Association of Dementia With Total Ankle Arthroplasty and Ankle Arthrodesis Outcomes: A Short Report.

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle surgeons evaluate older patients with ankle arthritis and dementia. In this report, we analyzed postoperative complications following ankle arthrodesis (AA) and total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), hypothesizing greater risk in patients with dementia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Medicare claims from 2016 to 2021, including beneficiaries aged ≥65 years who underwent TAA or AA. The primary independent variable was dementia, defined using the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) dementia component based on International Classification of Diseases, T

Ankle cartilage health and physical activity in adults with a history of lateral ankle sprain.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is a common injury with long-term consequences, including joint degeneration and behavioral adaptations. OBJECTIVE: This study compares talar cartilage measures, physical activity, and injury-related fear between young and middle-aged adults with and without a history of LAS. METHODS: Forty adults were categorized into four groups: young ankle sprain (YAS), young control (YC), middle-aged ankle sprain (MAS), and middle-aged control (MC). Talar cartilage cross-sectional area (CSA), echointensity (EI), and echogenicity (EG) were measured using ultrasoun

Addressing varus and valgus deformity of the ankle: Algorithmic approach to total ankle arthroplasty.

Total ankle replacements have become increasingly popular, providing a viable alternative to ankle arthrodesis in patients with end stage ankle arthritis. Continued advancements in implant design have substantially improved long term survival outcomes as well as patient pain relief, range of motion, and quality of life. Surgeons continue to advance the indications for implantation of total ankle replacements in patients with more severe varus and valgus coronal plane deformity. This report of twelve cases demonstrates our algorithmic approach to total ankle arthroplasty in patients with deform

Prevalence of radiographic ankle osteoarthritis in different subgroups of patients referred for ankle radiography.

BACKGROUND: Ankle osteoarthritis(OA) has detrimental effects on physical health and has a relatively early disease onset compared to OA in other joints. However, the prevalence of radiographic ankle OA in different subgroups of patients referred for ankle radiography remains unknown. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence of radiographic talocrural, subtalar and talonavicular OA(Kellgren-Lawrence scale ≥2) in a population referred for ankle radiography. Moreover, we aimed to identify differences in prevalence between specific subgroups of patients i.e. Body Mass Index (BMI), sex, age

Individual differences in intrinsic ankle stiffness and their relationship to body sway and ankle torque.

When standing, intrinsic ankle stiffness is smaller when measured using large perturbations, when sway size is large, and when background torque is low. However, there is a large variation in individual intrinsic ankle stiffness. Here we determine if individual variation has consequences for postural control. We examined the relationship between ankle stiffness, ankle torque and body sway across different individuals. Ankle stiffness was estimated in 19 standing participants by measuring torque responses to small, brief perturbations. Perturbation sizes of 0.2 & 0.9 degrees (both lasting 140 m

Biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the ankle muscles in men with previous history of ankle sprain.

In this study, we aimed to explore the impact of previous history of lateral ankle sprain on the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PL) and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) and medialis (GM) in asymptomatic men. For this purpose, a group of 26 men with previous history of lateral ankle sprain (ASG) and a control group (CG) of 29 healthy counter-parts participated in this study. Tone, stiffness, elasticity and mechanical stress relaxation time were measured using a myotonometer in a single session. Higher tone was noted for TA and GL in ASG as com

Differences in Ankle ROM Between Young Men and Women With a History of Ankle Sprain.

BACKGROUND: Ankle injuries are the most common injuries in sports. However, very little is known about sex differences in ankle range of motion (ROM) between ankle joints with an episode of ankle sprain (ASE) and those without an episode of ankle sprain (non-ASE). This study aimed to investigate the differences of ankle ROM between men and women with and without ASE. METHODS: 26 ASE had at least one episode of ankle injury in the last 6 to 12 months. 35 non-ASE served as a control group. All subjects were examined in supine position and the ankle ROM was calculated by the sum of inversion (IV

The safety of the posterior ankle arthroscopy in management of posterior ankle impingement: A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic management of the posterior ankle impingement with the patient in supine position has the advantage of dealing with anterior ankle pathology at the same time without the need to change position of the patient. This study aims at evaluation of the safety of portal establishment and instrumentation of this technique. METHODS: Sixteen fresh-frozen cadaver specimens were used. The relationships of the posteromedial and posterolateral portals to the adjacent tendons and nerves and the relationship of the coaxial portal tract with the posterior ankle capsule and the flexor

Cutaneous innervation of the ankle: an anatomical study showing danger zones for ankle surgery.

Three nerves innervate the skin in the foot and ankle region: the saphenous, sural, and superficial peroneal nerves. Because they are close to the medial and lateral malleoli, these nerves are at significant risk during orthopedic interventions. The aims of this study were to investigate the distal courses of the three cutaneous nerves of the ankle and to determine their exact relationships with easily identifiable bony landmarks. Ten freshly frozen and 40 embalmed lower extremities of adults were dissected. The positions of the superficial peroneal, sural, and saphenous nerves were determined

Differences in kinematic control of ankle joint motions in people with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic ankle instability display different ankle joint motions compared to healthy people. The purpose of this study was to investigate the strategies used to control ankle joint motions between a group of people with chronic ankle instability and a group of healthy, matched controls. METHODS: Kinematic data were collected from 11 people with chronic ankle instability and 11 matched control subjects as they performed a single-leg land-and-cut maneuver. Three-dimensional ankle joint angles were calculated from 100 ms before, to 200 ms after landing. Kinematic control o
