BACKGROUND: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the standard treatment for atherosclerotic lesions involving the carotid bifurcation. However, CEA can be challenging under some conditions. We describe the technique and outcome of prosthetic carotid bypass grafting (PCB) with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts as an elective alternative to CEA.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death remains the most common cause of death after repair of tetralogy of Fallot. It has been suggested that sudden cardiac death is related to right ventricular hypertrophy or dilation. However, it is uncertain whether the preoperative patient status or operative techniques predispose for sudden cardiac death.

Between December 1987 and December 1995, 62 patients underwent orthotopic cardiac transplantation at Green Lane Hospital. Their cardiac dysfunction resulted from dilated cardiomyopathy (32), coronary artery disease (21), rheumatic heart disease (7), congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (1) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (1). From 1972 to 1991, 237 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip were treated by exclusive LDR brachytherapy (192Ir). There were 158 T1, 61 T2, 17 T3 and 1 T4 with 231 N0, 3 N1 and 3 N2 patients. The natural history of endometrial carcinoma recurring first in an inguinal, axillary, or supraclavicular node as an isolated site is not well documented. Twenty-two patients with such a recurrence were examined between January 1963 and December 1986 at our institution. This event is associated with a higher initial surgical stage and tumor grade. Supraclavicular and inguinal recurrences occur with equal frequency. Axillary recurrences are rare. A series of 77 patients affected by lung cancer invading the chest wall who underwent surgery is reported. They were selected from 5236 lung cancer patients observed over a 25-year period. Chest pain was the presenting complaint, alone or with other symptoms, in 52 patient (76%). The duration of therapy and outcome were examined in 76 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica without evidence of temporal arteritis at presentation.
