ABO blood groups and salivary gland tumors (Alabama, United States).

Studies of associations between various diseases and the ABO blood groups have shown elevated relative risks for some categories of disease. A strong association between salivary gland tumors and blood group A has been reported, but studies are few and have yielded contradictory results. To investigate this association, we conducted an epidemiologic study of salivary gland tumors diagnosed in Jefferson Country, Alabama (United States), 1968-89. All tumors were histologically confirmed. Blood group information was obtained for 200 individuals with salivary gland tumors, and the distribution of

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck: Incidence and survival trends based on 1973-2007 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck (ACCHN) is a rare tumor of minor salivary, parotid, and submandibular glands. The biologic behavior of the disease is poorly understood, and nonsurgical treatment strategies have yet to be standardized. The long-term prognosis continues to be guarded, with an estimated 10-year survival of <60%. Population-based studies examining ACC are scarce. The authors aimed to analyze incidence rates and survival outcomes for patients diagnosed with ACCHN using national population-based data. METHODS: Data were obtained from the US National

Metastasis of amelanotic melanoma of unknown origin in the parotid gland.

We report a rare case of metastasis of an amelanotic melanoma of the parotid gland. To our knowledge this is the first report of a metastasis of an amelanotic melanoma in a parotid lymph node. Superficial parotidectomy with no other complementary treatment controlled the tumour. Progress has been excellent and the patient was well at six years' follow-up.

A comprehensive analysis of parotid and salivary gland cancer: worse outcomes for male gender.

BACKGROUND: To determine the effects of patient demographics, socioeconomic status (SES) and clinical variables on outcomes for patients with salivary and parotid gland tumors. METHODS: Florida cancer registry and inpatient hospital data were queried for cancer of the salivary glands diagnosed between 1998-2002. RESULTS: A total of 1573 patients were identified. Women were diagnosed at a younger age (median age (years): women 60.8 versus men 64.3, P=0.003). Men were more often diagnosed with high grade tumors (65.1% versus 41.9% for women, P<0.001) and advanced disease stage (>stage III: 60.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the major salivary glands: clinical and histopathologic analysis of 234 cases with evaluation of grading criteria.

BACKGROUND: The authors had previously conducted an investigation of minor salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma, in which they demonstrated that certain clinical and histopathologic features were useful in predicting biologic outcome. The current study investigated the usefulness of these features in determining the prognoses of patients with mucoepidermoid carcinomas of the major salivary glands. METHODS: Clinical data and 15 histopathologic features were compared in 4 patient groups based on outcome after initial treatment. The outcome groups were 1) survival without disease, 2) survival

Expression rate of LAT1 in high-grade parotid gland carcinoma and potential of BNCT as a treatment option for recurrent parotid gland carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) perform as a treatment option for locally advanced or recurrent unresectable head and neck cancers since June 2020 in Japan. The effect of BNCT on parotid carcinoma, which presents a variety of histologic types, remains unclear. The object of this study was to investigate the antitumor efficacy of BNCT against parotid gland carcinoma by focusing on LAT1, which is involved in the uptake of L-BPA, the boron compound used in BNCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 42 high-grade parotid gland carcinoma cases. We immunostain

Bone marrow metastases in salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and extremely aggressive salivary gland cancer. An 81-year-old woman with SDC underwent a total parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice and a neck dissection. Following surgery, she was diagnosed with disseminated bone marrow metastases. She underwent chemotherapy and trastuzumab for palliation. We present a case of SDC of the parotid which was diagnosed with disseminated bone marrow metastasis following surgery for the primary. This case also highlights the importance of having a high index of suspicion while evaluating highly aggressive tumours like

Probabilistic Multiple-Bias Modeling Applied to the Canadian Data From the Interphone Study of Mobile Phone Use and Risk of Glioma, Meningioma, Acoustic Neuroma, and Parotid Gland Tumors.

We undertook a re-analysis of the Canadian data from the 13-country case-control Interphone Study (2001-2004), in which researchers evaluated the associations of mobile phone use with the risks of brain, acoustic neuroma, and parotid gland tumors. In the main publication of the multinational Interphone Study, investigators concluded that biases and errors prevented a causal interpretation. We applied a probabilistic multiple-bias model to address possible biases simultaneously, using validation data from billing records and nonparticipant questionnaires as information on recall error and selec

Survey of opinions on the management of pleomorphic adenoma among United Kingdom oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to highlight the current points of view regarding the management of pleomorphic adenomas among oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United Kingdom. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was drafted and sent to all the consultant members of the British Society of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (n=263). The survey evaluated the surgical experience of the surgeon, the preferred surgical treatment of a newly diagnosed 3 cm diameter pleomorphic adenoma in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland in an adult and a child, and the treatment options of pleomorphic salivary a

MR imaging and CT of extrahepatic cavernous hemangiomas.

Ten extrahepatic cavernous hemangiomas in seven patients were evaluated by MR and CT. MR was done with a 1.0-T superconducting magnet and spin-echo imaging. The lesions occurred in the musculoskeletal system, parotid gland, and spleen. MR and CT features of hemangiomas were compared, and MR findings in hemangiomas were also compared with those in eight musculoskeletal tumors of nonvascular origin. MR detected 10 hemangiomas, while nine were shown by CT. Also, MR was more accurate than CT in three patients in determining the true extent of hemangiomas. At a pulse-repetition interval of 2000 mse

Eleven Years of Parotid Gland Surgery in a Plastic and Reconstructive Department.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors are an uncommon entity, comprising 3% to 6% of all head and neck tumors. Approximately 75% to 80% occur in the parotid gland, and 80% are benign. It is difficult to establish epidemiologic characteristics of parotid gland tumors due to their low incidence. We performed a retrospective study to analyze clinical diagnostic and therapeutic features of patients submitted to parotid gland surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed, regarding all the patients (n = 96) submitted to surgery for treatment of parotid gland disease in the Department of Plasti

Parotid gland metastasis of a breast cancer.

UNLABELLED: Environmental monitoring plays a critical role in creating and maintaining a comfortable, productive, and healthy environment. Built upon the advancements of robotics and data processing, mobile sensing demonstrates its potential to address problems regarding cost, deployment, and resolution that stationary monitoring encounters, which therefore has attracted increasing research attentions recently. To facilitate mobile sensing, two key algorithms are needed: the field reconstruction algorithm and the route planning algorithm. The field reconstruction algorithm is to reconstruct th

Living with the Elekta Compact: Limitations and ways around them.

Elekta AB, Sweden has recently propagated the Elekta Compact--a low-cost, small-footprint, single energy (6MV), linear accelerator, in India. The absence of electron beams and the inability to seamlessly deliver inverse planned intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) segments, mean that some out-of-the-box thinking is mandatory for the full range of required treatments in different clinical settings, but is ultimately very rewarding. Our department started off in July 2011, with the Elekta Compact, equipped with MLCi2 and a camera-based electron portal imaging device. For head-neck cancers, we
