In the past 10 years, the RSCICDV has had a unique opportunity to serve and expand the bounds of knowledge regarding this most devastating injury. The RSCICDV has collaborated with other model SCI systems in research regarding the incidence of respiratory complications, the value of removing bullet fragments lodged within the spinal canal, the survival/cause of death following spinal cord injury, the cost of spinal cord injury care, and the recovery of motor strength after quadriplegia. Key on-site research efforts have focused on preventing deep vein thrombosis and in documenting the course o

National estimates of the numbers and expenditures associated with hospitalization due to injury among children (aged 0 to 14) were derived using data from the 1984, 1985, and 1986 National Hospital Discharge Surveys (NHDS) and the 1980 National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditures Study (NMCUES). In this report, age- and sex-specific estimates of the numbers of hospital admissions and expenditures are reported for subgroup of patients defined by external cause of the injury and by nature and severity of the injury. In 1985, over 266,000 children sustained a traumatic injury resulting in

BACKGROUND: Individuals with stroke or spinal cord injury (SCI) often have poor balance control, leading to falls and activity limitations. One intervention that targets balance control-functional electrical stimulation with visual feedback balance training (FES+VFBT)-may improve balance control but needs modifications for clinical use.
OBJECTIVE: To use a participatory design approach to identify potential challenges and solutions for the clinical implementation of FES+VFBT as a balance intervention.
DESIGN/METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study involving four semi-structured focus group

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major contributor to emergency department (ED) visits worldwide, with older adults being particularly susceptible due to fall-related injuries. The widespread use of anticoagulants, including direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), raises concerns about the risk of delayed intracranial haemorrhage (dICH), even in cases where the initial head computed tomography (CT) scan shows no abnormalities. The optimal strategies for managing and monitoring these patients remain a subject of ongoing debate.

PURPOSE: Rib fractures in the elderly can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Management is generally conservative due to the perceived risks related to frailty and co-morbidities. The primary aim of this exploratory study was to describe the demographics and outcomes of traumatic rib fractures in older Australians admitted to major trauma centres. The secondary aim was to describe the management strategies employed, the involvement of specialist pain services, involvement of geriatric services, availability of surgical options and evaluate any variability in management at participati

BACKGROUND: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults in the United States. Current fall prevention interventions rely on provider referral or enrollment during inpatient admissions and require engagement and independence of the patient. Community emergency medical services (CEMS) are a unique opportunity to rapidly identify older adults at risk for falls and provide proactive fall prevention interventions in the home. We describe the demographics and treatment characteristics of the older adult population most likely to benefit from these interventions.

Reconstruction of the upper gastrointestinal tract presents a surgical challenge after esophagogastrectomy, especially when it includes hypopharyngolaryngectomy. Reconstruction is generally undertaken with interposed colon as a substitute conduit, but it carries several risks. Alternative reconstruction of the foregut with pedicled retrosternal jejunum anastomosed at the level of the base of the tongue is described.

OBJECTIVE: Falls from standing are common, particularly amongst the aging population, due to declining mobility, proprioception and vision. They are often complicated by fragility fractures, including vertebral fractures, that are associated with significant morbidity and may represent a pre-terminal condition with high one-year mortality rates.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the Trauma Audit and Research Network database for a major trauma centre was conducted for all patients admitted between January 2011 and December 2016. Patients with a spinal fracture and a confirmed fa

UNLABELLED: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is one of the most common diseases in the elderly male population. The urinary tract symptoms may increase the risk of falls and fractures. The results indicated that patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia could increase the risk of vertebral compression fractures in both the thoracic and lumbar spine and also hip fractures, but did not increase the risk of wrist fracture.
INTRODUCTION: The relationship between benign prostatic hyperplasia and the development of fall-related fractures, especially vertebral compression fractures, has been seldom men

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a commonly used surgery for unstable hangman's fractures. This study investigated the rate of residual deformity after ACDF for these fractures and the effect of residual deformity on clinical and radiologic outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 28 patients with unstable hangman's fractures treated with ACDF was undertaken. The angulation and anterior translation between C2-C3 were measured on lateral radiographs at the time of admission, after skull traction, in the initial postoperative period, and at final follow-up. BACKGROUND: Falls are common in the older UK population and associated costs to the NHS are high. Systematic reviews suggest that home exercise and group-based exercise interventions, which focus on progressively challenging balance and increasing strength, can reduce up to 42% of falls in those with a history of falls. The evidence is less clear for those older adults who are currently at low risk of falls.
AIM: ProAct65+, a large, cluster-randomised, controlled trial, investigated the effectiveness of a home exercise programme (Otago Exercise Programme (OEP)) and a group-based exercise prog

Frailty is a major health burden in an aging society. It constitutes a clinical state of reduced physiological reserves that is associated with a diminished ability to withstand internal and external stressors. Frail patients have an increased risk for adverse clinical outcomes, such as mortality, readmission to hospital, institutionalization and falls. Of further clinical interest, frailty might be at least in part reversible in some patients and subject to preventive strategies. In daily clinical practice older patients with a complex health status, who are mostly frail or at least at risk o

BACKGROUND: As the population ages, mortality from falls will soon exceed that from all other forms of injury. Tremendous resources are focused on this problem, but how these patients die is unclear. To fill this gap, we tested the hypothesis that falls among the elderly are related to patient, rather than to injury factors when compared with falls among younger adults.
METHODS: From January 2002 to December 2012, 7,293 fall admissions were reviewed. Data are reported as mean ± SD if normally distributed or median (interquartile range) if not.
RESULTS: In 2002 to 2007, 25% of all falls were
