Double, double toil and trouble: a case of combined esophageal and gastrointestinal duplication cysts in infancy and a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastrointestinal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies, usually solitary and most often involving the ileum and esophagus. Multiple non-contiguous duplications are exceptionally uncommon and may mimic more frequent neonatal thoracic or abdominal conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a term female neonate with a prenatal suspicion of congenital pulmonary airway malformation. Postnatally, she developed respiratory distress due to a large thoracic cyst, which was resected thoracoscopically and confirmed to be an esophageal duplication cyst. Weeks later,

The omphalomesenteric duct fibrous band as a rare cause of bowel obstruction: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) is an embryonic structure that normally undergoes obliteration during embryonic development, typically not persisting after birth. Failure of complete or partial obliteration can result in a type of malformation known as OMD remnant. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 24-year-old male patient diagnosed with bowel obstruction. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed the presence of an adhesion band. During surgery, a fibrous band connecting from the umbilicus to the mesentery of terminal ileum was found and resected.

Endoscopic Capsule Retention: Frequency, Causes and Risk Factors Analysis in 244 Consecutive Procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic capsule is central to the study of the small bowel. Retention is its main complication. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the frequency and risk factors associated with capsule retention. METHODS: 244 consecutive examinations were analyzed. The event was defined as "definitive retention" if the capsule remained in the small bowel for 3 weeks after the procedure, and as "temporary retention" if the capsule remained in the small bowel at the end of the procedure but was eliminated spontaneously in the following days. Risk factors associated with retention were inflammatory small b

Melena as an unusual presentation of gastrointestinal stromal tumour, a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs) are a rare slow growing malignancy, accounting for less than 1% of all gastrointestinal (GI) tract tumors. These tumors are usually discovered incidentally by endoscopy, surgery or radiology. However on occasions they may present with significant symptoms including GI blood loss. This case report discusses an atypical presentation of a GIST in a 57-year-old female. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman presented to the emergency department following one episode of melena. This occurred on a background of two previous presentations with me

Widespread extrahepatic expression of acute-phase proteins in healthy chicken (Gallus gallus) tissues.

Acute phase proteins (APP) are plasma proteins that can modify their expression in response to inflammation caused by tissue injury, infections, immunological disorders or stress. Although APP are produced mainly in liver, extrahepatic production has also been described. As a prerequisite to get insight the expression of APP in chicken during diseases, this study investigated the presence of five APP, including alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), Serum Amyloid A (SAA), PIT54, C-Reactive protein (CRP) and Ovotransferrin (OVT) in twenty tissues collected from healthy chicken (Gallus gallus) by quant

Pediatric gastrointestinal nuclear medicine.

General localization of gastrointestinal bleeding through the use of labeled red blood cells may be performed in children, or (99m)Tc-pertechnetate may be used if a Meckel's diverticulum is suspected. As in adults, cholecystitis and biliary leak may be assessed in children via (99m)Tc-IDA derivatives. Gastroesophageal reflux can be evaluated by oral consumption of the child's usual diet labeled with (99m)Tc sulfur colloid. For the scintigraphic determination of pulmonary aspiration, a relatively high concentration of tracer within a drop of liquid is placed beneath the child's tongue followed

Intussusception in infants and children: risk factors leading to surgical reduction.

Intussusception is commonly the etiology of intestinal obstruction in infants and children. To investigate demographic data, clinicopathologic features and therapeutic prognosis of patients with intussusception, we reviewed 361 intussusceptions in 333 patients over an 11-year period. Most patients were below two years of age and there was a male preponderance of 1.6:1. There was no seasonal difference between the number of cases. The clinical triad of vomiting, abdominal colicky pain and bloody stools was manifested in only one-third of our patients. Secondary intussusception contributed to 6.

[Current diagnostic-therapeutic trends in treatment of pediatric appendicitis].

Acute appendicitis is the first cause of emergency surgery in children. Actually, emergency abdominal sonography has evolved in differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis in children to differentiate it from other causes of acute abdomen as mesenteric lymphoadenitis, acute right pyelonephritis, acute diverticulitis in Meckel's diverticulum, intestinal intussusception, regional enterits, primary peritonitis, anaphylactoid purpura of Henoch-Schonlein. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the usefulness of abdominal sonography in diagnosing acute appendicitis in our current series of pedi

Jejunal diverticulosis.

Jejunal diverticulosis is considered to be a generally asymptomatic condition in which the diverticula are pulsion mucosal herniations with walls lacking a muscle layer. These opinions in particular are examined in this review of 20 cases of jejunal diverticulosis treated during an 8 year period. The predominant complication in each case was inflammation or perforation (nine), diarrhoea or malabsorption (five), haemorrhage (three), chronic abdominal pain (two) and pseudo-obstruction (one). At least 10 patients had more than one complication, although this was often unrecognized. Ten patients c

Pathological findings in dicephalus dipus dibrachius: implications for mechanisms in two pairs of lateral conjoined twins.

The anatomical and pathological features of two pairs of dicephalic conjoined twins (case 1 and 2) are described. Both twins showed duplicitas lateralis representing diprosopus dipus dibrachius. There were two complete heads on two necks, one thorax, one abdomen and externally normal two arms and two legs. Case 1 showed dicephalus with anencephaly, two vertebral columns and two spinal cords, which converged from the thoracic region distally. The esophagus, stomachs and partial small intestines were duplicated, which fused at yolk sac (with Meckel's diverticulum). The heart was incompletely fus
