Correlations between photon absorption properties and failure load of the distal radius in vitro.

The bone mineral content (BMC) and cross-sectional properties of cadaveric radii were assessed by single photon absorptiometry (SPA). A new multiple-angle scanning technique was used in conjunction with SPA to measure the area and moments of inertia of the radial cross section in intact forearms. The radii of the same forearms were then broken in a failure test to simulate a fall on the outstretched arm. Colles' fracture was produced in 16 of 18 radii tested. The BMC divided by the bone width, which is called bone mineral density (BMD) in clinical applications, did not correlate with the load

Bone mineral density and fracture in postmenopausal women.

This retrospective study examined bone mineral density (BMD) for discrimination of female patients with fractures. Bone densitometry was done in 146 patients over the age of 50 years at radius, lumbar spine, and proximal femur sites using single and dual photon absorptiometry. The patients were divided into three groups: (A) no osteoporotic fractures (n = 92); (B) mild spine fractures with greater than 15% compression (n = 38); and (C) hip fractures (n = 16). Groups B and C did not differ significantly from each other in BMD, but these groups differed significantly from group A for spine and f

Bone mineral content in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism: a comparison of conservative management with surgical treatment.

The management of patients with asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism remains controversial. This study examined the extent to which the presence of prospect of bone disease should influence treatment. Bone mineral content (BMC) of the distal forearm was measured by single photon absorptiometry in 67 patients with mild hyperparathyroidism. Twenty-six patients treated surgically and 17 managed conservatively were reviewed regularly for up to 4 years. Eighty per cent of patients had a baseline fat-corrected BMC within the local reference interval for age and sex, but about 75 per cent of values fell

Oral radiographs in the detection of early signs of osteoporosis.

A study was conducted to determine whether radiographic changes could be detected in the mandible of patients with mild-to-moderate postmenopausal osteoporosis and whether these changes could be used as a diagnostic tool to differentiate normal from osteoporotic patients. Subjects were classified as either osteoporotic (21) or normal (14) on the basis of bone density measurements of the lumbar spine and femoral neck, as determined by dual-photon absorptiometry. Mandibular bone density measurements were made on panoramic and periapical radiographs and expressed in terms of millimeters of alumin

Bone mineral content of British and rural Gambian women aged 18-80+ years.

The bone mineral content (BMC) of the mid-shaft radius was measured in 446 rural Gambian and 349 British women aged 18-80+ years using single-photon absorptiometry. The two groups of women differed substantially in habitual calcium intake, calcium requirements for reproduction, physical activity and incidence of minimal-trauma fractures. The relationships of BMC with bone width (BW) and with body weight and height were explored using stepwise multiple regression analysis. The pattern of BMC with age was similar in The Gambia and Britain; BMC increased slightly to a peak at the end of the fourt

Bone mineral content of the lumbar spine and lower extremities years after spinal cord lesion.

Bone mineral content (BMC) was measured by dual photon absorptiometry in the lumbar spine, femoral neck and shaft, and proximal tibia in 26 individuals with spinal cord lesions sustained 2 to 25 years previously. In average BMC of the lumbar spine was within the range of normal values. BMC of the femoral neck and shaft was in average 25% lower than the normal values, and for the proximal tibia more than 50% lower than the normal value. Participants with cervical lesions had lower BMC values in the femoral bones than those with thoracic lesions. Neither presence of spasticity nor daily use of l

Osteopenia after osteotomy of the tibia.

Previous studies have shown a persisting bone mineral loss of 25% at the distal femoral and proximal tibial metaphysis after fractures of the tibia. This is likely to increase the risk of later fracture. In the present study, the evolution of regional osteopenia after valgus osteotomy of the proximal tibia was investigated. In 20 patients, the bone mineral content (BMC) on both sides was determined by single-energy photon absorptiometry in the distal metaphysis; distal, mid, and proximal diaphysis of the tibia; and the distal metaphysis and diaphysis of the femur preoperatively and 6, 16, 34,

Evaluation of factors associated with glucocorticoid-induced osteopenia in patients with rheumatic diseases.

In 161 ambulatory rheumatic disease patients receiving long-term prednisone therapy, diaphyseal mass (DM) and metaphyseal mass (MM) of the forearm were measured by single photon absorptiometry, and bone radiographs were reviewed when available. Multivariate analysis of treatment and patient characteristics demonstrated that glucocorticoid-induced osteopenia (defined as an elevated DM:MM ratio) and bone fractures occurred with similar frequency in patients of each sex, in whites and blacks, in patients with various rheumatic diseases, and in patients receiving different regimens of prednisone t

The effects of exercise on the bones of postmenopausal women.

The effects of walking and aerobic dancing on the bones of 73 recently postmenopausal women have been compared by photon absorptiometry of the distal radius with a control group who did not exercise. The period of observation was six months. Results showed that the control group and the walking group lost statistically significant amounts of bone mineral content (1.6%, and 1.7% respectively), but that the dancing group did not (0.8%). The control group did not show a significant increase in the bone width (0.9%), but both the dancing (1.3%) and walking (1.6%) groups did. Changes in the cross-s

Sex-related changes in the bone mineral content of atrophic mandibles.

In 25 edentulous anatomical mandible specimens (15 female, age range 69-90 years; 10 male, age range 68-88 years), the bone mineral content (BMC) was measured by dual-photon absorptiometry (DPA) and analyzed in a standardized area of the mandibular body. The results of our BMC examinations showed that there was a significant difference (P = 0.05) between the two sexes. Another notable fact was that, with advancing age, the values measured in the male mandibles tended to increase slightly but in a statistically significant way. Those of the female mandibles tended to decrease with age. A possib

Automated comparison of dual-photon absorptiometric studies of the lumbar spine.

An automated image comparison procedure was developed to optimize the precision of bone mineral density measurements by dual-photon absorptiometry. Changed acquisition conditions cause differences between two images to be compared. Alignment of one image with respect to the other is performed by a transformation that involves a rotation, a horizontal or vertical shift, and a correction for the soft tissue level. The best possible transformation is found in a stepwise search, guided by initial estimations of its parameters. After optimum transformation of one image, the region of interest of th

Osteoporosis and amenorrhea in young women.

Bone density of the radius was measured using both standard photon absorptiometry and X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning, and of the femur using CT, in 21 young women with amenorrhea and estrogen deficiency due to hyperprolactinemia, 8 due to ovarian failure or weight loss, 17 postmenopausal women with bone fractures presumed to be due to osteoporosis, and 36 young normal controls. Bone density in the postmenopausal women was reduced by 18-20% in the radius and 11% in the femur (p less than 0.001). In the hyperprolactinemic group bone density was significantly reduced only in the femur (b

Rate of bone loss in postmenopausal and osteoporotic women.

Regional and total bone mass were determined in three groups of women by photon absorptiometry of the distal radius [bone mineral content BMC)] and total body neutron activation analysis [total body calcium (TBCa)], respectively. There were three groups of patients: group A, osteoporotic women treated with a variety of pharmacologic agents; group B, osteoporotic women (controls) taking only calcium supplements; and group C, normal postmenopausal women. The mean TBCa and BMC were considerably higher in the postmenopausal women than in the osteoporotic women. The rate of change of bone mass in g

The effect of parathyroidectomy on bone mineral density in primary hyperparathyroidism.

Bone mineral density was studied before, and at one year after successful parathyroidectomy in six postmenopausal, three premenopausal females and one male with primary hyperparathyroidism. Dual photon absorptiometry was used to measure bone mineral density at the lumbar spine in all subjects, and at three areas of the hip in eight of the subjects. There was no significant change in bone mineral density at the lumbar spine after one year. Bone mineral density increased 7.4% at the femoral neck from 0.822 (SEM 0.053) g/cm2 to 0.895 (0.04) g/cm2; p less than 0.01, 8.7% at Wards triangle from 0.6

Effect of diet and lifestyle on bone mass in Asian young women.

The relationship between bone mineral content (BMC) divided by bone width (BW) and diet and lifestyle in early adulthood were investigated from the view point of preventing osteoporosis at a young age in Asian women. BMC/BW of 161 healthy Asian women aged 19-25 y were measured by single-photon absorptiometry. Current and past dietary habits and physical activity were also studied. BMC/BW varied from 0.21 to 0.48 g/cm2. Bone density correlated well with dietary habit from infancy to the present especially with calcium and past physical activity. These two factors showed additive effects on BMC/
