Amitraz is an acaricide and insecticide used to treat ticks, which infest domestic animals in developing countries. Because of its widespread use, it is one of the common poisons unintentionally consumed by infants and children when left unsupervised. A 3-year-old boy was brought with unintentional consumption of Amitraz. On examination, he was found to be progressively drowsy, with an irregular pulse, bradycardia, and hypotension. He was treated with atropine, intravenous fluids, and dopamine infusion; hemodynamic stability was achieved within 36 hours after ingestion. Amitraz is an unusual b

INTRODUCTION: This is the 42nd Annual Report of America's Poison Centers® National Poison Data System®. As of 1 January, 2024, all 55 of the nation's Poison Centers uploaded case data automatically to NPDS.
METHODS: We analyzed the case data, tabulating specific indices from the NPDS. The methodology was as in previous years. Where changes were introduced, the differences are identified. Cases with medical outcomes of death were evaluated by a team of medical and clinical toxicologists using an ordinal scale of 1-6 to assess the Relative Contribution to Fatality of the exposure.
RESULTS: In

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are commonly used to control rodent populations and frequently involved in wildlife and domestic animal poisoning. These poisoning cases (especially for ARs) are a challenge for forensic toxicologists, and adequate post-mortem examination and toxicological analyses become essential for a proper diagnosis. Publications describing different analytical methods for AR analysis in biological samples are growing, and a clear compilation of the overall picture is needed to standardize methodologies in future research. This review aims to compile and compare the analyt

The present study describes the spontaneous and experimental poisoning of goats by Festuca argentina in Argentine Patagonia. In April 2017, eight seven-month-old Creole male goats were accidentally introduced into a paddock that contained F. argentina. After four days, two of the goats were found dead and four out of the six remaining goats were clinically affected. Two of the latter had to be later euthanized in extremis. The main clinical signs were progressive nervous signs, starting with moderate muscle tremors, wide-based stance and ataxia. Postmortem examination was performed on the two

Antivenoms are preparations of intact or fragmented (F(ab')2 or Fab) immunoglobulin G (IgG) used in human medicine to treat the severe envenomings resulting from the bites and stings of various animals, such as snakes, spiders, scorpions, or marine animals, or from the contact with poisonous plants. They are obtained by fractionating plasma collected from immunized horses or, less frequently, sheep. Manufacturing processes usually include pepsin digestion at acid pH, papain digestion, ammonium sulphate precipitation, caprylic acid precipitation, heat coagulation and/or chromatography. Most pro

The effects of verapamil and naloxone as potential antidotes for amitriptyline-induced cardiotoxicity were investigated in an experimental rat model. Amitriptyline was infused continuously at a dose of 37.5 mg/kg/h. After 15 minutes, the animals were given either naloxone (2 mg/kg + 3 mg/kg/h), verapamil (0.08 mg/kg + 0.08 mg/kg/h), or physiological saline. In the group given naloxone, a significant decrease in heart rate was seen. Although MAP and max dP/dT increased, there was no significant difference from controls. Naloxone did not decrease mortality. When the bolus dose of verapamil was g

BACKGROUND: Poisoning occurs when a person is exposed to an external substance at a too high dose for them. It is possible for young children to be exposed to chemicals. Lungs, the heart, CNS, the digestive tract, and kidneys can be poisoned. In 2004, over 45,000 children and teenagers died from acute poisoning, representing 13% of all accidental poisoning deaths worldwide. Poisoning patterns vary by exposure type, age group, poison type, and dose.
AIM: This study assessed the pattern of acute poisoning with drugs, chemicals, and natural toxins among children (<12 years old). The study was do

Boric acid (H3BO3) has been used in a wide variety of applications--medication, pesticides, and household products. Reports of child poisoning by H3BO3 were common in the clinical literature before 1975. However, a decline in its use as a bacteriostatic agent coupled with increased regulatory control has almost eliminated poisonings by accidental ingestion. Schedule I (Part I, Item 8) of the Hazardous Products Act of Canada, proclaimed in the late 1960s, followed in the wake of concerns about accidental poisoning and prohibits its use in toys. Since that time, scientific knowledge has increase

CONTEXT: Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an organic compound found in household products but also as an adulterant in medicines by acting as a counterfeit solvent. DEG poisonings have been characterized predominately by acute kidney injury (AKI), but also by delayed neurological sequelae such as decreased reflexes or face and limb weakness.
OBJECTIVES: Characterizing the neurological symptoms of DEG poisoning in a subacute animal model would create a clearer picture of overall toxicity and possibly make mechanistic connections between kidney injury and neuropathy.
METHODS: Male Wistar-Han rats we

The properties of pyriminyl (N-3-pyridylmethyl-N'-p-nitrophenyl urea) as a rodenticide against the lesser bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) in Rangoon, Burma, were investigated in the laboratory. The acute LD 50 and LD 95 dose of orally administered pyriminyl for B. bengalensis were found to be 6.7 mg/kg and 23.0 mg/kg of body weight respectively. When caged bandicoots were given a choice between plain and poisoned baits, the optimum rodenticidal concentration in the bait was found to be 0.25-0.5%. Symptoms of pyriminyl poisoning appear from 1 to 4 h after feeding starts, giving individual

Industrial processes result in the production of heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceuticals, micropollutants, and PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated substances). Heavy metals are currently a significant problem in drinking water and other natural water bodies, including soil, which has an adverse impact on the environment as a whole. The heavy metal is highly poisonous, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic to humans as well as other animals. Multiple polluted sites, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, have been observed to co-occur with heavy me

Several species of dangerous snakes are found in Iran and, according to the Emergency Response Center of Iran from 2002 to 2011, 53,787 Iranians have suffered from snakebite. Although the mortalities caused by snakebite are very low, snakebite-related amputations are still a major concern. Currently, anti-venom polyclonal antibodies derived from animals, such as horses are used to treat snakebites; however, in some cases they can cause anaphylactic shock and serum sickness. In line with this premise, generation of recombinant anti-venom antibodies can be considered as an alternative strategy.

Deltamethrin (DLM) is a synthesized organophosphorus acaricide and bug spray, broadly utilized for veterinary and farming purposes. Although its exposure to humans and animals causes toxicity in the kidney and other primary organs, our objective was to assess the defensive effects of sitagliptin (Sita) and additionally curcumin (Cur) in the DLM-intoxicated rats' kidney. DLM-intoxicated rats revealed a huge increase of various biochemical parameters in serum identified with kidney damage: uric acid, urea, and creatinine. DLM intoxication altogether increased renal lipid peroxidation, and critic

Epsilon toxin (ET), produced by Clostridium perfringens types B and D, ranks among the four most potent poisonous substances known so far. ET-intoxication is responsible for enterotoxaemia in animals, mainly sheep and goats. This disease comprises several manifestations indicating the attack of the nervous system. This review aims to summarize the effects of ET on central nervous system. ET binds to endothelial cells of brain capillary vessels before passing through the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, it induces perivascular oedema and accumulates into brain. ET binding to different brain stru
