinic use in patients with spinal dysraphism: a case control study.

PURPOSE: We explored possible associations between long-term antimuscarinic use and behavioral problems in children with spinal dysraphism and neurogenic bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children with open and closed spinal dysraphism were recruited from 2 pediatric hospitals, 1 in Amsterdam and 1 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. At the Amsterdam facility antimuscarinics were prescribed in selected patients with detrusor overactivity. At the Utrecht facility antimuscarinics were prescribed from birth onward in patients with spinal dysraphism beginning in the early 1990s. Parents of study participa

Neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter correlates in children with antisocial behavior.

When antisocial behavior becomes a persistent pattern that affects diverse domains of children's functioning, psychiatrists refer to oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD). The term disruptive behavior disorder (DBD) covers both ODD and CD. Research shows that in the absence of effective interventions, the prognosis for DBD children is relatively unfavorable: their disorder can extend into adolescence, manifest itself in delinquency, and convert into other psychiatric symptoms, such as addiction or personality disorders. Although environmental factors have traditionally a

Neurocognitive findings in Prader-Willi syndrome and early-onset morbid obesity.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether early-onset morbid obesity is associated with cognitive impairment, neuropathologic changes, and behavioral problems. STUDY DESIGN: This case-control study compared head MRI scans and cognitive, achievement, and behavioral evaluations of subjects with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), early-onset morbid obesity (EMO), and normal-weight sibling control subjects from both groups. Head MRI was done on 17 PWS, 18 EMO, and 21 siblings, and cognitive, achievement, and behavioral evaluations were done on 19 PWS, 17 EMO, and 24 siblings. RESULTS: The mean General Intellectu

The impact of lay health advisors on cardiovascular health promotion: using a community-based participatory approach.

Overweight and obesity, lack of exercise, and exposure to tobacco smoke are clearly identified behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular disease. These problems disproportionately affect some communities. To address these problems within one community of underserved Latinos, participatory research methods were used to design an outreach program through a collaborative partnership between UCLA School of Nursing, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and members of the target community. Latina lay health advisors (LHAs) (n = 12) from the community were recruited and trained to teach

Behavioral aspects of pediatric epilepsy syndromes.

Apart from control of the seizures, two of the most important factors in determining how well a child with epilepsy progresses toward independence are cognition and behavior. The diagnosis of the correct epilepsy syndrome often provides information with regard to probability of good seizure control and intellectual outcome. However, relatively little has been published on the behavioral aspects of the various epilepsy syndromes. In West syndrome there is emerging evidence that early effective treatment might improve outcome in terms of both cognition and behavior. The work on this syndrome in

Behavioral Parent Training for Families With Young Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children Followed in Hearing Health Care.

PURPOSE: It is well established that individuals with a communication disability, including being deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), experience inequities in health services and outcomes. These inequities extend to DHH children's access to psychosocial evidence-based interventions (EBIs). Behavioral parent training is an EBI that can be used to improve caregiver and child outcomes. Despite being supported by decades of effectiveness research, this EBI is rarely accessed by, or studied with, caregivers of DHH children. The purpose of this article is to describe a program of stakeholder-engaged rese

Clarifying the role of Cortico-Cortical and Amygdalo-Cortical brain dysconnectivity associated with Conduct Problems.

A recent meta-analysis of resting-state functional connectivity studies revealed that individuals exhibiting antisocial behaviors or conduct problems may show disrupted brain connectivity in networks underpinning socio-affective and attentional processes. However, studies included in the meta-analysis generally rely on small sample sizes and substantially differ in terms of psychometric scales and neuroimaging methodologies. Therefore, we aimed to identify reliable functional brain connectivity alterations associated with severity of conduct problems using a large sample of adolescents and two

Preventing enduring behavioural problems in young children through early psychological intervention (Healthy Start, Happy Start): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural problems are common in early childhood, and can result in enduring costs to the individual and society, including an increased risk of mental and physical illness, criminality, educational failure and drug and alcohol misuse. Most previous research has examined the impact of interventions targeting older children when difficulties are more established and harder to change, and have rarely included fathers. We are conducting a trial of a psychological intervention delivered to families with very young children, engaging both parents where possible. METHODS: This study i

Help-seeking behavior and its determinants among gender-based violence survivor women in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence is a pervasive public health and human rights problem that disproportionately affects women in Africa, resulting in profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Despite these impacts, many survivors do not seek formal help due to stigma, fear, and limited access to resources. This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of help-seeking behavior and identify its determinants among gender-based violence survivor women in Africa. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following standard methodological guidelines, using s

Transdiagnostic or Disorder Specific? Indicators of Substance and Behavioral Addictions Nominated by People with Lived Experience.

Using a transdiagnostic perspective, the present research examined the prominent indicators of substance (alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, tobacco) and behavioral (gambling, video games, sex, shopping, work, eating) addictions nominated by people with lived experiences. Specifically, we aimed to explore whether the perceived most important indicators nominated were consistent across the 10 addictions or differed based on the specific addiction. Additionally, we explored gender differences in the perceived most important indicators across addictive behaviors. A large online sample of adults recruit

Fathers' postnatal distress, parenting self-efficacy, later parenting behavior, and children's emotional-behavioral functioning: A longitudinal study.

Fathers' postnatal distress has been associated with subsequent emotional and behavioral problems for children; however, the mechanisms by which this occurs have received less attention. One potential pathway could be via the negative effects that father mental health problems and parenting self-efficacy (PSE) in the postnatal period have on later parenting behaviors. Using a nationally representative cohort of Australian father-child dyads (N = 3,741), the long-term relationships between fathers' psychological distress and PSE in the postnatal period, parenting behavior when children were age

Validation of a one item screen for problem gambling.

A valid 1 item screen ("In the past 12 months, have you ever had an issue with your gambling?") is potentially important in both a primary care setting and in research applications where an extended screen is not practical or affordable. Prior research by Thomas et al. (A one item screening tool for problem gambling for use in primary care settings, Unpublished Manuscript, Monash University, 2010) and Thomas et al. (MJA 189(3):135-136, 2008) found that the 1 item screen provided acceptable performance when compared to the 9-item Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI, Ferris and Wynne in The Ca
