Potent inhibition of MMP-9 by a novel sustained-release platform attenuates left ventricular remodeling following myocardial infarction.

Sustained drug-release systems prolong the retention of therapeutic drugs within target tissues to alleviate the need for repeated drug administration. Two major caveats of the current systems are that the release rate and the timing cannot be predicted or fine-tuned because they rely on uncontrolled environmental conditions and that the system must be redesigned for each drug and treatment regime because the drug is bound via interactions that are specific to its structure and composition. We present a controlled and universal sustained drug-release system, which comprises minute spherical pa

Microencapsulate Probiotics (MP) Promote Growth Performance and Inhibit Inflammatory Response in Broilers Challenged with Salmonella typhimurium.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are prevalent in husbandry around the world due to the abuse of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs); therefore, it is necessary to find alternatives to AGPs in animal feed. Among all the candidates, probiotics are promising alternatives to AGPs against Salmonella infection. The anti-Salmonella effects of three probiotic strains, namely, Lactobacillus crispatus 7-4, Lactobacillus johnsonii 3-1, and Pediococcus acidilactici 20-1, have been demonstrated in our previous study. In this study, we further obtained the alginate beads containing compound probiotics, namely,

Oral phages prophylaxis against mixed Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium infections in weaned piglets.

Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium are the main pathogens of diarrhea in weaned piglets. The prevention of bacterial diarrhea in weaned piglets by phage is rarely reported. We conducted this study to evaluate the preventive effect of phages on mixed Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium infections in weaned piglets. A novel phage named NJ12 was isolated by using Salmonella Typhimurium SM022 as host bacteria and characterized by electron microscopy, genomic analysis and in vitro bacteriostatic activity. Phage NJ12 and a previously reported phage EP01 were microencapsulated with s

Clinical Update Findings about pH-Impedance Monitoring Features in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Patients.

Purpose: The diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is commonly based on non-specific symptoms and findings and a positive response to an empirical therapeutic trial. The therapeutic response is, however, unpredictable, and many patients need pH-impedance monitoring to confirm the diagnosis. Methods: A review of the recent literature was conducted in PubMED, Scopus, and Embase about the pH-study features of LPR patients. A summary of last evidence was proposed. Results: The awareness of otolaryngologists about indications and interpretation of pH-impedance monitoring is low. The hypophary

Palliative management of a recurrent destructive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp with brain exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most prevalent malignant skin carcinoma. Bone infiltration is uncommon, and invasion of the dura mater and brain parenchyma is rare and possible only in the advanced stages of the disease. Treatment of advanced SCC is challenging and often requires the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team to provide local and systemic treatment. Management of advanced SCC of the scalp involving bones and meninges with brain exposure was described herein. CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old male presented with advanced SCC of the scalp. A vegetative and in

Treatment of diabetic mice by microfluidic system-assisted transplantation of stem cells-derived insulin-producing cells transduced with miRNA.

AIMS: Cell-based therapy is a promising approach for the treatment of type-1 diabetes mellitus. Identifying stem cells with differentiation potential to Insulin-producing cells (IPCs) and their application is an emerging issue. Different strategies have been used to support cell survival and their specific functions to control hyperglycemia conditions. Novel technologies using appropriate materials/fibers can improve cell transplantation. MAIN METHODS: In the present study, IPCs were differentiated from adipose-derived stem cells transduced with miR-375 and anti-miR-7. The cells' survival rat

A novel 3D culture model recapitulates primary FL B-cell features and promotes their survival.

Non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphomas (B-NHL) mainly develop within lymph nodes as aggregates of tumor cells densely packed with their surrounding microenvironment, creating a tumor niche specific to each lymphoma subtypes. In vitro preclinical models mimicking biomechanical forces, cellular microenvironment, and 3D organization of B-cell lymphomas remain scarce, while all these parameters are key determinants of lymphomagenesis and drug resistance. Using a microfluidic method based on cell encapsulation inside permeable, elastic, and hollow alginate microspheres, we developed a new tunable 3D model in

Nebulization of a polyelectrolyte-drug system for systemic hypertension treatment.

Hypertension is a chronic pathology where blood pressure levels are continuously high, causing cardiac, renal, cerebral, and vascular damage leading to early morbi-mortality. This illness is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and the main cause of atrial fibrillation. Atenolol (AT) is a β-1 blocker drug useful for antihypertension and antiarrhythmic treatments. However, this drug possesses low oral bioavailability associated to its low permeability and extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. To solve the conventional AT-administration problems, oral controlled-release and transd

Click chemistry-based biopolymeric hydrogels for regenerative medicine.

Click chemistry is not a single specific reaction, but describes ways of generating products which emulate examples in nature. Click reactions occur in one pot, are not disturbed by water, generate minimal and inoffensive byproducts, and are characterized by a high thermodynamic driving force, driving the reaction quickly and irreversibly towards a high yield of a single reaction product. As a result, over the past 15 years it has become a very useful bio-orthogonal method for the preparation of chemical cross-linked biopolymer-based hydrogel, in the presence of e.g. growth factors and live ce

Drought-tolerant Pseudomonas sp. showed differential expression of stress-responsive genes and induced drought tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The growth and persistence of rhizobacteria in soils are highly impacted by moisture stress. In this study, we report the first transcript analysis of four Pseudomonas strains (PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4) isolated from the root-soil interface of rice and maize associated with different moisture levels during water deprivation. Filtered Pseudomonas sp. cells incubated at low (RH10%) and high (RH85%) relative humidity showed decreased survival of all Pseudomonas sp. at RH10% when compared with RH85%. RT-PCR showed differential expression of treS (trehalose synthase), rpoS (sigma factor), mucA (algin

Injectable hydrogel for co-delivery of 5-azacytidine in zein protein nanoparticles with stem cells for cardiac function restoration.

Heart failure is major cause of mortality associated with mostly Myocardial infarction (MI). Transplanting mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have exhibited potential role in myocardial regeneration. Secretion of immune-modulatory cytokines and various growth factors after transplantation plays significant role in remodelling process of MI region. However, low retention, higher shear stress during administration and rejection at host infarct environment hinders therapeutic efficacy. Myocardial regeneration demands for accurate spatio-temporal delivery of MSCs with supportive vascular network that le
