The US opioid epidemic has changed profoundly in the last 3 years, in ways that require substantial recalibration of the US policy response. This report summarizes the changing nature of overdose deaths in Jefferson County (home to Birmingham, Alabama) using data updated through June 30, 2016. Epilepsy, commonly encountered by patients with brain tumors, is often refractory to standard therapies. In a retrospective review of patients seen at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Cleft and Craniofacial Center, four patients with rare interrupted clefting were identified who had undergone genetic testing. Six cases of severed intestines in farm-raised channel catfish were examined at fish disease diagnostic laboratories in Mississippi and Alabama. IMPORTANCE: Flavored e-cigarettes are the most-used tobacco product among US youths and young adults. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized only 45 e-cigarette products, while thousands remain under review. Some states have enacted laws permitting sales of non-FDA-authorized products listed on state directories, but the impact of these laws is unknown.
