Using Equivalence-Based Instruction to Teach Value-Congruent Action Identification to Autistic Teens.

Brucellosis is an infectious zoonotic disease. The disease is one of the major concerns in developing societies due to its great importance for public health and economic losses in the animal industry. The principal target of the study was to detect the prevalence of brucellosis and associated risk factors in cattle from Hamedan (western Iran) using different laboratory techniques. In 2020, blood samples from 900 cattle were obtained to detect brucellosis prevalence in the region. After screening by the modified Rose Bengal plate test, the positive samples were reevaluated using the Wright sta

Effect of zoledronic acid in an L6-L7 rabbit spine fusion model.

Previous studies have shown that zoledronic acid administration can increase mineral content and strength in distraction osteogenesis. Of the few studies that have examined the use of bisphosphonates in spinal arthrodesis, none have assessed the effect of single dose treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of enhancing spinal fusion rate using single dose zoledronic acid (ZA) to increase fusion-mass size and mineral density. Forty-eight New Zealand white rabbits underwent an L6-L7 intertransverse process fusion. The L6-L7 model is more challenging than the more c

Deleterious Effect of Crossfostering in Rat Pups on Hypoxic-Ischaemic Injury Tolerance and Hypothermic Neuroprotection.

We study the effect of hypothermia (HT) following hypoxic-ischaemic (HI) brain injury in postnatal day 7 (P7) rats. In 2015, new European Union animal transport regulations prompted a change in practice at the breeding facility, which henceforth crossfostered P3 litters to P8 older lactating dams prior to transportation. It is generally assumed that crossfostering does not significantly affect the experimental results. The aim of this study was to examine whether crossfostering affects our model consistency by modifying injury susceptibility and hypothermic neuroprotection. We analysed 219 pup

Canine-Based Strategies for Prevention and Control of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis found worldwide. Its incidence has increased in Brazil in recent years, representing a serious public and animal health problem. The strategies applied in Brazil are questionable and are not sufficient to control the disease. Thus, we have compared the efficacy of some of the currently available strategies focused on dogs to prevent and control zoonotic VL in endemic areas by optimizing a mathematical model. The simulations showed that the elimination of seropositive dogs, the use of insecticide-impregnated dog collars, and the vaccination of dogs sign

Late-gestation heat stress impairs daughter and granddaughter lifetime performance.

Records of late-gestation heat stress studies conducted over 10 consecutive years in Florida were pooled and analyzed to test the hypothesis that maternal hyperthermia during late gestation impairs performance of the offspring across multiple generations and lactations, ultimately impeding the profitability of the US dairy sector. Dry-pregnant multiparous dams were actively cooled (CL; shade of a freestall barn, fans and water soakers, n = 196) or not (HT; shade only, n = 198) during the last 46 d of gestation, concurrent with the entire dry period. After data mining, records of 156 daughters

A behavioral and neuroanatomical investigation of the lethality caused by gestational day 11-13 retinoic acid exposure.

In a companion article, we report that there is a sensitive period for all-trans retinoic acid (RA) lethality on gestational days (GD) 11-13. When dams were given 10 mg/kg RA daily for 3 consecutive days on GD 11-13, a number of pups were found dead in the home cage on the day of birth, and the remainder inevitably died due to an apparent inability to nurse. Here we report a set of experiments further investigating these effects. Dams were exposed PO to 10 mg/kg RA or oil vehicle on GD 11-13. Fetuses were removed by Cesarean section on the afternoon of GD 21, culled, and fostered to non-treate

Study on supplemental test to improve the detection of bovine tuberculosis in individual animals and herds.

BACKGROUND: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), is a worldwide disease caused by Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis). The success of bTB eradication and control programs is based on early detection and the removal of reactors from a herd thus routine testing and cull strategy have been applied globally. Since the late nineteenth century, the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) has been the primary antemortem test available to support bTB eradication campaigns. Due to the TST limitations in terms of Se and Sp, the credibility of the diagnosis is frequently questioned given the occurrence of false-positive and false-n

Intention of dog owners to participate in rabies control measures in Flores Island, Indonesia.

The success of a rabies control strategy depends on the commitment and collaboration of dog owners. In this study the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used to identify the factors, which are associated with the intention of dog owners to participate in rabies control measures in the Manggarai and Sikka regencies of Flores Island, Indonesia. Questionnaires were administered to 450 dog owners from 44 randomly selected villages in the two regencies. Ninety-six percent of the dog owners intended to participate in a free-of-charge vaccination campaign. The intention decreased to 24% when dog o

From the One Health Perspective: Schistosomiasis Japonica and Flooding.

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease distributed worldwide, while schistosomiasis japonica localizes in the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, and a few regions of Indonesia. Although significant achievements have been obtained in these endemic countries, great challenges still exist to reach the elimination of schistosomiasis japonica, as the occurrence of flooding can lead to several adverse consequences on the prevalence of schistosomiasis. This review summarizes the influence of flooding on the transmission of schistosomiasis japonica and interventions responding to

Differential expression of microRNAs in the caecal content and faeces of broiler chickens experimentally infected with Eimeria.

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria spp. incurs significant morbidity and mortality in chickens, and is thus of great economic importance. Post-mortem intestinal lesion scoring remains one of the most common means of diagnosis; therefore alternative, non-invasive methods of diagnosis and monitoring would be highly desirable. Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to be stable in faeces of human and animal species with expression altered in gastrointestinal disease. We hypothesized that miRNA is stable in caecal content of chickens, and that differential miRNA expression patterns would be seen in Eimeri

Cultural Practices Shaping Zoonotic Diseases Surveillance: The Case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Thailand Native Chicken Farmers.

Effectiveness of current passive zoonotic disease surveillance systems is limited by the under-reporting of disease outbreaks in the domestic animal population. Evaluating the acceptability of passive surveillance and its economic, social and cultural determinants appears a critical step for improving it. A participatory rural appraisal was implemented in a rural subdistrict of Thailand. Focus group interviews were used to identify sanitary risks perceived by native chicken farmers and describe the structure of their value chain. Qualitative individual interviews with a large diversity of acto

Transmission dynamics and economics of rabies control in dogs and humans in an African city.

Human rabies in developing countries can be prevented through interventions directed at dogs. Potential cost-savings for the public health sector of interventions aimed at animal-host reservoirs should be assessed. Available deterministic models of rabies transmission between dogs were extended to include dog-to-human rabies transmission. Model parameters were fitted to routine weekly rabid-dog and exposed-human cases reported in N'Djaména, the capital of Chad. The estimated transmission rates between dogs (beta(d)) were 0.0807 km2/(dogs x week) and between dogs and humans (beta(dh)) 0.0002 km

Metformin is associated with the suppression of the TNF-α/iNOS/TIMP-1 axis-mediated liver injury and fibrosis secondary to diabetes.

Excessive production of nitric oxide by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) contributes to liver injury. Diabetes can lead to liver injury and fibrosis, through episodes of nitrosative stress, driven by activation of the inflammation/iNOS pathway. In this study, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was induced in rats while another group started the treatment with the antidiabetic drug metformin (200 mg/kg) starting two weeks prior to diabetes induction and continuing until the animals were culled at week 12. Liver injury secondary to T2DM was confirmed 10 weeks after the induction of hyperglyce

Helminth Fauna of Wild Boars (Sus scrofa): A Coprological Survey from Southern Italy.

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations have increased worldwide, causing sanitary and environmental concerns. These ungulates can harbor a wide range of pathogens that should be carefully monitored due to the zoonotic potential and risk of transmission to domestic pigs. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and distribution of helminth infections among wild boars in southern Italy and to explore associated risk factors for infections. A total of 369 wild boars were culled during one hunting season in four hunting districts in the Campania region, and individual fecal egg counts were performed

Economic Impact of Abortions in Dairy Cow Herds.

This study aimed to explore Markov decision methods in order to solve the problem of dairy cow replacement, adding the special characteristics of two types of abortions due to different sanitary reasons that influence the economic, production, and reproduction performance of these animals. The model was successfully validated against other models published in the literature. Python code v.3.13 was used to solve the problem and to ease future extensions with the inclusion of new variables. The results constitute tools that allow the veterinarian to explore more realistic scenarios by running a

Host factor RBMX2 promotes epithelial cell apoptosis by downregulating APAF-1's Retention Intron after Mycobacterium bovis infection.

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis variant bovis (M. bovis) is a highly pathogenic environmental microorganism that causes bovine tuberculosis (bTB), a significant zoonotic disease. Currently, "test and culling" is the primary measure for controlling bTB, but it has been proven to be inadequate in animals due to their high susceptibility to the pathogen. Selective breeding for increased host resistance to bTB to reduce its prevalence is feasible. In this study, we found a vital host-dependent factor, RBMX2, that can potentially promote M. bovis infection. By knocking RBMX2 out, we investigated its

Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex DNA in oronasal swabs from infected African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer).

Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), a member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), is the causative agent of bovine TB (bTB) in animals. Spread occurs through inhalation or ingestion of bacilli transmitted from infected individuals. Early and accurate detection of infected African buffaloes shedding M. bovis is essential for interrupting transmission. In this pilot study, we determined if MTBC DNA could be detected in M. bovis infected buffalo oronasal secretions using a molecular transport media (PrimeStore MTM) with oronasal swabs and a rapid qPCR assay (Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra). Bovine
