Frontal cortical activity during dominant and non-dominant handwriting in healthy adults: an fNIRS study.

Handwriting integrates linguistic and motor processes and is a complex neuropsychological function. We investigated whether frontal cortical activity during written object naming differs between dominant- and non-dominant-hand writing. Sixteen healthy right-handed adults performed written-naming and circle-drawing motor-control tasks with the dominant right and non-dominant left hands while measuring bilateral frontal cortical hemodynamic responses using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Writing-related activity was defined as the difference in oxygenated hemoglobin responses between writ

Unraveling Interband Hot-Electron Transfer in Hydrogenated Au@Cu2O/TiO2 Heterostructure Nanocrystals for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution.

We report the design and fabrication of a novel hydrogenated photoactive composite, H:(Au@Cu2O/TiO2). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed a well-defined core-shell architecture with a p-n heterojunction configuration. Optical and electronic band structures were systematically investigated. The localized surface plasmon resonance LSPR-induced inter-band electron transfer process from Au to Cu2O shell was elucidated from the transient absorption spectra (TAS) and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). A comprehensive charge-transfer mechanism was pr

Emotional interference and right prefrontal hemodynamic responses in adult cannabis users: a pilot fNIRS study.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use has been linked to alterations in cognitive control and emotional processing, although findings vary according to use pattern and abstinence status. This pilot study examined whether emotional interference is especially sensitive to short-term abstinence-related differences across cannabis-use profiles and whether such differences are accompanied by distinct prefrontal hemodynamic responses. METHODS: Non-users, occasional cannabis users, and chronic cannabis users completed a pre-post cognitive battery including an Emotional Stroop task. In the cannabis-use groups,

Multiscale neural signatures of long-lag repetition learning: a simultaneous fNIRS-EEG study.

SIGNIFICANCE: Repetition-based learning supports word recognition and reading fluency, yet its neural mechanisms remain poorly understood, particularly where deficits in consolidating repeated linguistic input may underlie reading and language difficulties. Establishing reliable neural markers of repetition-based learning is a critical first step toward characterizing the phenotypes of these difficulties in children. AIM: We developed a whole-brain simultaneous functional near-infrared spectroscopy-electroencephalography (fNIRS-EEG) approach to capture fast temporal electrophysiological and s

Effects of real-time visual feedback (D-WALL) on neuromuscular control in healthy adults: an fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular control is essential for maintaining posture and performing motor tasks. Real-time visual feedback provides sensory information that may influence central neural processing and lower-limb muscle coordination during balance tasks. This study investigated the effects of visual feedback on neuromuscular control in healthy adults. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults aged 18-40 years completed four randomized balance conditions with or without real-time visual feedback. Physical activity and sports participation were assessed using the Tegner Activity Scale. Static and dynamic

Spinal Cord Ischemia After Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair: Pathophysiology, Detection, and Management.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) is a complex vascular disorder involving both thoracic and abdominal segments of the aorta and remains associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. One of the most serious complications after thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair is spinal cord ischemia (SCI), which may progress to spinal cord infarction and result in irreversible neurologic deficits including paraplegia, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, and bowel dysfunction. The incidence of SCI after TAAA repair varies with the extent of aneurysmal involvement, operative duration, and

A molecular engineered NIR-II fluorescence agent with enhanced radiative and non-radiative decay for precision prostate cancer bone metastasis theranostics.

The rational design of organic phototheranostic agents that combine diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities for cancer treatment remains challenging due to the inherent competition between radiative and non-radiative energy dissipation pathways. Herein, a novel molecule, TQP-TTPA, is strategically designed by incorporating a bulky electron donor and extended π-bridge, resulting in red-shifted absorption and emission in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II), along with prominent NIR-IIa emission (1300-1500 nm), a high NIR-II extinction coefficient, and enhanced NIR-IIa fluorescence brightnes

Infrared Spectra of UFn (n = 1-4) in Solid Ne and Ar Matrices: Symmetry-Breaking D2d Structure of UF4.

This study addresses two persistent challenges in uranium fluoride chemistry: resolving decades-long spectral assignment conflicts across UF2, UF3, and UF4 species, and conclusively settling the symmetry controversy of UF4. By the cryogenic matrix isolation IR spectroscopy technique in combination with relativistic quantum chemical calculations, we experimentally tracked the stepwise formation of UF to UF6 in neon and argon matrices. Theoretical validation has led to a reassignment of the infrared absorption bands for UF2, UF3, and UF4, defining their molecular geometries. While UF2 exhibits a

Perioperative Cerebral Protection and Monitoring of Acute Stanford Type A Aortic Dissection: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Optimal cerebral protection strategies for acute Stanford type A aortic dissection (aTAAD) surgery remain controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the role of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-guided monitoring and its association with clinical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 619 patients undergoing aTAAD surgery (Hemi-Arch, Total-Arch, or Arch-Stent procedures). Intraoperative cerebral oxygenation was monitored using NIRS, with the magnitude of desaturation quantified as ΔNIRS. We assessed correlations between ΔNIRS and nasopharyngeal temperature, employed gener

Brain activity in response to food images in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are caused and exacerbated by consumption of fatty foods. However, no study has evaluated brain activity in response to food images in patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). This study aimed to compare food preference and brain activity when viewing food images between patients with DGBI and healthy controls. METHODS: FD and IBS were diagnosed using the ROME IV criteria. Food preference was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). Brain activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in response to food imag

Distinct Situational Cue Processing in Individuals with Kleptomania: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorder has been suggested to meet the criteria of addiction and is often considered a behavioral addiction; however, few studies have examined whether the disorder involves altered responses to situational cues that are associated with symptoms. In this study, we examined behavioral and neural responses to situational cues among individuals with an impulse control disorder: kleptomania. METHODS: Healthy adults and kleptomania patients whose symptoms were characterized by repetitive, uncontrolled shoplifting of sales goods in stores were recruited. Images with and

Friend or foe: classifying collaborative interactions using fNIRS.

To succeed, effective teams depend on both cooperative and competitive interactions between individual teammates. Depending on the context, cooperation and competition can amplify or neutralize a team's problem solving ability. Therefore, to assess successful collaborative problem solving, it is first crucial to distinguish competitive from cooperative interactions. We investigate the feasibility of using lightweight brain sensors to distinguish cooperative from competitive interactions in pairs of participants (N=84) playing a decision-making game involving uncertain outcomes. We measured bra

Microvascular and oxidative stress responses to acute high-altitude exposure in prematurely born adults.

Premature birth is associated with endothelial and mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic oxidative stress, which might impair the physiological responses to acute altitude exposure. We assessed peripheral and oxidative stress responses to acute high-altitude exposure in preterm adults compared to term born controls. Post-occlusive skeletal muscle microvascular reactivity and oxidative capacity from the muscle oxygen consumption recovery rate constant (k) were determined by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in the vastus lateralis of seventeen preterm and seventeen term born adults.
