Capturing daily well-being: psychometric evaluation of the MHC-SF in a daily diary design.

Research on well-being has predominantly relied on cross-sectional retrospective person-level assessments, which may overlook short-term fluctuations across contexts and time. The present study evaluated a daily diary adaptation of the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) in a 14-day experience sampling design comprising 13 end-of-day assessments followed by a final questionnaire on day 14 in a German-speaking sample (N = 262). The retrospective two-week MHC-SF and the daily adaptation of the MHC-SF were examined using traditional psychometric approaches (internal consistency, confirmat

Nutritional behaviors and adaptation before and after metabolic bariatric surgery: a qualitative study based on patient experiences.

BACKGROUND: Although metabolic bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity, qualitative evidence exploring patients' experiences across both pre- and post-operative periods remains limited. This study aimed to examine patients' decision-making experiences, nutritional behaviors, and perceptions of nursing care throughout this process. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study included individuals who had undergone metabolic bariatric surgery at least 12 months previously at a private hospital in Türkiye. Data were collected through focus group discussions (FGDs) followed by indi

Lost Legacies: The Dual Burden of Bereavement and Parenthood Under China's One-Child Policy.

This study examines the psychological impacts of only-child status and bereavement among older adults. Utilizing 2014-2020 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) data, the research assessed depression via the CESD-9 and social networks through the Lubben Social Network Scale-6. Findings reveal that while having an only child initially correlates with reduced depressive symptoms, losing that child significantly exacerbates mental health challenges and hinders social adaptation. This adverse interaction is primarily mediated by the shrinkage of family and friend networks. Heterogeneity a

Primitive mechanisms of trauma response: an evolutionary perspective on trauma-related disorders.

The symptoms we identify and the behaviors we recognize as defenses define which symptoms we see as trauma-related. Early conceptions of trauma-related disorders focused on physical signs of distress while current ones emphasize mental symptoms, but traumatizing experiences evoke psychobiological reactions. An evolutionary perspective presumes that psychophysical reactions to traumatizing events evolved to ensure survival. This theoretical review examines several primitive mechanisms (e.g., sensitization and dissolution) associated with responses to diverse stressors, from danger to life-threa

[Study of the long-term psychological consequences of heart valve prostheses].

The present follow-up period of cardiac surgery allows assessment of the long-term consequences of valvular prostheses, the short-term consequences having already been the object of many studies. 50 patients of both sexes, operated on for aortic or mitral valve disease between 1973 and 1974 were interviewed to assess their degree of psychological adaptation with regard to their cardiac status and the principal factors of adaptation. The position of the prosthetic valve (aortic or mitral) seemed to be of little importance and the prognosis depended rather on sex, age at operation, previous pers

Cultural Relevance and Acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Techniques Adapted by AI or a Human Psychologist: Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based psychological interventions are usually not accessed by marginalized groups such as refugees. Culturally adapted psychological interventions have reported larger effect sizes than nonadapted psychological interventions. However, the cultural adaptation of interventions is a lengthy process, entailing a challenge. One potential solution to overcome this challenge is the use of artificial intelligence (AI). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the perceived cultural relevance and acceptability of 2 common cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) t

Motor imagery, forward models and the cerebellum: a commentary on Rieger et al., 2023.

In this commentary on Rieger et al., Psychological Research Psychologische Forschung, 2023, I discuss possible ways to test the hypothesis that action imagery is achieved by simulations of actions through an internal forward model. These include brain imaging, perturbation through TMS, and psychophysical tests of adaptation of intended reach actions.

Psychological abuse and its influencing factors among home-dwelling older people in Northern China: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages, the subject of elder abuse has become more prominent, with psychological abuse of older people being particularly prevalent. This leads to a higher incidence of anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems among older people, reducing their quality of life, and even jeopardizing their safety. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate psychological abuse among home-dwelling older people in Northern China and its influencing factors. Participants were surveyed using a demographic questionnaire, activities of daily l

Volunteer service duration and career adaptability among Chinese university students: a self-determination theory perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Career adaptability has emerged as a crucial resource for university students navigating an increasingly volatile youth employment market. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study examined the associations among volunteer service duration, basic psychological needs satisfaction, and career adaptability among Chinese university students, as well as the moderating role of initial volunteering motivation. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 581 Chinese university students via an online platform. Participants reported their volunteer service duration a

Which coping classifications-problem versus emotion or engaged versus disengaged-best predict psychological distress in individuals with cardiac diseases? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study systematically synthesized evidence on the associations between coping strategies and psychological distress, specifically anxiety and depression, among individuals with cardiac diseases. It further assessed whether coping classifications based on engagement (engaged vs. disengaged) or focus (problem- vs. emotion-focused) better predicted emotional distress. METHOD: Nineteen eligible studies were analyzed using a three-level meta-analytic model. Effect sizes were grouped by coping strategy and outcome, and moderator analyses tested the influence of publication year and c

Mind over Malignancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Psychological Distress, Coping, and Therapeutic Interventions in Oncology.

Background and Objectives: Psychological distress is a pervasive yet often undertreated aspect of the cancer experience, contributing to reduced quality of life, poorer treatment adherence, and worse health outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of non-pharmacological, evidence-based psychological interventions on distress, depression, anxiety, coping capacity, and quality of life in adult cancer patients. Interventions were grouped into three domains: structured psychotherapeutic therapies (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy [CBT], Acceptance and Commitment

[Chronic tinnitus from a psychological perspective].

Chronic tinnitus is a common and often highly distressing phenomenon that, in its chronic phase, is primarily maintained by psychological factors. Individuals affected by tinnitus frequently attribute fluctuations in their emotional well-being causally to the tinnitus symptom. However, from a psychotherapeutic perspective, both the perception of symptoms and the resulting emotional distress are shaped by complex, dynamic interactions involving (a) personal life experiences, (b) personality traits, (c) the subjective interpretation of intrapsychic and interpersonal stimuli, (d) emotional states

Toward a Socioecological Understanding of Resilience in the Context of Chronic Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain is a prevalent condition that significantly affects physical functioning, psychological well-being, and quality of life. Resilience has emerged as a key factor in understanding effective coping and sustained functioning despite ongoing pain; however, existing conceptualizations and interventions primarily emphasize individual-level psychological traits and reflect Western, individualistic perspectives. This paper proposes a socioecological model to advance the conceptualization of resilience in the context of pain. DESIGN: Conceptual paper. METHODS: A narrative conce

Neuroautonomic Adaptive Resilience (NAR): The Proposal of a New Mechanism in the Context of the Neuroscience of Cognitive and Affective Aging. Definition and Operationalization.

Resilience mechanisms to counteract aging and the onset of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases are becoming an increasingly central issue due to the aging of the population. Several mechanisms have been hypothesized, and in the context of cognitive resilience, the construct of cognitive reserve has attracted considerable interest. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are several possible mechanisms of resilience (e.g., motor, affective, behavioral, etc.) which interact with each other, influencing inter-individual variability in healthy and pathological aging trajector

Silent burdens: global perspectives on grief and psychological strain among neuro-oncology neurosurgeons.

Neuro-oncology neurosurgeons (NONs) manage patients with progressive neurological decline, make high-stakes decisions, and face repeated exposure to death. While burnout has been recognized as a significant concern, grief and psychological strain remain underexplored as related, partly overlapping phenomena. To address this gap, we convened an exploratory international cohort of NONs to develop a dialogue-informed perspective on grief. Insights from semistructured roundtable discussions were used to explore how grief and psychological strain are experienced, their key triggers, coping approach
