PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the commonest nosocomial infection worldwide. Here we review the recent advances in the prevention of CAUTI.
RECENT FINDINGS: After more than 30 years, new guidelines were issued in 2008-2011 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee and European Association of Urology. These guidelines addressed novel technologies such as silver alloy or antimicrobial coatings on catheters, hydrophilic catheters, urethral sten

Diagnosis of a nonanatomic cause of urinary incontinence in a female patient depends on the examiner's powers of observation and willingness to listen and take a thorough history and perform a meticulous physical examination to identify symptoms that seem atypical of stress incontinence. In particular, the external genitalia, urethra, vagina, perineum, and lower extremities should be carefully examined. Also, thorough assessment of neurologic status is a must because abnormal neurologic function of the bladder is an absolute contraindication to surgery. Laboratory studies to rule out infection

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) pose a significant challenge in hospital settings. Current solutions available on the market involve incorporating antimicrobials and antiseptics into catheters. However, challenges such as uncontrolled release leading to undesirable toxicity, as well as the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance reduce the effectiveness of these solutions. Additionally, conventional antibiotics fail to effectively eradicate entrenched bacteria and metabolically suppressed bacteria present in the biofilm, necessitating the exploration of alternative strateg

Multidrug-resistant pathogens are the result of cumulative risk constellations and inappropriate antibiotic use. Multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are of particular relevance, especially in patients with prior antibiotic therapy, recurrent hospitalization, urinary drainage devices or a high density of invasive procedures. A central element of clinical management is the strict distinction between asymptomatic bacteriuria and clinically manifested urinary tract infections. Antimicrobial therapy is justified exclusively in the presence of a clinically manifested infection and, even in th

In the article, the authors review antibiotic treatment options for both acute uncomplicated UTI and complicated UTI. In addition, they review alternative regimens which are needed in the setting of drug-resistant pathogens including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, -extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E), carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, and carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas, which are encountered with more frequency.

BACKGROUND: Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTIs) are one of the most common community-acquired infections, particularly among women. Common symptoms of UTI include dysuria, urinary urgency and increased frequency, and lower abdominal pain. With appropriate treatment, symptoms may resolve in a few days. However, there is a lack of research on the emotional impact of this disease. We conducted a qualitative, interview-based study to gain a greater understanding of the emotional impact of uUTIs in women in China and Japan.
METHODS: A qualitative, exploratory, in-depth, interview-based

Antibiotic resistance of bacteria is causing clinical and public health concerns that are challenging to treat. Infections are becoming more common in the present era, and patients admitted to hospitals often have drug-resistant bacteria that can spread nosocomial infections. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases affecting all age groups. There has been an increase in the proportion of bacteria that are resistant to multiple drugs. Herein is a comprehensive update on UTI-associated diseases: cystitis, urethritis, acute urethral syndrome, pyelonephritis,

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are some of the most commonly encountered infections in clinical practice. Accurate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of UTIs will lead to better clinical care for many patients and limit unnecessary antibiotic use. Urinalysis and urine cultures are helpful tools in the diagnosis of UTIs; however, it is important to recognize their limitations. Differentiating between asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and true UTI is important because antibiotics are unnecessary in most nonpregnant patients with ASB and can even potentially cause harm if prescribed. Choice and

PURPOSE: Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common indications for antibiotic prescriptions in otherwise healthy women. We compared the risk of treatment failure of antibiotic regimens for outpatient treatment of UTI in real-world practice.
METHODS: We identified non-pregnant, premenopausal women diagnosed with uncomplicated, lower tract UTI and prescribed an oral antibiotic with activity against common uropathogens. We used propensity score-weighted Kaplan-Meier functions to estimate 30-day risks and risk differences (RD) for pyelonephritis and UTI-related

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI) is defined as the presence of pathogenic organisms in the urinary tract without anatomical and functional abnormalities, is accompanied by inflammatory leukocytes and cytokines and may or may not develop clinical symptoms. The frequency of uncomplicated urinary tract infection is higher in young women. Several quinolone treatment regimens are available; however, since we do not know which is the best antibiotic regimen for the treatment of this urinary infection, we analyzed the published evidence and conducted a systema

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common microbial infection found in all ages and sexes which involves inflammation of the urinary tract. These infections can range from simple bladder inflammation, that is, cystitis, to severe cases of uroseptic shock. UTI ranks as the number 1 infection that leads to a prescription of antibiotics after a doctor's visit. These infections are sometimes distressing and even life threatening, and both males (12%) and females (40%) have at least one symptomatic UTI throughout their lives. Diagnostic failures in case of bacterial infections are the main contribu

INTRODUCTION: Lower urinary tract infections (LUTI) are the most common urological diseases. Fosfomycin is one of the antibiotic agents with proven efficacy that are most frequently used to treat UTIs. Despite the high effectiveness of antibiotic therapy with this drug, in some patients, the LUTIs persist or recur. It is advisable to prevent the development of recurrent infections using herbal preparations. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated treatment of women with acute uncomplicated cystitis using the plant-based medication Phytolysin.

The formation of drug-protein adducts via metabolic activation and covalent binding may stimulate an immune response or may result in direct cell toxicity. Protein covalent binding is a potentially pivotal step in the development of idiosyncratic adverse drug reactions (IADRs). Trimethoprim (TMP)-sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a combination antibiotic that commonly causes IADRs. Recent data suggest that the contribution of the TMP component of TMP-SMX to IADRs may be underappreciated. We previously demonstrated that TMP is bioactivated to chemically reactive intermediates that can be trapped in vit

Nosocomial urinary tract infections are a common complication in healthcare systems worldwide. A review of the literature was performed in June 2014 using the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) database, through either PubMed or Ovid as a search engine, to identify publications regarding nosocomial urinary tract infections (NUTIs) definition, epidemiology, etiology and treatment.According to current definitions, more than 30% of nosocomial infections are urinary tract infections (UTIs). A UTI is defined 'nosocomial' (NUTI) when it is acquired in any healthcare in
