Seroprevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis, human T-lymphotropic virus, and Chagas disease in the Peruvian Amazon: a cross-sectional study.

Strongyloides stercoralis infections, human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) infections, and Chagas diseases occur throughout many regions of Central and South America, including Peru. This study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of S. stercoralis, HTLV, and Chagas disease in Iquitos (Peruvian Amazon) and the associated epidemiological conditions for S. stercoralis seroprevalence in Iquitos. A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 1 to June 15, 2020, to assess the seroprevalence of S. stercoralis [lysate antigen ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay)], HTLV (recombinan

Comparison of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification and Real-Time PCR Assays for Detection of Strongyloides Larvae in Different Specimen Matrices.

Strongyloides stercoralis can cause disease that ranges from asymptomatic chronic infection to fatal hyperinfection. Diagnosis from stool can be challenging because the most sensitive conventional tests require live larvae to be effective and there can be low larval output in chronic infection. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) have been developed to complement existing diagnostic methods. We compared a recently developed loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay with a real-time PCR that has previously been validated with larval microscopy. The limits of detection-quantified u

Status and Risk Factors of Strongyloides stercoralis Infection in Rural Communities of Xayaburi Province, Lao PDR.

The present study was performed to reveal the current status and risk factors of Strongyloides stercoralis infections in the villages of Kenethao district, Xayaburi Province, Lao PDR. Fecal specimens were collected and examined for S. stercoralis using Koga-agar plate culture technique. Among 516 individuals, the prevalence of S. stercoralis and hookworm infection was 44.2% and 17.1%, respectively. Co-infection was detected in 13.2% of the cases. The prevalence did not significantly differ between males and females (P=0.193). However, the prevalence of S. stercoralis infection increased signif

Community-based cross-sectional study of carcinogenic human liver fluke in elderly from Surin province, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini infection is a serious public-health problem in Southeast Asia. It is associated with a number of hepatobiliary diseases and the evidence strongly indicates that liver fluke infection is the etiology of cholangiocarcinoma. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine Opisthorchis viverrini infection in elderly people in Surin province, Northeastern Thailand. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 333 elderly in 17 districts of Surin province, during one year period from January to December 2011. O. viverrini infection was determi

Infectivity of Strongyloides venezuelensis is influenced by variations in temperature and time of culture.

The present research investigated the influence of temperature and time of larvae culture on the infectivity of Strongyloides venezuelensis. Mice were infected s.c. with 1500 larvae of S. venezuelensis maintained at 28 °C for three days of culture (dc), 28 °C for seven dc or 18 °C for seven dc. On days 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 post-infection the animals were sacrificed and cell numbers in the blood, peritoneal cavity fluid (PCF), broncoalveolar fluid (BALF), cytokines, immunoglobulins, number of parasites and eggs/g of feces were quantified. Results demonstrated an increase in eosinophils and mon

Occurrence of Strongyloides stercoralis in Yunnan Province, China, and comparison of diagnostic methods.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a neglected soil-transmitted helminth species, and there is a lack of parasitologic and epidemiologic data pertaining to this parasite in China and elsewhere. We studied the local occurrence of S. stercoralis in a village in Yunnan province, China, and comparatively assessed the performance of different diagnostic methods. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Multiple stool samples from a random population sample were subjected to the Kato-Katz method, an ether-concentration technique, the Koga agar plate method, and the Baermann technique. Among 180 partic

Distribution of human Oesophagostomum bifurcum, hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis infections in northern Ghana.

A cross-sectional study was carried out in 216 randomly selected, representative rural villages in the northeastern part of Ghana from March 1995 to May 1998. Inhabitants of randomly selected households, stratified by age and gender, were included. The geographical position of villages was recorded with a global positioning system (GPS). The prevalence of Oesophagostomum, hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis infections in a study population of 20250 people was determined by microscopic examination of larvae in stool cultures. The overall prevalence was 10.2, 50.6 and 11.6% for the three nema

Detection of opportunistic and non-opportunistic intestinal parasites and liver flukes in HIV-positive and HIV-negative subjects.

We assessed the frequency and distribution of infection with opportunistic and non-opportunistic intestinal parasites and the liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, in HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative subjects. Age- and sex-matched HIV-seropositive (n = 78) and HIV-seronegative patients (n = 78) from two hospitals in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand, participated in this study from November 1998 to August 2000. These subjects were divided according to the presence of diarrhea and CD4 counts. A single stool sample was obtained and analyzed by using specific techniques. Opisthorchis viverrini, wa

Strongyloides stercoralis: protective immunity to third-stage larvae inBALB/cByJ mice.

A murine model system was developed to study the induction and mechanism of protective immunity to L3 of Strongyloides stercoralis. L3 were implanted in BALB/cByJ mice in diffusion chambers constructed with 0.1- or 2.0-microns-pore-size membranes. Parasites survived equally well regardless or membrane type for 7 days, after which larval survival decreased in diffusion chambers constructed with 2.0-microns-pore-size membranes, which allowed host cells to enter. Survival of S. stercoralis L3 in diffusion chambers implanted in mice was assayed after immunization with live, heat-killed, and homoge

Polyparasitism on the Kenya coast. 1. Prevalence, and association between parasitic infections.

A partially-stratified sample survey of people living in the catchment area of Kilifi General Hospital, Coast Province, Kenya, identified 19 species of parasites in blood and intestines. Age-prevalence curves of the common infections were of two distinct types, possibly reflecting the host's ability to mount a partially effective immune response. Although statistically-significant associations between pairs of infections were clearly demonstrable, these were almost wholly explained by environmental heterogeneity and epidemiological coincidence. There was no evidence of positive or negative inf

Seroepidemiology of Strongyloides infection in the Southeast Asian refugee population in Canada.

As part of a screening and treatment program for intestinal parasite infections offered to newly arrived Southeast Asian refugees in Canada between July 1982 and February 1983, a total of 232 sera were tested for Strongyloides infection using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (immunoglobulin G). These results were compared with coprologic results and eosinophil counts. The seroprevalence was 76.6% (131 of 171) among Kampucheans, 55.6% (15 of 27) among Laotians, and 11.8% (4 of 34) among Vietnamese. A statistically significant relation (p less than 0.001) was found between Strongyloides sero

Ivermectin Treatment and Sanitation Effectively Reduce Strongyloides stercoralis Infection Risk in Rural Communities in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is the only soil-transmitted helminth with the ability to replicate within its host, leading to long-lasting and potentially fatal infections. It is ubiquitous and its worldwide prevalence has recently been estimated to be at least half that of hookworm. Information on the epidemiology of S. stercoralis remains scarce and modalities for its large-scale control are yet to be determined. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A community-based two-year cohort study was conducted among the general population in a rural province in North Cambodia. At each survey, pa
