How does the mapped ICD data in an EHR system compare to the hospital DAD data in Alberta, Canada?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Coding by human coders is burdensome to healthcare systems requiring advanced computerized techniques. Epic has collaborated with Intelligent Medical Objects (IMO) solution to integrate a solution where the clinical interface terminology is mapped to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). This study assesses the agreement between the solution mapped ICD-10-CA codes in Alberta, Canada's EHR system (based on Epic) to the human coded ICD-10-CA codes in hospital Discharge Abstract Database (DAD). DESIGN AND SETTING: In this retrospective analysis conducted i…

"The Children Are Not Controllable Because They Follow Western Values" - Narratives of the Parenting Experiences of African Immigrants in Alberta, Canada.

African immigrants are moving to high-income nations such as Canada in greater numbers in search of a better life. These immigrants frequently struggle with several issues, including limited social support, shifts in gender roles/status, cultural conflicts with their children, and language barriers. We used participatory action research (PAR) to gather data about Sub-Saharan African immigrants residing in Alberta, Canada, with a focus on their viewpoints, difficulties, and experiences of parenting children in Canada. We contextualized our study and its findings using both postcolonial feminism…

Impact of Comorbidity on Hospitalization and Emergency Room Visits in Adults With Diabetes: A Longitudinal Study of Alberta's Tomorrow Project.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim in this study was to characterize the impact of comorbidities, including number and types, on hospitalization and emergency room (ER) visits in people with diabetes. METHODS: Incident cases of diabetes from Alberta's Tomorrow Project with >24 months of follow-up were included. Comorbidities, classified by Elixhauser conditions, were updated every 12 months after diagnosis. A generalized estimating equation model was used to examine the association (by incidence rate ratio [IRR]) between time-varying comorbidity profile and hospitalization and ER visits per year of follow-up…

Effects of changing freestall area on lameness, lying time, and leg injuries on dairy farms in Alberta, Canada.

Cow comfort is of increasing importance in the dairy industry, due to an increased focus on animal welfare. However, whether producer changes to the cows' environment affect cow comfort has not been well characterized. Our objectives were to: (1) quantify the effect of freestall area changes on the prevalence of lameness, leg injuries, and average lying time; and (2) compare cow comfort outcomes on farms that had never had an assessment of cow comfort to farms that had had a previous assessment of cow comfort. A sample of 60 Holstein-Friesian cows were selected on each of 15 farms that made ch

Research-Focused Isolation of Human Islets From Donors With and Without Diabetes at the Alberta Diabetes Institute IsletCore.

Recent years have seen an increased focus on human islet biology, and exciting findings in the stem cell and genomic arenas highlight the need to define the key features of mature human islets and β-cells. Donor and organ procurement parameters impact human islet yield, although for research purposes islet yield may be secondary in importance to islet function. We examined the feasibility of a research-only human islet isolation, distribution, and biobanking program and whether key criteria such as cold ischemia time (CIT) and metabolic status may be relaxed and still allow successful research

The application of medical informatics to the veterinary management programs at companion animal practices in Alberta, Canada: a case study.

Companion animals closely share their domestic environment with people and have the potential to, act as sources of zoonotic diseases. They also have the potential to be sentinels of infectious and noninfectious, diseases. With the exception of rabies, there has been minimal ongoing surveillance of, companion animals in Canada. We developed customized data extraction software, the University of, Calgary Data Extraction Program (UCDEP), to automatically extract and warehouse the electronic, medical records (EMR) from participating private veterinary practices to make them available for, disease

The molecular epidemiology of Cryptosporidium and Giardia infections in coyotes from Alberta, Canada, and observations on some cohabiting parasites.

Coyotes from southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, were examined for the presence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium and cohabiting helminths. Toxascaris was present in over 90% of the 70 animals examined, and Taenia sp. in 6.5-25% of the two groups of animals studied. Giardia (12.5-21.7%) and Cryptosporidium (0-17.4%) were also common and molecular characterisation revealed both zoonotic and host-adapted genotypes of Giardia, whereas the Cryptosporidium proved to be a variant of the canine species C. canis. The seasonal variation observed in the occurrence of Cryptosporidium may be related t…

The pattern of fatal fibrinous pneumonia (shipping fever) affecting calves in a large feedlot in Alberta (1985-1988).

Data from a retrospective field study were used to describe the epidemiology of fatal fibrinous pneumonia as it affected beef calves entering a large commercial feedlot in southwestern Alberta during the fall months of y 1985 to 1988. A chute-side computer system was used to record processing and health data on 58885 calves during this period. The large annual variation (10%-57%) in the proportion of total mortality due to fibrinous pneumonia indicated that crude mortality cannot be used in epidemiological studies as a surrogate measure of fibrinous pneumonia mortality. Yearly epidemic curves …
