Long-term impacts of rising sea temperature and sea level on shallow water coral communities over a ~40 year period.

Effects of combined rising sea temperature and increasing sea level on coral reefs, both factors associated with global warming, have rarely been addressed. In this ~40 y study of shallow reefs in the eastern Indian Ocean, we show that a rising relative sea level, currently estimated at ~11 mm y-1, has not only promoted coral cover but also has potential to limit damaging effects of thermally-induced bleaching. In 2010 the region experienced the most severe bleaching on record with corals subject to sea temperatures of >31 °C for 7 weeks. While the reef flats studied have a common aspect and a

Lobophorin K, a New Natural Product with Cytotoxic Activity Produced by Streptomyces sp. M-207 Associated with the Deep-Sea Coral Lophelia pertusa.

The present article describes the isolation of a new natural product of the lobophorin family, designated as lobophorin K (1), from cultures of the marine actinobacteria Streptomyces sp. M-207, previously isolated from the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa collected at 1800 m depth during an expedition to the submarine Avilés Canyon. Its structure was determined using a combination of spectroscopic techniques, mainly ESI-TOF MS and 1D and 2D NMR. This new natural product displayed cytotoxic activity against two human tumor cell lines, such as pancreatic carcinoma (MiaPaca-2) and breast adenoca

Shagenes A and B, new tricyclic sesquiterpenes produced by an undescribed Antarctic octocoral.

The isolation and characterization of two new tricyclic sesquiterpenoids, shagenes A (1) and B (2) are presented. These compounds were isolated from an undescribed soft coral collected from the Scotia Arc in the Southern Ocean. One- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry provided the data necessary to characterize the compounds and their relative stereochemical configurations. Exploration of the bioactivity of shagenes A and B found 1 active against the visceral leishmaniasis causing parasite, Leishmania donovani, with no cytotoxicity against the mammalian host.

Disturbance driven colony fragmentation as a driver of a coral disease outbreak.

In September of 2010, Brewer's Bay reef, located in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), was simultaneously affected by abnormally high temperatures and the passage of a hurricane that resulted in the mass bleaching and fragmentation of its coral community. An outbreak of a rapid tissue loss disease among coral colonies was associated with these two disturbances. Gross lesion signs and lesion progression rates indicated that the disease was most similar to the Caribbean coral disease white plague type 1. Experiments indicated that the disease was transmissible through direct contact between colon

Global gradients of coral exposure to environmental stresses and implications for local management.

BACKGROUND: The decline of coral reefs globally underscores the need for a spatial assessment of their exposure to multiple environmental stressors to estimate vulnerability and evaluate potential counter-measures. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study combined global spatial gradients of coral exposure to radiation stress factors (temperature, UV light and doldrums), stress-reinforcing factors (sedimentation and eutrophication), and stress-reducing factors (temperature variability and tidal amplitude) to produce a global map of coral exposure and identify areas where exposure depends on

Heterotrophy in tropical scleractinian corals.

The dual character of corals, that they are both auto- and heterotrophs, was recognized early in the twentieth Century. It is generally accepted that the symbiotic association between corals and their endosymbiotic algae (called zooxanthellae) is fundamental to the development of coral reefs in oligotrophic tropical oceans because zooxanthellae transfer the major part of their photosynthates to the coral host (autotrophic nutrition). However, numerous studies have confirmed that many species of corals are also active heterotrophs, ingesting organisms ranging from bacteria to mesozooplankton. H

Forecasting models to quantify three anthropogenic stresses on coral reefs from marine recreation: anchor damage, diver contact and copper emission from antifouling paint.

This research focuses on damage to coral reefs from three anthropogenic stresses: the dropping of anchors and their chains, human contact, and emission of copper from antifouling paints. Forecasting models are described that quantify degradation in terms of percentage of coral cover damaged/year or increasing levels of water toxicity/year. The models utilize a Monte Carlo simulation that applies a range of values or a probability distribution to each of the numerous uncertain variables. This model has the flexibility to adapt, and become more accurate, when users input assumptions specific to

Antioxidant efficiency of Sarcophyton crude extract against gentamicin toxicity in male albino rats.

Gentamicin is an antibiotic widely used in treating bacterial infections. However, it's clinical interest is limited by it's toxic side effects on vital organs. Sarcophyton soft coral is a source of natural products with a range of bioactivities. As such, the objective of this work was to assess how well Sarcophyton extract mitigated the gentamicin toxicity in rats. Four equal groups, each with five adult male albino rats, were randomly assigned: the control group, the Sarcophyton group given a Sarcophyton extract dose of 200 mg/kg/day orally for seven days, the gentamicin group receiving an i

Magnesium + coral hydroxyapatite/tannin dual-functional composite film for suppressing bone tumors and promoting ossification.

The management of post-resection osteolytic defects and prevention of tumor recurrence caused by residual malignant cells remain critical challenges in bone tumor therapy. There is an urgent need to develop bifunctional implants capable of simultaneous bone regeneration and tumor suppression. In this study, we synergistically combine pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and low-energy electron beam deposition (EBD) technologies to achieve precise construction and functional optimization of composite structures. Through this innovative integration, we successfully fabricate a bifunctional bilayer film

PhyloChip™ microarray comparison of sampling methods used for coral microbial ecology.

Interest in coral microbial ecology has been increasing steadily over the last decade, yet standardized methods of sample collection still have not been defined. Two methods were compared for their ability to sample coral-associated microbial communities: tissue punches and foam swabs, the latter being less invasive and preferred by reef managers. Four colonies of star coral, Montastraea annularis, were sampled in the Dry Tortugas National Park (two healthy and two with white plague disease). The PhyloChip™ G3 microarray was used to assess microbial community structure of amplified 16S rRNA ge

Hyperspectral and physiological analyses of coral-algal interactions.

Space limitation leads to competition between benthic, sessile organisms on coral reefs. As a primary example, reef-building corals are in direct contact with each other and many different species and functional groups of algae. Here we characterize interactions between three coral genera and three algal functional groups using a combination of hyperspectral imaging and oxygen microprofiling. We also performed in situ interaction transects to quantify the relative occurrence of these interaction on coral reefs. These studies were conducted in the Southern Line Islands, home to some of the most

Comparative genomics reveals modular virulence repertoires and extensive horizontal gene transfer in Vibrio species associated with white syndrome of Porites cylindrica.

Coral white syndrome (WS) is a widespread condition characterized by tissue loss and skeletal exposure, with multiple bacterial pathogens - particularly Vibrio species - implicated in its aetiology. To investigate the genomic basis of potential virulence in Vibrio associated with WS of Porites cylindrica, we isolated 57 Vibrio strains from healthy and diseased coral tissues collected from reefs in Guam. Thirteen representative strains from five dominant species - Vibrio coralliilyticus, Vibrio owensii, Vibrio tubiashii, Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio tetraodonis - were selected for whole-genome seq

A p-adic reaction-diffusion model of branching coral growth and calcification dynamics.

Coral colonies exhibit complex, self-similar branching architectures shaped by biochemical interactions and environmental constraints. To model their growth and calcification dynamics, we propose a novel reaction-diffusion framework defined over p -adic ultrametric spaces. The model incorporates biologically grounded reactions involving calcium and bicarbonate ions, whose interplay drives the precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Nonlocal diffusion is governed by the Vladimirov operator over the p -adic integers, naturally capturing the hierarchical geometry of branching coral structures

Revised empirical models for estimating coral pigment concentrations from optical reflectance spectra.

Spectral reflectance provides a potentially non-invasive approach to estimating coral pigments. We developed revised models using partial least-squares regression trained on paired reflectance and high-performance liquid chromatography pigment data from five coral species. Robust cross-validation yielded useful models for chlorophyll a, peridinin, diadinoxanthin, and β-carotene, though chlorophyll c2 and diatoxanthin performed poorly, likely from chromatographic or degradation issues. Target factor analysis confirmed all pigments were spectrally present. Applying the models to >4000 spectra fr

Species Diversity and Secondary Metabolites of Sarcophyton-Associated Marine Fungi.

Soft corals are widely distributed across the globe, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, with Sarcophyton being one of the most abundant genera. To date, there have been 50 species of identified Sarcophyton. These soft corals host a diverse range of marine fungi, which produce chemically diverse, bioactive secondary metabolites as part of their symbiotic nature with the soft coral hosts. The most prolific groups of compounds are terpenoids and indole alkaloids. Annually, there are more bio-active compounds being isolated and characterised. Thus, the importance of the metabolite compilation

High levels of methylmercury in guano and ornithogenic coral sand sediments on Xisha islands, South China sea.

This study determined the distribution and main source of methylmercury in ornithogenic coral sand sediments and pure guano collected from Guangjin and Jinqing islets of the South China Sea. Results showed that the levels of methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg), as well as the percentage of MeHg relative to THg (%MeHg), are high in both fresh and ancient guano samples. %MeHg in ancient guano exceeded 70 %, much greater than that in fresh seabird droppings (~45 %). These results suggest that excretion through feces likely plays an important role in the cycling of MeHg by seabirds. Guano

The Gastroprotective Effect of Hydrogen-Rich Coral Calcium in a Mouse Model of Peptic Ulcer Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD), including gastric and duodenal ulcers, is primarily caused by Helicobacter pylori infection and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, with additional contributors like stress, certain foods, and alcohol. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are effective but with adverse effects, prompting the exploration of alternative therapies. Hydrogen-rich coral calcium (HRCC) is a novel antioxidative agent that exerted anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities; however, the effects of HRCC on PUD were still obscure. METHODS: The gastroprotective effects of HRCC we
