Understanding Racial Disparities in Exposure to Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Considering the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Population Distribution.

This study investigates the effect of spatiotemporal distributions of racial groups on disparities in exposure to traffic-related air pollution by considering people's daily movement patterns. Due to human mobility, a residential neighborhood does not fully represent the true geographic context in which people experience racial segregation and unequal exposure to air pollution. Using travel-activity survey data containing individuals' activity locations and time spent at each location, this study measures segregation levels that an individual might experience during the daytime and nighttime,

Coupling Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations and Statistical Moments for Designing Healthy Indoor Spaces.

Cross-contamination between occupants in an indoor space may occur due to transfer of infectious aerosols. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides detailed insight into particle transport in indoor spaces. However, such simulations are site-specific. This study couples CFD with statistical moments and establishes a framework that transitions site-specific results to generating guidelines for designing "Работает" indoor spaces. Eighteen cases were simulated, and three parameters were assessed: inlet/outlet location, air changes per hour, and the presence/absence of desks. Aerosol release due

COVID-19 pandemic interventions reshaped the global dispersal of seasonal influenza viruses.

The global dynamics of seasonal influenza viruses inform the design of surveillance, intervention, and vaccination strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic provided a singular opportunity to evaluate how influenza circulation worldwide was perturbed by human behavioral changes. We combine molecular, epidemiological, and international travel data and find that the pandemic's onset led to a shift in the intensity and structure of international influenza lineage movement. During the pandemic, South Asia played an important role as a phylogenetic trunk location of influenza A viruses, whereas West Asia m

Flashing liquid jets and two-phase droplet dispersion II. Comparison and validation of droplet size and rainout formulations.

Loss of containment often results in flashing releases of hazardous chemicals into the atmosphere. Rainout of these chemicals reduces airborne concentrations, but can also lead to extended cloud duration because of re-evaporation of the rained-out liquid. Therefore, for hazard assessment one must use models which accurately predict both the amount of rainout and its rate of re-evaporation. However, the findings of a literature survey reveal weaknesses in the state-of-the-art for modelling the sub-processes of droplet atomisation, atmospheric expansion, two-phase dispersion, rainout, pool forma

Measurement of respiratory morbidity in general practice in the United Kingdom during the acid transport event of January 1985.

The Weekly Returns System of the Royal College of General Practitioners was used to assess the effect on respiratory illness of the acid transport event that occurred during January 1985. The pollution event, as assessed by SO2 and smoke levels measured at pollution monitoring stations within and without the affected area showed only modest rises in SO2 levels, which were less than levels that occurred 4 years earlier. January is the peak time of year for reporting of acute respiratory episodes, and the minor increase in pollution was not reflected in any rise in respiratory morbidity, both fo

Airborne virus transmission under different weather conditions.

The COVID19 infection is known to disseminate through droplets ejected by infected individuals during coughing, sneezing, speaking, and breathing. The spread of the infection and hence its menace depend on how the virus-loaded droplets evolve in space and time with changing environmental conditions. In view of this, we investigate the evolution of the droplets within the purview of the Brownian motion of the evaporating droplets in the air with varying weather conditions under the action of gravity. We track the movement of the droplets until either they gravitationally settle on the ground or

"Fish Gill" Incisions for Severe Periorbital Surgical Emphysema Following Tension Pneumothorax - A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Surgical emphysema refers to the presence of air within the subcutaneous space and is a known complication of chest drain insertion. Symptoms range from mild crepitus of the chest wall to the accumulation of air in the face and neck, which can ultimately result in cardiovascular compromise. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to present a rare case of cervical, facial and periorbital surgical emphysema following chest drain insertion, and describes a novel use of 'fish gill' incisions in the palpebromalar groove with an associated review of the literature. CASE REPORT: A 68-yea

Clinical significance of stapedioplasty biomechanics: swimming, diving, flying after stapes surgery.

A piston prosthesis in stapedioplasty significantly modifies the function of the normal ossicular chain. Due to the fact that the ear works as a pressure receptor, a piston prosthesis will be displaced at ambient air pressure changes in a different way than the normal stapes. Our ear is constantly exposed to these pressure changes in daily live, for example during swallowing, with tubal opening, with wind gusts at the external ear, during flying, or diving. Temporal bone experiments showed that elevated static pressures, like in tympanometry, can displace a piston up to 0.5mm in the vestibule.

Travelers' thrombosis.

The suggestion that venous thromboembolism (VTE) is associated with air travel has for several decades been the subject of both "media hype" and extensive debate in the medical literature. As emotion and anecdote is often a feature in this debate, it is therefore necessary to separate evidence from anecdote. "Travelers' thrombosis" is a more appropriate term because the evidence suggests that any form of travel involving immobility lasting more than 4 h can predispose to thrombosis. There is no unique factor in the air travel cabin environment that has been shown to have any effect on the coag

General discrete modelling of lung sound production in normal subjects.

Lung sound analysis is of a major importance in diagnostic malfunctions of the respiratory system. In normal subjects, it is known that these sounds are caused by the interaction of the respiratory flows with the bronchial tree structure. However, the detailed knowledge of the reasons for the spectral characteristics of such sounds remains to be elucidated. In this paper we propose a model for normal lung sound production based on a discretization of air flow in particle-like elements. Their transport with the involved interactions is implemented using a pseudo-molecular dynamics Monte Carlo p

Model simulations of NOx and ultrafine particles close to a Swedish highway.

Based on the results from a 6-week monitoring campaign in an area close to a major highway north of Stockholm, Sweden, NOx emission factors representative for vehicle speeds of 100-120 km per h were determined to 0.61 g/veh,km for light duty and to 7.1 g/veh,km for heavy duty vehicles. The corresponding factors for particle number were 1.4 x 10(14) and 52 x 10(14) particles/veh,km, determined for an ambient temperature interval of +7 to +17 degrees C. The removal effects of coagulation and dry deposition on total number concentrations were assessed by numerical model simulations. Velocity and

Numerical simulations to determine the most appropriate welding and ventilation conditions in small enclosed workspace.

In order to improve arc welding work in a small enclosed workspace, numerical simulations were conducted to find the most appropriate welding and ventilation conditions, such as welding currents, hood position and flow rates with no blowhole formation. In the simulations, distributions of airflow vectors and fume concentrations were calculated for two hood opening positions: one faced a welder's breathing zone, the other a contaminant source. As a result it was predicted that a hood opening facing a breathing zone remarkably lowered the fume concentration in the breathing zone compared with th

Xenon/hypothermia neuroprotection regimes in spontaneously breathing neonatal rats after hypoxic-ischemic insult: the respiratory and sedative effects.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia (HT) reduces neuronal injury after perinatal asphyxia. The anesthetic gas xenon (XE) may enhance this effect. We investigated the sedative and respiratory effects of variable XE concentrations at 37 degrees C normothermia (NT) or 32 degrees C HT after a hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insult to determine the concentration at which XE was a respiratory depressant in spontaneously breathing 7-day-old rat pups. METHODS: (I) In three control groups, the effects of fasting at NT and HT were investigated. (II) Six groups were subjected to a HI insult (left carotid ligation then 90 min

The aerodynamic impact of a range of prostheses designs when cycling with a trans-tibial amputation.

Previous studies have proposed that an aerodynamically optimized prosthetic limb could provide performance enhancement for competitive paracyclists. Four different designs of prosthetic limbs were assessed for their impact upon the aerodynamic drag of an elite cyclist with a lower-limb amputation. The pylon area acted as the controlled location for the differences in design between the test prostheses. A validated field test method was used to derive the participant's total aerodynamic drag when using the prostheses designs. The field test method produced a repeatable experimental process and
