Chitin nanocrystals/alginate complex for tuning stability, rheology and bioavailability of cholecalciferol in Pickering emulsions.

In this paper we investigate polyelectrolyte complexes of sodium alginate (Alg) and chitin nanocrystals (ChNC). Formation, stability and transport properties of sunflower oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by ChNC-Alg complex were studied using dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser Doppler electrophoresis, optical microscopy, potentiometric titration, rheology and simulated digestion. It has been established that during emulsions formation, the ChNC-Alg complex is rearranged at the interface and the formation of a two-layer coating of the droplet occurs. Stabilized O/W emulsions are stable duri

Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Alginate Film Barriers for Abdominal Surgery: Anti-Adhesion Effect in Murine Model.

Surgical operations on the peritoneum are often associated with the formation of adhesions, which can interfere with the normal functioning of the internal organs. The effectiveness of existing barrier materials is relatively low. In this work, the effectiveness of soluble alginate-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-Alg) and non-soluble Ca ion cross-linked (PVP-Alg-Ca) films in preventing these adhesions was evaluated. Experiments in vivo were performed on mice via mechanical injury to the adjacent peritoneum wall and the caecum, followed by the application of PVP-Alg or PVP-Alg-Ca films to the injured

Dry alginate beads for fecal microbiota transplantation: From model strains to fecal samples.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a critical nosocomial infection with more than 124,000 cases per year in Europe and a mortality rate of 15-17 %. The standard of care (SoC) is antibiotic treatment. Unfortunately, the relapse rate is high (∼35 %) and SoC is significantly less effective against recurrent infection (rCDI). Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a recommended treatment against rCDI from the second recurrence episode and has an efficacy of 90 %. The formulation of diluted donor stool deserves innovation because its actual administration routes deserve optimization (na

Graphene-Enhanced Methacrylated Alginate Gel Films for Sustainable Dye Removal in Water Purification.

Self-standing nanocomposite films were prepared by three-dimensional UV-induced radical copolymerization of methacrylated alginate (MALG) with acrylic acid (AA) and reinforced with graphene oxide (GO) to improve both mechanical strength and dye adsorption capacity in wastewater decontamination operations. Dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis revealed variations in storage modulus: the higher the GO content, the higher the storage modulus (E') values. Also, the higher the temperature (associated with a lower and lower water content of films), the larger values of E' for the films of the same com

Root-shaped antibacterial alginate sponges with enhanced hemostasis and osteogenesis for the prevention of dry socket.

Tooth extraction commonly causes uncontrolled bleeding, loss of blood clots, and bacterial infection, leading to the dry socket and bone resorption. Thus, it is highly attractive to design a bio-multifunctional scaffold with outstanding antimicrobial, hemostatic, and osteogenic performances for avoiding dry sockets in clinical applications. Herein, alginate (AG)/quaternized chitosan (Qch)/diatomite (Di) sponges were fabricated via electrostatic interaction, Ca2+ cross-linking, as well as lyophilization methods. The composite sponges are facilely made into the shape of the tooth root, which cou

Inhibitory activities of alginate phosphate and sulfate derivatives against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro.

Alginate derivatives have been demonstrated remarkable antiviral activities. Here we firstly identified polymannuronate phosphate (PMP) as a highly potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 agent. The structure-activity relationship showed polymannuronate monophosphate (PMPD, Mw: 5.8 kDa, P%: 8.7 %) was the most effective component to block the interaction of spike to ACE2 with an IC50 of 85.5 nM. Surface plasmon resonance study indicated that PMPD could bind to spike receptor binding domain (RBD) with the KD value of 78.59 nM. Molecular docking further suggested that the probable binding site of PMPD to spik
