Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is a benign and temporary loss of anterograde memory with the preservation of remote memories and immediate recall. TGA was first described in 1956 and since then epilepsy, transient ischaemic attacks (TIA), migraine and now intracranial venous stasis have been implicated in its aetiology. Precipitants of TGA include physical exertion and valsalva-like manoeuvres. In order to diagnose TGA the criteria created by Hodge and Warlow in 1990 can be used. This requires the episode of memory loss to be witnessed and involve anterograde amnesia. The patient must not have

To evaluate if short (less than one hour) or recurrent, or both, episodes of transient global amnesia (TGA) have an epileptic origin or carry a subsequent risk of epilepsy a group of patients with these types of TGA attacks was studied. The group was selected from a prospective series of 103 patients with TGA. Sixteen patients had an episode lasting less than one hour, 13 had more than one episode, and five patients had both short and recurrent attacks. For each patient the number of recurrences was small (four or less) and they were separated by months or years. During short attacks of TGA ma

A patient with transient global amnesia (TGA) had a glioma in the dominant hippocampus. Neuroradiologic studies showed local mass effect on the posterior choroidal artery on that side. This finding suggests that unilateral involvement is sufficient to cause the syndrome despite the widely held view that bilateral lesions are essential.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent transient global amnesia (TGA) may not be as benign as a single episode of TGA. However, the factors involved in TGA recurrence are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of recurrent TGA among patients admitted to our neurology department due to an episode of TGA, and identify factors that may be associated with TGA recurrence.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the computerized database and the medical records of patients admitted to the adult neurology department at Shamir-Assaf Harofeh Medical Center due to an episode of TGA during a 14-year period between 2009

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Opioid-associated amnestic syndrome (OAS) and transient global amnesia (TGA) are conditions with clinical overlap. We therefore sought to determine whether opioid use might be associated with TGA.
METHODS: Data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Syndromic Surveillance program were queried to ascertain the frequency of opioid use among emergency department (ED) encounters for TGA compared to that for all other ED visits between January 2019 and June 2023.
RESULTS: A total of 13,188,630 ED visits were identified during the study period. Of 1417 visits fo

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The etiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) remains unclear in a large subset of patients. We aimed to determine the clinical and radiological characteristics of TGA-patients with suspected acute micro-embolic stroke on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).
METHODS: TGA-patients that had new DWI hippocampal lesions (DWI+) were compared to DWI negative TGA-patients (DWI-). Demographics, risk factors, clinical data, radiological data, and mortality were analyzed.
RESULTS: Out of 83 patients diagnosed with TGA, 56 (65%) underwent MRI during the acute hospitalization and 2

Transient global amnesia (TGA) can be triggered by a high level of blood cortisol. We assessed whether patients had a higher level of cortisol during the TGA than shortly after. We included 52 patients, 21 with blood collected during the TGA episode and 31 shortly thereafter. We compared these two groups after adjustment for time of blood collection. The cortisol level was significantly higher in the per-ictal group (P=0.03) and negatively correlated with the time elapsed from symptom onset (P=0.005). The results are consistent with of the hypothesis of a hyperreactivity of the hypothalamic-pi

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare, benign condition characterised by a sudden deficit of anterograde and retrograde memory that usually lasts for a few hours and is not accompanied by other focal neurological symptoms or signs. Its aetiology is still unclear. Various events or activities may trigger TGA. Evidence of seasonal variations in the appearance of TGA is inconsistent.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the medical history of 114 adult patients with diagnosed TGA, hospitalised at two neurology departments in Wrocław from 2008 to 2014. We reviewed risk factors, tri

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have shown that patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) experience a depressive mood during the episode. However, little evidence has been found of possible mood congruency effects on memory, which are probably masked by the massive anterograde amnesia. An implicit assessment could provide a means of settling this question.
METHODS: First, we measured patients' emotional states on psychopathological scales. Second, we administered a lexical decision task to assess three priming effects: Semantic priming (SP; table-chair), emotional priming (EP; murder-garbage

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a temporary amnestic syndrome characterized by anterograde amnesia and variable retrograde amnesia without other focal neurological deficits. Neuropsychological tests during attack in TGA have been rarely reported. We report a 62-year-old man with TGA who was evaluated with detailed neuropsychological tests during attack. Ictal neuropsychological tests showed encoding failure in verbal and visual memory with frontal/executive dysfunction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lesions in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI-L) have been commonly described in transient global amnesia (TGA). We investigated a possible relationship between brain ischemia and TGA.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients underwent transcranial and carotid Doppler ultrasonography (including microembolus detection) and MRI within 24 hours of TGA onset (including DWI, perfusion-weighted imaging and angio-MRI). MRI was repeated at 48 to 96 hours (21 patients) and 30 days (18 patients).
RESULTS: Punctate DWI-L were observed in 16 patients (57%) and were not attributable to perfusi

Transient global amnesia(TGA) had been recognized as a disease without abnormal findings on neuroimaging before magnetic resonance(MRI) imaging was practicable. Recently, abnormal findings on MRI reported in cases of TGA. We here reported a case of TGA showing a transient abnormal intensity in left hippocampus on MRI diffusion-weighted image. A 52-year-old man suddenly became to unable to keep his recent memory without histories of trauma or epilepsy. He showed no abnormal neurologic findings excepting for the recent memory. MRI performed within an hour after onset demonstrated no abnormality

A Japanese female case of transient global amnesia (TGA), who developed an amnesic episode after sexual intercourse, is reported. The mechanism of how TGA in the present case is precipitated by sexual intercourse could be explained by the elevated blood pressure during sexual intercourse that drops rapidly, causing a temporal ischemia in the distribution of the basilar artery. Furthermore, the importance of sexual intercourse as a precipitating factor of TGA is stressed.
