Aortic Size Index Versus Aortic Diameter in the Prediction of Rupture in Women With Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) pose significant challenges in clinical management, particularly in female patients, whose unique anatomical and physiological characteristics influence rupture risk. While aortic diameter (AD) has traditionally been the primary metric for predicting rupture, its limitations, especially in women, have spurred exploration into alternative measures such as the aortic size index (ASI). This review examines the anatomy and physiology of AAAs in women, gender-specific challenges in diagnosis and management, and the comparative effectiveness of ASI versus AD in pred

[Single photon emission computed tomography of patients with benign and malignant spinal diseases].

SPECT has been used in a comparative study with planar bone scintigraphy in 54 patients. Spatial resolution of the method is sufficient to localise the vertebral bodies, the spinous processes, the intervertebral, costotransverse and costovertebral joints. In all patients it was possible to relate the areas of increased uptake to specific anatomical sites of the spine known to be affected in the different conditions. A detailed localisation is rarely possible using planar scintigraphy alone, due to the complex osseous anatomy of the spine. In some patients lesions could be seen only with SPECT.

[Extracorporeal reconstruction of arteries of a transplant of the liver for its subsequent implantation and surgical aspects of arterial anatomy the hepatoduodenal area].

Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) remains the only and radical method of treating patients with terminal stages of chronic diffuse hepatic diseases (cirrhoses), of patients with various congenital metabolic lesions of the liver, autoimmune diseases characterized by lesions of bile ducts, as well as series of both primary and secondary tumorous hepatic lesions. Liver transplantation is one of the most complicated operative interventions. Difficulty of OLT is determined by multifactorial and well-coordinated work of various medical services at the pre-, intra- and postoperative stage of man

Novel Intraoperative Applications of Fluorescence Imaging Using Indocyanine Green in Pediatric Urology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIRF) with the use of indocyanine green (ICG) has been recently adopted in pediatric urology after its well-published use in the adult population. As a powerful tool that can help delineate complex anatomy and congenital anomalies, we discuss the various applications of this imaging in minimally invasive and open surgery in pediatric urology. RECENT FINDINGS: The most reported applications of ICG in pediatric urology are within minimally invasive surgery, particularly varicoceles, renal surgery such as nephrectomies and renal tumor excisi

Mechanisms of failure of endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux based on endoscopic anatomy.

PURPOSE: We examined the mechanisms responsible for technical failure of the endoscopic technique for correcting vesicoureteral reflux based on endoscopic anatomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 25 patients, 2 to 15 years old (mean age 8) who received 57 ureteral injections on 1 or more occasions which failed to correct reflux. Each endoscopic procedure for every patient was videotaped and endoscopic photographs were taken to document pretreatment and posttreatment anatomy. Based on the comparative endoscopic anatomical findings, failures were categorized as secondary to volume los

Zebrafish as an Animal Model for Ocular Toxicity Testing: A Review of Ocular Anatomy and Functional Assays.

Xenobiotics make their way into organisms from diverse sources including diet, medication, and pollution. Our understanding of ocular toxicities from xenobiotics in humans, livestock, and wildlife is growing thanks to laboratory animal models. Anatomy and physiology are conserved among vertebrate eyes, and studies with common mammalian preclinical species (rodent, dog) can predict human ocular toxicity. However, since the eye is susceptible to toxicities that may not involve a histological correlate, and these species rely heavily on smell and hearing to navigate their world, discovering visua

MYL4 Identifies Intramural Anatomy of Purkinje Fibers in Human Hearts.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac Purkinje fibers (PFs) orchestrate myocardial synchrony, but in regions of myocardial scarring, drive ventricular arrhythmia. It is hypothesized that arrhythmias refractory to ablation may be driven by PFs deep in the scarred myocardium. However, knowledge of human PF anatomy remains reliant on data generated in animal models, obscuring understanding of the substrate underpinning dysrhythmia and pacing strategies. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to establish and utilize a human biomarker to delineate PF anatomy in humans. METHODS: RNA-sequencing and differential expression a

Morphological and morphometrical studies on the tongue of the juvenile cattle egret (Bulbucus ibis).

Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) is a cosmopolitan heron species, with least concern conservation status. There are limited literatures on the anatomy of this bird, especially in relation to its sensory organs, hence we here investigated the gross morphological and histomorphometric features of its tongue. The tongues of twelve healthy juvenile cattle egrets were examined in situ for morphological appearance and gross morphometric measurements were determined ex situ. Routine histology was conducted on the tongue tissue with parameters such as epithelial and lamina propia heights, lingual muscle a

Clinical outcomes and radiological assessment of vascular anatomy in patients who underwent D3 left hemicolectomy.

BACKGROUND: Adequate blood supply is one of the key factors for colorectal anastomosis healing. Various variants of vascular anatomy often come as a surprise to surgeons during operations. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to carry out a comparative analysis of three-dimensional-computed tomography (3D-CT) angiography data with intraoperative data and a detailed analysis of variants of the anatomy of splenic flexure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, we included 103 patients (56 males and 47 females; mean age 64.2 ± 11.6) with the left-sided colon and rectal cancer who underwent pre

Origin and Distribution of the Brachial Plexus Nerves in Northern Tamandua (Tamandua mexicana).

Tamandua mexicana is a species of the superorder Xenarthra that is found in many regions of Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. This species is important because it is a model for comparative studies of the evolutionary anatomy of xenarthrans. However, there are few anatomical studies on which to base these areas, such as the anatomy of the brachial plexus. Several studies use the brachial plexus anatomy for phylogenetic analysis and medical procedures. Thus, this study aimed to describe the origin and distribution of the brachial plexus in T. mexicana. Twelve specimens of T. mexica

Composition of encephalic arteries and origin of the basilar artery are different between vertebrates.

Intracranial arterial anatomy is lacking for most mammalian and non-mammalian model species, especially concerning the origin of the basilar artery (BA). Enhancing the knowledge of this anatomy can improve animal models and help understanding anatomical variations in humans. We have studied encephalic arteries in three different species of birds and eight different species of mammals using formalin-fixed brains injected with arterial red latex. Our results and literature analysis indicate that, for all vertebrates, the internal carotid artery (ICA) supplies the brain and divides into two branc

Diversity and evolution of cerebellar folding in mammals.

The process of brain folding is thought to play an important role in the development and organisation of the cerebrum and the cerebellum. The study of cerebellar folding is challenging due to the small size and abundance of its folia. In consequence, little is known about its anatomical diversity and evolution. We constituted an open collection of histological data from 56 mammalian species and manually segmented the cerebrum and the cerebellum. We developed methods to measure the geometry of cerebellar folia and to estimate the thickness of the molecular layer. We used phylogenetic comparativ

Three-dimensional Printing in Anatomy Education: Assessing Potential Ethical Dimensions.

New technological developments have frequently had major consequences for anatomy education, and have raised ethical queries for anatomy educators. The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing of human material is showing considerable promise as an educational tool that fits alongside cadaveric dissection, plastination, computer simulation, and anatomical models and images. At first glance its ethical implications appear minimal, and yet the more extensive ethical implications around clinical bioprinting suggest that a cautious approach to 3D printing in the dissecting room is in order. Tour of a labyrinth: exploring the vertebrate nose.

This special issue of The Anatomical Record is the outcome of a symposium entitled "Inside the Vertebrate Nose: Evolution, Structure and Function." The skeletal framework of the nasal cavity is a complicated structure that often houses sinuses and comprises an internal skeleton of bone or cartilage that can vary greatly in architecture among species. The nose serves multiple functions, including olfaction and respiratory air-conditioning, and its morphology is constrained by evolution, development, and conflicting demands on cranial space, such as enlarged orbits. The nasal cavity of vertebrat

The 2014 ABJS Nicolas Andry Award: The puzzle of the thumb: mobility, stability, and demands in opposition.

BACKGROUND: The paradoxical demands of stability and mobility reflect the purpose and function of the human thumb. Its functional importance is underscored when a thumb is congenitally absent, injured, or afflicted with degenerative arthritis. Prevailing literature and teaching implicate the unique shape of the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, as well as its ligament support, applied forces, and repetitive motion, as culprits causing osteoarthritis (OA). Sex, ethnicity, and occupation may predispose individuals to OA. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: What evidence links ligament structure, forces, and m

[Isolated dislocation in the distal radio-ulnar joint].

Anatomy, injury-mechanism and classification will be illustrated with a casuistry of the rate isolated luxation of the ulnar head. Diagnosis is established clinically and with comparative X-rays. In our case the luxation was irresponsible in general anaesthesia and had to be succeeded by open reposition with temporary pin-fixation. Postoperatively a cast up to the upper arm is necessary for six weeks. With the removal of the plaster the wire pins also must be immediately withdrawn, as to evade complications like fatigue-breakage of the implanted material. With adherence to this therapeutic sch

Transarterial embolization in musculoskeletal care: an indication-stratified narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Transarterial embolization (TAE) is increasingly used across a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions, ranging from established hemostatic and tumor-related indications to emerging pain-directed procedures for degenerative joint disease and chronic inflammatory tendinopathies. Because these applications differ substantially in clinical maturity, methodological quality, durability of outcomes, and comparative evidence, an indication-stratified synthesis is needed. MAIN BODY: This narrative review summarizes technical principles, vascular anatomy considerations, embolic agent
