Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nose, paranasal sinuses, and palate.

A retrospective study was performed on 18 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma involving the nose, paranasal sinuses, or palate. The most common symptoms seen initially were referable to a mass or epistaxis. Surgery was the only form of therapy associated with long survival, although the addition of postoperative radiation therapy appears to prolong survival. All recurrences were first noted in the primary area. Factors that correlated best with surgical were clear surgical margins and absence of cranial nerve involvement.

Assessment of quality of life before and after an adenotonsillectomy among children with hypertrophic tonsils and/or adenoids.

INTRODUCTION: Adenotonsillectomy is the most common surgical procedure in otolaryngology. The main indication for this procedure is upper airway obstruction associated with hypertrophic tonsils and/or adenoids. OBJECTIVES: To describe the differences in quality of life before and after an adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy and compare it with that of healthy children. POPULATION AND METHODS: All children aged 1 to 17 years old hospitalized for an elective surgery between July 2012 and April 2014 were enrolled. They were compared to a control group of children in the same age range. The survey …

Clusterin in human gut-associated lymphoid tissue, tonsils, and adenoids: localization to M cells and follicular dendritic cells.

The follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) overlying the follicles of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue is a key player in the initiation of m … ivity in M cells and labeling in the ER/Golgi biosynthetic pathway in FDCs. In palatine tonsils and adenoids, we demonstrated clusterin expression in germinal centers and in the lymphoepithelium in the crypts where M cells are localized. In conclusion, clusterin is expressed in M cells and follicular dendritic cells at inductive sites of human mucosa-assoc …

Expression of Fas ligand and CTLA4 in adenoids has a predictive value for allergic rhinitis development in children.

BACKGROUND: The balance of CD28/CTLA4-derived signals and Fas-dependent apoptosis activity is determined by the peripheral defense mechanisms and might play a role in the pathogenesis of allergy. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate the expression of costimulatory and pro- and antiapoptotic molecules in adenoid T cells of children suffering from allergic rhinitis and to find out which of these molecules have a predictive value in the development of allergic rhinitis. METHODS: The adenoids of 60 children, removed because of nasal obstruction, chronic rhinitis and recurrent resp…

Effect of antimicrobial therapy with amoxicillin and cefprozil on bacterial interference and beta-lactamase production in the adenoids.

To compare the effects on the bacterial flora of the adenoids of antimicrobial therapy with amoxicillin or cefprozil, we enrolled in a prospective randomized study 60 children scheduled for elective adenoidectomy because of recurrent otitis media. They were randomized before surgery into 3 groups of 20 patients each: a no-therapy group, and groups with 10 days of either amoxicillin or cefprozil therapy. Core adenoid materials were quantitatively cultured for aerobic and facultative bacteria. The in vitro ability of alpha-hemolytic streptococci (AHS) to inhibit the growth of non-type B Haemophi…

Obstructive hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils as a cause of infantile failure to thrive: reversed by tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

Isolated failure to thrive in an infant caused by chronic hypoventilation due to hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils, has not been previously described. A 9 month-old infant presented with weight loss and mild clinical respiratory signs. Hypoxemia and CO2 retention, however, were documented by transcutaneous gas measurement, and ENT examination revealed enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy at 9 1/2 months of age completely reversed the patient's hypoventilation and growth pattern. While the exact mechanism of failure to thrive secondary to upper airway obstruction in in…

Time to Rethink Pathology Reporting in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: To propose a practical, biologically informed pathology reporting framework for adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) that integrates conventional morphology with selective biomarker assessment. METHODS: A narrative review of current pathological reporting standards, emerging proteogenomic evidence, and clinically relevant biomarkers was performed. Based on available evidence, a stepwise reporting strategy was developed in which routine histopathological evaluation remains the foundation, while additional immunohistochemical and molecular analyses are selectively recommended for high-risk

Acoustic rhinometry for the assessment of adenoid hypertrophy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common condition in children and a leading cause of upper airway obstruction, associated with sleep-disordered breathing, recurrent otitis media, and chronic rhinosinusitis. Although nasal endoscopy is the most widely used diagnostic tool, its invasiveness and limited correlation with functional obstruction in intermediate cases highlight the need for alternative methods. Acoustic rhinometry (AR) is a non-invasive technique that measures nasal and nasopharyngeal geometry and may overcome several limitations of conventional assessments. OBJECTIVE: To system

Adenoid ameloblastoma: Conservative approach in a rare odontogenic lesion.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid ameloblastoma (AA) is a newly recognized, rare odontogenic tumor variant, distinguished by histopathological features that combine characteristics of both ameloblastoma and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old female with an unilocular radiolucent lesion in the mandible associated with the impacted third molar, diagnosed as AA. Surgical management included complete lesion excision and cryotherapy. Despite the absence of significant symptoms, clinical surveillance is essential, as AA may have high recurrence rates. The recent inclusion of this entity in

Curative approaches for adenoid cystic carcinoma: a multifaceted disease.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the salivary glands is a rare malignancy characterized by a poor outcome at long term follow-up. While the locoregional treatment of the primary tumor is mainly based on surgery and radiation therapy, the disease typically recurs at distance, for which curative options are frequently lacking. Despite advancements in therapeutic approaches, to date the optimal management strategy in the recurrent/metastatic setting remains unclear due to the limited availability of high-quality evidence, thus optimization of curative treatment is of outmost importance. This na

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Bartholin Gland: A Case Report.

Carcinoma of the Bartholin gland is a rare malignant tumor of the female genital tract, subcategorized within primary carcinomas of the vulva. The histopathological variant adenoid cystic carcinoma is extremely rare. There is no specific, consensus treatment for this pathology, but the gold standard is surgical removal. We present the case of a 30-year-old female patient with a history of Barrett's esophagus, who underwent specific treatment and presented with a lesion in the right vulvar region that had been causing moderate pain and localized itching for several months. She underwent surgery

Hybrid adenoid cystic carcinoma of the palate with dual features.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, slowly growing salivary gland neoplasm distinguished by its versatile phenotype and destructive clinical course. Its underlying aetiology is unclear. It is characterised by a gradual yet infiltrative progression, perineural invasion (PNI), a worse prognosis, late recurrence and distant metastases. ACC is recognised for its unique histological features and susceptibility to PNI.We present a case of a female in her 50s with a history of progressively enlarging swelling in the right palate diagnosed as a "hybrid variant of adenoid cystic carcinoma". Histo

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Bartholin's Gland: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) originating in the Bartholin's gland is a rare entity. We report the case of a female in her 50s who presented with a progressively enlarging right-sided vulvar mass and intermittent pain. Although preoperative biopsy and MRI suggested a benign lesion, postoperative histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of ACC. ACC can be challenging to diagnose using MRI, and misidentifying it as a benign lesion can lead to insufficient surgical treatment and a poorer prognosis. Therefore, ACC should be included in the differential diagnosis of vulvar soft-tissue

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland - A major review.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lacrimal gland is a rare orbital neoplasm. Despite this, it remains the most common epithelial malignancy of the lacrimal gland. It is notorious for high rates of local recurrence, metastases, and mortality despite aggressive management. The treatment protocols range from orbital exenteration or an excision biopsy followed by adjuvant therapy in the form of radiotherapy or chemotherapy or sometimes both. Older studies suggest that orbital exenteration may result in better local control of disease and possibly better long-term survival. This outlook has bee
