We describe here an unusual case of volar dislocation of the radiocarpal joint due to a complete tear of the dorsal radiocarpal ligament. Plain radiographs taken at initial presentation did not reveal any obvious abnormality. There was no associated bony lesion or intrinsic wrist ligament injury. Radiocarpal dislocations should be considered in the diagnosis of high-energy wrist injuries, even when initial radiographs look normal. The importance of a high index of suspicion in high velocity wrist injuries and need for further evaluation and imaging is highlighted.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate that magnetic resonance (MR) imaging allows evaluation of injuries of the pectoralis major muscle.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen men underwent MR imaging after injury of the pectoralis major muscle. Most of the patients (nine of 15) were injured while lifting weights, notably bench-pressing. The injuries were evaluated for abnormal morphology and signal intensity, specifically the site of injury, degree of tearing, and amount of tendon retraction.
RESULTS: Six injuries occurred at the musculotendinous junction, and five were treated conservatively; eight of the nine

OBJECTIVES: Rugby is a high contact sport that can lead to head contact events, especially in forward players, triggering inflammatory processes. Mitochondrial DNA, released during injury, may act as a proinflammatory signal. This study aimed to assess levels of three mitochondrial DNA forms-mitochondrial (Fraction 1), protein bound (Fraction 2), and naked (Fraction 3) - across a rugby season and correlate them with neuroinflammatory markers, blood parameters, and head impact exposure.
DESIGN: Observational, longitudinal.
METHODS: Thirteen male professional rugby players were monitored acros

Sports-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains significantly underdiagnosed, with up to 50% of mild TBI cases in sport going undetected. While finite element (FE) simulations can predict brain deformation from head impacts, their computational cost limits clinical applicability for on-field assessments. This study shows a proof-of-principle in using a personalised machine learning framework capable of rapidly predicting regional brain strain simulations over time from wearable sensor kinematics, requiring as few as 150 head acceleration events (HAE) per athlete for training. The health and well-being of retired rugby union and league players, particularly regarding the long-term effects of concussions, are of major concern. Concussion has been identified as a major risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), in athletes engaged in contact sports. This study aimed to assess differences in specific biomarkers between UK-based retired rugby players with a history of concussion and a non-contact sports group, focusing on biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's, ALS, and CTE. We randomly selected a sample of m

Deltoid paralysis after axillary nerve injury results in limitations in shoulder function and stability. In the setting of an isolated axillary nerve injury with no clinical or electromyographic evidence of recovery that is within 6 to 9 months postinjury, the authors' preferred technique to reinnervate the deltoid is to reconstruct the axillary nerve with sural nerve grafting. Intraoperative neuromuscular electrophysiology is critical to determine the continuity of the axillary nerve before proceeding with reconstruction. The majority of the time, both an anterior and posterior incision and d

BACKGROUND: Rugby is a collision sport with a high risk of shoulder injury. Although traumatic anterior shoulder instability is common, the long-term effects of rugby and joint instability on the shoulder have not been described; thus, this study assessed the effects of rugby itself, and joint instability, on the glenoid cavity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both sides of the shoulders from 25 rugby players and 17 control patients with unilateral shoulder instability were prospectively evaluated by means of computed tomography osteoabsorptiometry, which represents the distribution of mineralization

BACKGROUND: Sports sponsorship is a significant marketing tool. As such, it can promote products that pose risks to health (eg, high fat and high sugar foods) or it can promote health-supporting products (eg, sporting equipment and services). However, there is a lack of data on the proportion of sponsorship associated with "Требует внимания" and "Работает" products and no methodology for systematically assessing it. This research aimed to explore this proportion with an Internet survey of sports sponsorship in the New Zealand setting.
METHODS: A search methodology was developed to identify Internet-b

A 30-year-old black man presented sudden-onset paraplegia during a foot-ball match, after a movement of hyperextension of the trunk. Moreover, the patient exhibited an hypoesthesia below the T11 level, with sphincter disturbances. The MRI and the CT-scan showed a stenosis of the spinal canal related to an ossification of hypertrophied ligamenta flava from T10 to T12. Intramedullary abnormal signals on MRI images were compatible with a spinal cord hemorrhage. A laminectomy with removal of abnormal ligamenta flava was carried out, and their endochondral ossification was confirmed by pathological

OBJECTIVE: Blood flow restriction (BFR) is a method used to affix a pneumatic cuff to the uppermost part of a leg. Blood flow restriction is often combined with low load-blood flow restriction training (LL-BFRt) to enhance strength and promote muscle hypertrophy. Therefore, this research aimed to examine the effect of LL-BFRt, sham LL-BFRt, and high load-resistance training (HL-Rt) on quadriceps strength (QS), dynamic stability, and functional performance.
DESIGN: Single-blinded randomized trial method.
SETTING: A private physical therapy clinic in Bali, Indonesia.
PARTICIPANTS: Data were c

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cold-water immersion (CWI) between consecutive bouts of simulated rugby seven's matches on performance, physiology and perception. Using a randomised crossover counterbalanced design, 10 male recreational team-sport athletes completed two trials involving two 14 min simulated self-paced intermittent-sprint protocol (ISP) bouts with a 45 min recovery between each bout including a 15 min recovery intervention. Participants completed resting measures, 15 m sprints and vertical jumps (VJ) followed by the first ISP (ISP1) in a hot environment.

The value of echocardiography in the screening of athletes in addition to the electrocardiogram is debated and still unclear. 336 rugby players in French professional divisions (Top 14, Pro D2) were prospectively assessed with electrocardiogram and echocardiography. 75% were Caucasian, 16.4% Pacific Islanders, and 8.6% Afro-Caribbean. Six (1.8%) players had electrocardiogram abnormalities, exclusively negative T waves. Twenty-one (6.25%) of them had abnormal echocardiography findings: one possible early hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, one anomalous origin of coronary artery, two left ventricular
