Implications of asymmetric neural activity patterns in the basal ganglia outflow in the integrative neural network model for cervical dystonia.

Cervical dystonia (CD) is characterized by abnormal twisting and turning of the head with associated head oscillations. It is the most commo … ollis) or roll plane (laterocollis). The hypothesis also specifies that feedback to hNI-cerebellum, proprioception, and basal ganglia outflow (pallidus) are connected in a network; thus asymmetry is distributed through the feedback network. In 15 CD patients undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery, with their informed consent, we used the opportunity to …

Postural analysis in a pediatric cohort of patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a rare disorder affecting the connective tissue. EDS patients may suffer of proprioception and balance impairment but all the studies dealing with such symptoms have been addressed to adult subjects. The Study of such impairment in younger patients may lead to a better awareness of own motor abilities and to a focused rehabilitative intervention. Therefore, our work aims to assess the occurrence of these alterations in a pediatric cohort of EDS patients. METHODS: The Research was designed as a cross-sectional study with a matching control group …

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Hypermobility Type: Impact of Somatosensory Orthoses on Postural Control (A Pilot Study).

Elhers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is the clinical manifestation of connective tissue disorders, and comprises several clinical forms with no specific symptoms and selective medical examinations which result in a delay in diagnosis of about 10 years. The EDS hypermobility type (hEDS) is characterized by generalized joint hypermobility, variable skin hyperextensibility and impaired proprioception. Since somatosensory processing and multisensory integration are crucial for both perception and action, we put forth the hypothesis that somatosensory deficits in hEDS patients may lead, among other clinica…

Traumatic spinal cord injuries at a tertiary care rehabilitation institute in Pakistan.

UNLABELLED: The widespread adoption of head-mounted display (HMD) virtual reality (VR) systems has emerged in various fields, including spatial learning research. This study investigated the effects of VR modality level of immersion, locomotion interface, and proprioception on spatial learning and physiological measures using eye-tracking (ET) in VR. We translated the classic T-maze task from Barnes et al. (Can J Psychol 34:29-39, 1980. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0081022) to humans for the first time, comparing three VR modalities: 3D HMD VR with physical walking, 3D HMD VR with controller-based…

Neurological complications of acquired cobalamin deficiency: clinical aspects.

Neuropsychiatric syndromes occur in about 40% of Cbl-deficient patients and are characterized by progressive and variable damage to the spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebrum. The first abnormality is usually sensory impairment, most often presenting as distal and symmetrical paraesthesiae of the lower limbs and frequently associated with ataxia. Almost all patients demonstrate loss of vibratory sensation, often in association with diminished proprioception and cutaneous sensation and a Romberg sign. Corticospinal tract involvement is common in more advanced cases, with abnormal reflexes,…

Tactile acuity and active joint repositioning sense in individuals with and without chronic low back pain: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sensorimotor dysfunction, as measured by tactile acuity and active joint repositioning, has been identified as a contributing factor of chronic low back pain (CLBP). Existing research suggests that further research is necessary to improve the characterization of sensorimotor perception in patients with CLBP. OBJECTIVES: The main aim is to investigate whether tactile acuity and repositioning errors differ between individuals with CLBP and controls without CLBP. A secondary aim was to investigate the association between age, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity, and tactile a

Patterns of cortical activation following motor tasks and psychological-inducing movie cues in heroin users: an fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Drug abuse and addiction are worldwide health problems. However, few studies have used fMRI to investigate the effect of chronic heroin use on brain activation. This is a study along this line. METHOD: fMRI positive sites in the brain were recorded during different motor and sensory activities. RESULTS: Following motor activities, heroin users had more sites globally activated in the brain than in normal volunteers, with ex-heroin users being least reactive. Conversely, a "heroin puffing" movie produced more activation in ongoing-heroin and ex-heroin users than in the normal indiv

Mechanosensitivity of the median nerve in patients with chronic carpal tunnel syndrome.

The aim was to investigate the relationship between the effects of median nerve strain during the elbow extension component of the upper limb neurodynamic test 1 (ULNT1) and the evoked musculoskeletal changes. 11 patients with chronic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and 11 matched asymptomatic controls participated in the study. In all subjects, elbow extension was carried out in both ULNT1 and neutral positions of the shoulder and arm. From these two starting positions a KIN-COM(®) dynamometer carried out passive elbow extension while EMG activity of 10 arm and shoulder muscles, elbow-flexor res

The influences of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control.

The aim of this study was to check the combined and/or dissociated influences of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control. Twenty subjects participated in test sessions which took place at 6:00 am, 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm either after a normal night's sleep or after a night of total sleep deprivation. Postural control was evaluated by COP surface area, LFS ratio and Romberg's index. The results showed that postural control fluctuates diurnally according to three different periods, pronounced by sleep deprivation: (1) at 6:00 am, there was no modification by sleep deprivation

Brain cooling-stimulated angiogenesis and neurogenesis attenuated traumatic brain injury in rats.

BACKGROUND: Although brain cooling has been reported to be effective in improving the outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats, the mechanisms of brain cooling-induced neuroprotective actions remain unclear. This study was to test whether angiogenesis and neurogenesis attenuating TBI could be brain cooling stimulated. METHODS: Anesthetized rats, immediately after the onset of TBI, were divided into two groups and given the brain cooling (infusing 5 mL of 4°C saline via the external jugular vein) or no brain cooling (infusing 5 mL of 37°C saline via the external jugular vein). Position sensitivity of feline paraspinal muscle spindles to vertebral movement in the lumbar spine.

Muscle spindles contribute to sensorimotor control by supplying feedback regarding muscle length and consequently information about joint position. While substantial study has been devoted to determining the position sensitivity of spindles in limb muscles, there appears to be no data on their sensitivity in the low back. We determined the relationship between lumbar paraspinal muscle spindle discharge and paraspinal muscle lengthening estimated from controlled cranialward movement of the L(6) vertebra in anesthetized cats. Ramp (0.4 mm/s) and hold displacements (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.2 mm
