Medication pain management in the elderly: unique and underutilized analgesic treatment options.

BACKGROUND: By 2030, the US population of adults aged ≥65 years will increase by >80%, and these adults will account for nearly 20% of the US population. In this population, the decline of multiple physiologic processes and diseases collectively influence treatment options. Physiologic changes, drug-drug interactions resulting from polypharmacy, and drug-disease interactions combine to make elderly patients more sensitive to the adverse events (AEs) associated with medications, all of which must be considered in drug selection. OBJECTIVE: This article focuses on select underutilized medicatio

Effects of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor administration on neutrophil phenotype and functions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) is currently used for treatment of various types of neutropenia, treatment of aplastic anemia, mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells. However, rhG-CSF is not only a growth factor for the myeloid lineage, but it also acts as a modulator of neutrophil behavior. The aim of the present review article is to examine the following aspects of rhG-CSF therapy: 1) does rhG-CSF influence neutrophil functions, and in particular their microbicidal properties? 2) does rhG-CSF modify neutrophil phenotype?

Implementation of a complex intervention for hip fracture care: a protocol for an embedded mixed-methods process evaluation of a multicentre cluster randomised trial in India, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: The HIPCARE Study is a cluster randomised trial to determine whether the introduction of a multidisciplinary model of hip fracture care in five low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia can improve quality of life and reduce healthcare costs for older people undergoing surgery. An embedded process evaluation will provide detailed information on the contextual factors influencing the implementation of HIPCARE to explain what works, for whom and why. This paper describes the protocol for the HIPCARE process evaluation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A mixed-methods process evaluatio

Bridging the Divide in India's Tobacco Epidemic: A Review of the Effectiveness of Four Core Policy Interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco is one of the major risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Indian population. The decreasing trend of tobacco use reflects significant progress in tobacco control, which can be attributed to key policies like price rise, smoke-free areas, ban on advertising and promotion and pictorial warnings on tobacco products. This narrative review was undertaken to assess effectiveness of these four policies in reducing tobacco burden in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles were obtained by searching through all major databases. Peer-reviewed articles published i

Exploring the role of modifiable sex/gender-specific risk and protective factors for anxiety among young people in high income countries: a systematic narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is the most common mental health problem in young people and sex/gender differences have been consistently reported, with girls and young women experiencing twice the chance of anxiety compared to boys and young men. There is a limited understanding, however, of the underlying causes of these differences. This systematic review aims to synthesise research identifying modifiable sex/gender-specific risk and protective factors for anxiety among young people aged 16–24 in high income countries. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on 29th February 2024 and upd

Smoking determinants and exhaled CO as an indicator of smoking intensity among Indonesian students: evidence from a school-based prevention program.

BACKGROUND: Smoking among Indonesian youth remains a major public health concern. While behavioral predictors of smoking are well documented, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of biomarkers, such as exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO) levels in predicting smoking intensity is limited. This study examined factors correlated with smoking behavior and investigated the relationship between eCO levels, smoking intensity, and quit intentions. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s School-Based Smoking Prevention Program, involving 9,856 students aged 8–21 ye
