Anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency resulting from inadequate dietary intake is rare in children in the modern era because of improvements in nutritional status. However, such anemia can be caused by decreased ingestion or impaired absorption and/or utilization of vitamin B12. We report the case of an 18-year-old man with short stature, prepubertal sexual maturation, exertional dyspnea, and severe anemia with a hemoglobin level of 3.3 g/dL. He had a history of small bowel resection from 50 cm below the Treitz ligament to 5 cm above the ileocecal valve necessitated by midgut volvulus in the

Neonatal adrenal hemorrhage (NAH) is a rare condition that commonly presents with retroperitoneal bleeding in neonates. We report a term male neonate born through vaginal delivery who presented with respiratory distress and shock on the first day of his life. Examination revealed pallor, abdominal distension and a tender lumbar mass. Laboratory tests showed severe anemia, and imaging studies confirmed a large perirenal hematoma with absent adrenal shadow. The diagnosis was right adrenal rupture causing hemorrhagic shock. Prompt resuscitation and conservative management led to a favorable outco

A complete blood count (CBC) with differential is an essential laboratory test used to evaluate overall physiologic health and detect potential disorders in neonates. This test provides valuable insights into various blood cell types and structures and offers information on infections, immune status, anemia, and other hematologic conditions. Given the unique physiology and susceptibility of neonates to infections and other complications, interpreting the CBC with differential results in this population requires a specialized approach. The purpose of this article is to describe the components o

Red blood cell alloimmunization in pregnancy is a major cause of hemolytic disease of the fetus and neonate (HDFN), which can lead to fetal anemia, hydrops fetalis, and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The implementation of routine RhD prophylaxis has significantly reduced the incidence of RhD alloimmunization, especially in high-income countries. Management relies on maternal antibody screening, fetal antigen determination, and Doppler ultrasonography, with the middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity being the gold standard for identifying fetuses at high risk of moderate-to-severe an

INTRODUCTION: Compared with early cord clamping (ECC), delayed cord clamping (DCC) facilitates improved placental transfusion and increases blood volume in singleton pregnancies. However, evidence supporting the use of DCC in twins delivered by cesarean section is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of DCC versus ECC on both maternal and neonatal outcomes in twin pregnancies delivered through cesarean section.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study that included 280 twin pregnancies at ≥28 weeks that were delivered by cesarean section. A comparison of m

Treatment of severe anemia with intrauterine red cell transfusions in fetuses with red cell alloimmunization has led to a dramatic increase in perinatal survival. Due to this increased survival focus is nowadays shifting towards improving postnatal treatment options. Phototherapy, exchange transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulin are used to treat hyperbilirubinemia and prevent kernicterus. Postnatal treatment of anemia consists of top-up transfusions, supplements to support erythropoiesis such as folic acid and iron, and occasionally erythropoietin treatment. In addition to anemia, other h

OBJECTIVE: The prenatal course of a rare case with fetal anemia caused by maternal anti-c alloimmunization was reported.
CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old female with anti-c and anti-E antibodies against red cells had previously experienced a stillbirth. At her present pregnancy, titers of maternal antibodies and fetal middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA-PSV) were frequently monitored to investigate the severity of fetal hemolytic anemia. Rather than manifesting as an increase in MCA-PSV, the anemic fetus was delivered at 32 weeks and one day of gestation with a sole presentation: pol

INTRODUCTION: Inherited anemias diagnostic workup requires a step-wise algorithm. Causal genes implicated in congenital hemolytic anemia are numerous, making a gene-by-gene approach by Sanger sequencing time consuming, expensive and labour intensive. Targeted resequencing can be of great use in explaining these cases.
METHODOLOGY: Six months female presented with neonatal jaundice and negative family history. Clinical and laboratory evidences were suggestive of hemolytic anemia. G6PD deficiency, thalassemias, hemoglobinopathies, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hereditary spherocytosis and pyruva

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type II (CDA-II) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by anemia, jaundice, splenomegaly, and erythroblast multinuclearity. The natural history of the disease is unknown. The frequency, the relevance of complications, and the use of splenectomy are poorly defined. This study examined 98 patients from unrelated families enrolled in the International Registry of CDA-II. Retrospective data were obtained using an appropriate questionnaire. The mean age at presentation was 5.2 +/- 6.1 years. Anemia was present in 66% and jaundice in 53.4% of cases. The

OBJECTIVE: Placenta previa is one of the causes of neonatal anemia. This condition is mainly explained by antenatal hemorrhage and incision of the anteriorly located placenta during cesarean section. However, the mechanism of neonatal anemia in placenta previa has not been extensively studied or well elucidated. This study investigates whether placenta previa is associated with lower hematocrit levels in newborns with no antenatal hemorrhage and placental incision.
KEY FINDINGS: This prospective study investigated 47 patients with previa and 43 control patients who gave birth with a cesarean

Adrenal hemorrhage (AH) is a relatively uncommon condition in newborns. It may be asymptomatic or may present with flank abdominal mass, anemia, jaundice, or rarely as scrotal bruising or hematoma. We report two cases of AH in neonates; the first presented with scrotal hematoma and the second with adrenal mass associated with hypertension and oliguria, primarily secondary to coincidental renal vein thrombosis. Diagnosis was confirmed by abdominal ultrasound. Patients were managed conservatively with clinical observation and by following hemoglobin and bilirubin levels closely. Both infants wer

Prevention of malaria in pregnant women is an utmost priority because the disease can cause serious maternal and neonatal complications. Maternal complications include marked anemia, increased risk of severe disease, and mortality, while the fetus or neonate is at risk of prematurity, anemia, and low birthweight. Pregnant women living in malaria endemic areas may be semiimmune to a particular Plasmodium spp. but when traveling to other regions, sometimes within their same country, where malaria epidemiology is different, may develop severe malaria complications. Here, we describe our experienc

OBJECTIVES: The treatment of late recognized alloimunization with intraumbilical transfusions is more difficult and more often connected with complications.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Between 1991-1997 we performed 70 intraumbilical transfusions in 25 fetuses for erythrocyte alloimunization. Six fetuses (24%) were hydropic in the beginning of the treatment. Eleven fetuses were delivered before 36 weeks of pregnancy. Two immature neonates (660 g and 1320 g) had intraventricular hemorrhage with neurologic complications. In six cases the transfusion was complicated by severe bradycardia of the fetus,

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) due to red cell alloimmunization, is an important cause of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, fetal and neonatal outcome of HDFN managed with intrauterine transfusion (IUT) in China are unknown. In addition, fetal and neonatal outcomes according to the type of maternal red cell alloantibodies involved and outcomes of hydrops fetalis are also unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate fetal and neonatal outcomes of severe red-cell alloimmunization treated by IUT, to compare the outcomes accord

Splenic rupture in neonates is a rare event, usually occurring in the setting of underlying predisposing conditions. Here, we present the case of a term neonate who presented with worsening anemia in the setting of known hemolytic disease during the newborn period and was later found to have a spontaneous splenic rupture. He was subsequently diagnosed with severe hemophilia A, and was managed medically with recombinant factor VIII replacement therapy without any surgical intervention. This is the first reported case of a neonate who had spontaneous splenic rupture and severe hemophilia A, and
