[Radiation therapy for Morbus Ledderhose -- indication and clinical results].

BACKGROUND: Morbus Ledderhose (ML) is a rare hyperproliferative disorder of the plantar aponeurosis which is similar in its clinical course to Morbus Dupuytren (MD). We examined whether radiotherapy (RT) can effect symptoms and prevent disease progression. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From June 1996 to December 2001, 25 patients (12 female/13 male) aged 9-76 (median: 56) years had radiotherapy (RT) for symptomatic ML. Follow-up (FU) was at least 1 year. 36 feet (16 right/20 left) were treated, as eleven patients had bilateral disease. Twelve (48%) patients had MD. There were 63 nodules (with 0,5-6,5

Evaluation of pectoralis major muscle in patients with posterior breast tumors on breast MR images: early experience.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ability to use breast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to assess disease extent in patients with posterior breast masses who are suspected to have tumor invasion into underlying muscle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with posterior breast masses underwent three-dimensional, gradient-echo, 1.5-T MR imaging before and after the administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Thirteen had deep palpable masses that were clinically determined to be fixed to the underlying chest wall. Twelve had mammographic findings that caused muscle involvement to be suspected, and

Heterogeneity in gingival fibromatosis.

A review of cases indicated that gingival fibromatosis occurs in a variety of genetic entities. High risk for epilepsy and oligophrenia is associated if hypertrichosis is present. Other entities are symmetrical gingival fibromatosis; Zimmermann-Laband syndrome with bone, ear, nose and nail defects and hepatosplenomegaly; Murray syndrome with multiple hyaline dermal tumors; Rutherfurd syndrome with corneal dystrophy; Cowden syndrome with hypertrichosis, oligophrenia and giant fibroadenomatosis of breasts and Cross syndrome of hypopigmentation, oligophrenia and athetosis.

Knee bone tumors: findings on conventional radiology.

The knee is a common site for bone tumors, whether clinically painful or not. Conventional radiology has been established as the first line of investigation in patients with knee pain and can reveal lesions that often generate questions not only for the generalist physician but also for the radiologist or general orthopedist. History, image examination, and histopathological analysis compose the essential tripod of the diagnosis of bone tumors, and conventional radiology is an essential diagnostic tool in patients with knee pain. This pictorial essay proposes to depict the main conventional ra

Tumor Formation of Adult Stem Cell Transplants in Rodent Arthritic Joints.

PURPOSE: While imaging matrix-associated stem cell transplants aimed for cartilage repair in a rodent arthritis model, we noticed that some transplants formed locally destructive tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine the cause for this tumor formation in order to avoid this complication for future transplants. PROCEDURES: Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) isolated from subcutaneous adipose tissue were implanted into 24 osteochondral defects of the distal femur in ten athymic rats and two immunocompetent control rats. All transplants underwent serial magnetic resonance imaging (MR

Clinical evaluation and management of benign soft tissue tumors of the extremities.

Benign lesions comprise a majority of soft tissue tumors. It has been estimated that their incidence outnumbers that of malignant tumors by a factor of at least 100 [1]. While history and physical examination can start the diagnostic process, imaging including the use of magnetic resonance imaging can be more helpful. Biopsy of these tumors is sometimes necessary and can be performed in a number of ways, often in conjunction with definitive treatment. Specific diagnostic and treatment strategies for a number of the more commonly encountered benign soft tissue tumors including lipomas, pigmente

Arthropathy, osteolysis, keloids, relapsing conjunctival pannus and gingival overgrowth: a variant of polyfibromatosis?

Polyfibromatosis is a rare fibrosing condition characterized by fibromatosis in different body areas and by keloid formation, and which can be associated with arthropathy and osteolysis. Familial occurrence has been described, but the cause remains unknown. Here, we describe a patient with characteristics of polyfibromatosis with arthropathy who had in addition severe conjunctival fibrosis, distinctive face, gingival overgrowth, and pigmented keloids. We discuss the resemblances and differences with polyfibromatosis and descriptions of other, similar patients. We conclude that at present it re…

Localized (solitary) fibrous tumors of the pleura: an analysis of 15 patients.

BACKGROUND: Localized fibrous tumors of the pleura (LFTPs) are rare neoplasms, which are considered to originate from submesothelial connective tissue. The aim of this article is to present 15 new cases because of their different clinical behaviors and to discuss the treatment of choice of such neoplasms. METHODS: The records of 15 consecutive patients with LFTP operated at our Institution between 1995 and 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnostic procedures, clinical courses, and outcomes of these patients were studied. Total excision through a thoracotomy was performed in all patients.

Neurosensory changes after liquid nitrogen cryotherapy.

PURPOSE: The study goal was to evaluate neurosensory changes after liquid nitrogen cryotherapy in the management of mandibular lesions in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The design of the study was a retrospective review. Sixteen patients with posterior mandibular lesions (15 odontogenic keratocysts and 1 fibromyxoma) in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve were treated with a standardized enucleation and cryotherapy technique. Postoperative evaluation included patients report of symptoms and formal neurosensory testing. RESULTS: All patients h

The desmoid syndrome. New aspects in the cause, pathogenesis and treatment of the desmoid tumor.

Based on a detailed clinical and laboratory investigation of 89 patients with histologically verified desmoid tumor and the pertinent medical literature, we have reviewed the etiologic factors, clinical characteristics, and results of treatment of this rare disorder. The incidence of the tumor in the Finnish population is low, 2.4 to 4.3 new cases per 10(6) inhabitants per year. The age distribution profile demonstrated four distinct peak periods: the juvenile period, the fertile period, the middle-age period and the old-age period. The juvenile desmoid tumor is an extraabdominal tumor found i

While the other patient required an open biopsy to establish the nature of underlying pathology, as the pre-op histological evaluation revealed equivocal nature of bone lesion. Genetic testing for hereditary kidney cancer revealed a 5'UTR deletion in the TSC1 gene, leading to a diagnosis of TSC.
