Disruption of Gap Junction-Mediated Intercellular Communication in the Spiral Ligament Causes Hearing and Outer Hair Cell Loss in the Cochlea of Mice.

It is well-known that outer hair cell (OHC) loss occurs in the cochlea of animal models of permanent hearing loss induced by intense noise exposure. Our earlier studies demonstrated the production of hydroxynonenal and peroxynitrite, as well as the disruption of gap junction-mediated intercellular communication (GJIC), in the cochlear spiral ligament prior to noise-induced sudden hearing loss. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the mechanism underlying cochlear OHC loss after sudden hearing loss induced by intense noise exposure. In organ of Corti explant cultures from mice, no sign

Interactional leader-follower sensorimotor communication strategies during repetitive joint actions.

Non-verbal communication is the basis of animal interactions. In dyadic leader-follower interactions, leaders master the ability to carve their motor behaviour in order to 'signal' their future actions and internal plans while these signals influence the behaviour of follower partners, who automatically tend to imitate the leader even in complementary interactions. Despite their usefulness, signalling and imitation have a biomechanical cost, and it is unclear how this cost-benefits trade-off is managed during repetitive dyadic interactions that present learnable regularities. We studied signal

Alteration of antral and proximal colonic motility induced by chronic psychological stress involves central urocortin 3 and vasopressin in rats.

Because of the difficulties in developing suitable animal models, the pathogenesis of stress-induced functional gastrointestinal disorders is not well known. Here we applied the communication box technique to induce psychological stress in rats and then examined their gastrointestinal motility. We measured upper and lower gastrointestinal motility induced by acute and chronic psychological stress and examined the mRNA expression of various neuropeptides in the hypothalamus. Chronic psychological stress disrupted the fasted motility in the antrum and accelerated motility in the proximal colon.

Physiological Adaptations and Thermoregulatory Indicators of Heat Stress in Bovine Production Systems.

Heat stress is a major challenge for cattle production systems because it negatively affects animal welfare, health, productivity, and reproductive performance. This communication reviews the main physiological adaptations and thermoregulatory indicators associated with heat stress in cattle and illustrates their practical application under tropical conditions. Environmental and physiological measurements were evaluated in fifty adult Bos indicus cows in Tabasco, Mexico. Ambient temperature was recorded using black globe and dry-bulb thermometers under different environmental conditions, while

Strengthening One Health: Global Applications of the Joint Risk Assessment Operational Tool.

Risk assessment is critical for managing health threats at the human-animal-environment interface, yet sector-specific approaches can result in fragmented actions. To address this gap, the Joint Risk Assessment Operational Tool (JRA OT), an operational tool of the Tripartite Zoonoses Guide, was developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the World Organization for Animal Health. The JRA OT provides a structured framework for joint qualitative risk assessments that integrate multisectoral expertise to identify risk pathways, asses

Ocular manifestations in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represents a neurodevelopmental disorder that has been the focus of numerous studies on the central nervous system (CNS). The embryological origin of the brain and retina is shared, with the axons of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) developing into the optic nerves that enter the brain through the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus, LGN, and other visual cortices. Given the evidence that individuals with ASD exhibit impairments in the visual mechanisms, including deficits in emotional face recognition, and difficulty in maintaining gaze control a

[Autism spectrum disorders--recent advances in the research on the impairment in social communication].

Since the discovery of early infantile autism (1943), the etiology of the disease has for long been a matter of dispute-from a form of innate schizophrenia, maltreatment by 'refrigerator mother', to dysfunction of speech development. After the re-discovery of Asperger syndrome by Wing (1981), the concept of this diverse syndrome complex has merged to pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) or autism spectrum disorders (ASD). People suffering from Asperger syndrome do not show impairments in speech development, in fact, they have good linguistic abilities. They can explain their own psychopatho

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and public fomites: a review.

Staphylococcus genus is a Gram-positive coccus normally associated with skin and mucous membranes of warm-blooded animals. It is part of the commensal human microflora, or found in animals, or contaminating surfaces in the community and hospital settings. Staphylococcus aureus is the most pathogenic species belonging to this genus, as it possesses a collection of virulence factors that are expressed solely to evade the immune system. The increase in the misuse of antimicrobial agents predisposed S. aureus to develop antibiotic resistance, including the resistance to methicillin which led to th

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Pakistan, 2022: A warning bell amidst unprecedented floods and COVID 19 pandemic.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an infection caused by a tick-borne virus (genus: Nairovirus, family: Bunyaviridae). The most important vector for CCHF is the ixodid tick. Along with tick bite, direct contact with the virus-affected animal is responsible for its spread. Pakistan witnessed its first case of CCHF in 1976 and has been a major victim of CCHF for years, but spikes in cases are seen after Eid-ul-Adha, an Islamic festival involving the sacrifice of cattle. The disease, in particular, is common among butchers, veterinarians, and livestock workers. From the start of this year

Evidence for the involvement of genetic variation in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) in the etiology of autistic disorders on high-functioning level.

An increasing number of animal studies advert to a substantial role of the neuropeptide oxytocin in the regulation of social attachment and affiliation. Furthermore, animal studies showed anxiety and stress-reduced effects of oxytocin. First human studies confirm these findings in animal studies and implicate a crucial role of oxytocin in human social attachment behavior and in social interactions. Thus, the oxytocin system might be involved in the impairment of social interaction and attachment in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The human oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) represents a plausible

Label-Free Detection of African Swine Fever and Classical Swine Fever in the Point-of-Care Setting Using Photonic Integrated Circuits Integrated in a Microfluidic Device.

Swine viral diseases have the capacity to cause significant losses and affect the sector's sustainability, a situation further exacerbated by the lack of antiviral drugs and the limited availability of effective vaccines. In this context, a novel point-of-care (POC) diagnostic device incorporating photonic integrated circuits (PICs), microfluidics and information, and communication technology into a single platform was developed for the field diagnosis of African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF). The device targets viral particles and has been validated using oral fluid and se

Preclinical Marmoset Model for Targeting Chronic Inflammation as a Strategy to Prevent Alzheimer's Disease.

Due to the aging population, modern society is facing an increasing prevalence of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is an age-related chronic neurodegenerative disorder for which no satisfying therapy exists. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the onset of AD is necessary to find targets for protective treatment. There is growing awareness of the essential role of the immune system in the early AD pathology. Amyloidopathy, the main feature of early-stage AD, has a deregulating effect on the immune function. This is reciprocal as the immune system also affects amyl

Electroacupuncture therapy in inflammation regulation: current perspectives.

Although acupuncture therapy is increasingly used to treat diverse symptoms and disorders in humans, its underlying mechanism is not known well. Only recently have experimental studies begun to provide insights into how acupuncture stimulation generates and relates to pathophysiological responsiveness. Acupuncture intervention is frequently used to control pathologic symptoms in several visceral organs, and a growing number of studies using experimental animal models suggest that acupuncture stimulation may be involved in inducing anti-inflammatory responses. The vagus nerve, a principal paras

Intraperitoneal versus extraperitoneal insufflation of carbon dioxide as for laparoscopy.

In order to compare the effects of intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal insufflation of CO2, we obtained blood gas measurements and chest radiographs in dogs during insufflation into three sites: the peritoneal cavity alone, the retroperitoneal space with communication into the peritoneal cavity, and the retroperitoneal space alone. The blood pH fell a mean of 0.11 +/- 0.03 and the PaCO2 rose a mean of 16.0 +/- 3.7 mm Hg when insufflation included the peritoneal cavity, whereas when insufflation was limited to the retroperitoneum, the pH fell a mean of 0.05 +/- 0.03 and the PaCO2 rose a mean of
