Infanticide and infant-directed aggression are recognized behaviors in non-human primates and can occasionally lead to severe neonatal trauma. This report describes the successful management of a life-threatening anorectal and sacro-coccygeal injury in a neonatal Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) following an aggressive encounter with an adult male. The neonate presented in critical condition with profuse hemorrhage, sacro-coccygeal dislocation, and extensive damage to the perineal and anorectal tissues, resulting in hypovolemia and hemodynamic instability. After initial stabilization, emerge

INTRODUCTION: Stenosis is a serious complication associated with stomas. The initial treatment for stoma stenosis is mainly the finger-bougie technique or balloon dilatation, and recurrence requires stomal reconstruction. However, the use of local triamcinolone injections for treating stoma stenosis has not been reported. Herein, we reported a case of repeated stoma stenosis in a high-risk patient in whom balloon dilatation combined with local triamcinolone injection effectively avoided stomal reconstruction.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A woman in her 70s was admitted to our hospital with the chief

Background Colonic duplication may present in different anatomic variants. The surgical approach towards these anomalies can be challenging and has implications for subsequent future continence. Case Description We report on a 1-year-old girl with congenital heart defect and pacemaker who was referred to us with an anorectal malformation. The patient was stooling from both an anus and a perineal fistula. Examination under anesthesia revealed an orthotopic and age-appropriate sized anus with surrounding sphincter and a second rectal lumen ending as a perineal fistula. A computed tomography and

PURPOSE: Radiation proctitis is a known complication following radiation therapy for pelvic malignancy. The majority of cases are treated nonsurgically. Rectal instillation of formalin solution has been described as a successful treatment for chronic radiation-induced hemorrhagic proctitis resistant to medical treatment. We present our results in patients undergoing treatment with application of 4 % formalin for radiation-induced injury to the rectum.
METHODS: All patients were treated under anesthesia by direct application of 4 % formalin solution to the affected rectal areas. Patient gender

Isoflurane protects the blood-brain barrier (BBB) against cerebral extravasation of Evans blue dye (EBD), a commonly used serum protein tracer, in animals subjected to BBB disruption. As such, it has been implicated as a therapeutic agent that can prevent brain edema and damage caused by a number of brain insults, including focal ischemia and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Recently, it has been shown that isoflurane inhibits the cerebral extravasation of EBD following ischemic stroke chiefly by inducing hypothermia, raising the intriguing possibility that isoflurane protected against other causes of

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two anesthetic induction protocols for long procedures carried out in the field in Tapiridae. Sixteen tapirs were divided into two groups (n=8) receiving either detomidine (DET) or dexmedetomidine (DEX) for anesthetic induction. All animals were anesthetized by intramuscular administration of a combination of ketamine (1.5 mg/kg), midazolam (0.2 mg/kg), plus either DET (0.04 mg/kg) or DEX (0.007 mg/kg). Anesthetic maintenance was by continuous infusion of ketamine, midazolam, and glyceryl guaiacol ether at 2 mg/kg per hour, 0.1 mg/kg per hour

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Werdnig-Hoffmann disease is the most common cause of hypotonia in infants and its prognosis is worse if it is present shortly after delivery. Symmetrical muscular weakness, areflexia, and fasciculations of the tongue are characteristic. The majority of the infants die before two years of age as a consequence of respiratory failure. The present report presents a case in which total intravenous anesthesia was used.
CASE REPORT: This is a 1 year old white female weighing 10 kg, physical status ASA III, with Werdnig-Hoffmann disease diagnosed at two months of age. The p

BACKGROUND: Rectal carcinoma (RC) treatment primarily involves laparoscopic surgery, which may induce significant hemodynamic changes and weaken immune function. Certain anesthetic approaches using opioid drugs (including remifentanil and sufentanil) pose risks, such as hypotension.
AIM: To determine the effects of remifentanil combined with propofol on hemodynamics and oxidative stress in patients undergoing RC resection.
METHODS: A total of 211 patients one hundred and four patients with RC treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University between November 2018 and Nove

Transurethral microwave thermotherapy of the prostate has been touted as a minimally invasive means of treating symptomatic prostatism. High temperatures (>55 degrees C) appear to yield improved results but require general anesthesia. To determine if high temperature thermotherapy of the prostate was feasible in an outpatient, nonanesthetic setting, we subjected men with symptomatic prostatism secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia to treatment with a newly developed circumferentially cooled transurethral microwave thermotherapy device, the UroWave. Intraprostatic temperatures were measured

PURPOSE: Traditionally, the care of children and adults has been arbitrarily separated into pediatric and adult medicine and surgery. Despite progress in pediatric surgical techniques, patients born with congenital anomalies still suffer from significant functional sequelae, which persist into adulthood. We aim to describe some of the most common problems experienced by adult patients with congenital colorectal malformations.
METHODS: Following IRB approval, we performed a retrospective database review of all adult patients who were treated by our group from 1983 until 2017.
RESULTS: We iden

A 70-year-old man with Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) underwent laparoscopic rectopexy under general anesthesia. For anesthetic induction, we administered total 0.6 mg · kg-1 of rocuronium with titration. Eight minutes later, train-of-four (TOF) count reached to 0 and the patient was intubated smoothly. One hundred and five minutes later, TOF ratio recovered to 100% and we administered rocuronium 10 mg additionally. Surgery was finished without any problems 95 minutes after thereafter. TOF ratio was 45% and we administered sugammadex 3 mg · kg-1, reversing neuromuscular blockade to TOF ratio

Up to 79% of patients with anorectal malformations (ARMs) experience constipation and/or soiling after a primary posterior sagittal anoplasty (PSARP) and are referred to a bowel management program. We aim to report the recent updates in evaluating and managing these patients as part of the manuscript series on the current bowel management protocols for patients with colorectal diseases (ARMs, Hirschsprung disease, functional constipation, and spinal anomalies). The unique anatomic features of ARM patients, such as maldeveloped sphincter complex, impaired anal sensation, and associated spine an

We present a case of acute cauda equina syndrome caused by an epidural steroid injection in the setting of a previously undiagnosed spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF). Our patient was a 61-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with low back pain, inability to walk, paresthesias of his bilateral lower extremities, bowel and bladder incontinence, and saddle anesthesia. Physical examination revealed weakness and decreased sensation of the lower extremities as well as poor rectal tone and urinary retention. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed evidence of spinal cord
