Associations are statistical clusterings of malformations not known to be polytopic field defects, sequences, or syndromes. The VATER association is a nonrandom association of malformations including vertebral, anal, cardiovascular, tracheoesophageal, genitourinary, and limb defects. The caudal "dysplasia" sequence of lumbosacral vertebral defects, genitourinary abnormalities, and imperforate anus overlaps the VATER association. The cloacal membrane agenesis sequence is a pattern of malformations resulting in the absence of anal, genital, and urinary orifices with associated malformations in s

Vissers-Bodmer Syndrome (VIBOS) is a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by variants in the CNOT1 gene. Affected individuals present with a broad clinical spectrum of developmental delays, intellectual disability, seizures, hypotonia, and behavioral challenges. Most affected individuals also have nonspecific dysmorphic facial features but no recognizable gestalt. We report a de novo pathogenic CNOT1 variant in a 6-month-old male patient who was evaluated for imperforate anus, partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, macrocephaly, hydronephrosis, overlapping toes, and fif

Classically, cloacal exstrophy presents with omphalocele, bladder exstrophy, imperforate anus, and spinal defects. We report a rare variant of cloacal exstrophy in a 6-day-old male with an intact lower abdominal wall, normal penis, and urethra. Only two such cases have been reported in the literature.

A logical approach to the diagnosis of pelvic pain in an adolescent with a suspected uterine anomaly is necessary for optimal care. A 16-year-old female born with an imperforate anus and a Class II müllerian anomaly is presented. A Strassman procedure resulted in unification of uterine horns, correction of pelvic pain, and potential fertility.

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic anorectoplasty (LARRP) for the treatment of select anorectal malformations has gained popularity due to enhanced visualization of the fistula and the ability to place the rectum within the sphincter complex while minimizing division of muscles and the perineal incision. However, given the technical challenges and reported complications of ligation, a number of techniques have been described, including using clips, suture ligation, endoloops, or division without closure. We aimed to evaluate fistula closure and division for high imperforate anus using a 5-mm stapler (Jus

We here report the case of a male newborn admitted immediately after birth with imperforate anus. Physical examination of the anal margin showed imperforate anus; the examination of the external genitalia objectified scrotal bifidity with a fistula filled with meconium at the level of the penis root. During urinary catheterization the catheter passed through the fistula (A), suggesting a rare anorectal malformation with recto-uretrobulbar fistula. Malformation assessment was without abnormalities. The newborn was admitted to the operating room and clouding was performed during surgery by cathe

We present two cases of OEIS (omphalocele, exstrophy, imperforate anus, spinal defects) complex -MIM 258040 and a review of the literature. Case 1 was a 14-year-old girl who presented at 30 weeks' gestation. An ultrasound examination showed an omphalocele and spina bifida; the bladder was not visualised. She went into spontaneous labour two weeks later and the baby died shortly after birth. A full post-mortem examination was refused, but the mother did agree to an external examination, skin biopsy for fibroblast culture, X rays and MR imaging. The MR imaging showed a pelvic kidney, a large omp

Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with multiple malformations and variable expression. Major findings include external ear anomalies, hearing loss, preaxial polydactyly and triphalangeal thumbs, imperforate anus, and renal malformations. Most patients with Townes-Brocks syndrome have normal intelligence, although mental retardation has been noted in a few.

We present a case of OEIS complex (omphalocele, exstrophy of bladder, imperforated anus, spinal defect) combined with colonic agenesis and glomerulocystic kidney disease (GCKD). The baby was born at 35.2 weeks of gestational age, weighing 2.51 kg. A prenatal ultrasound examination showed spina bifida, hydroureter, and a unilateral polycystic kidney. The postdelivery examination, which included a physical examination, simple X-ray, and pelvic MRI, showed a lower abdominal wall defect through which a small pouch with a segment of bowel protruded, imperforated anus, ambiguous external genitalia,

Fetal obstructive uropathy (FOU) is characterized by obstruction of the urethra, renal anomalies, ureterovesical dilatation, oligohydramnios, cryptorchidism, and abdominal muscle wall changes. The main objective of the present study was to better understand the relationship between FOU and renal pathology using a series of 15 male autopsy cases. A total of 11 cases with patent anus and 4 with imperforate anus were analyzed. Of the first group, most cases showed obstruction at the level of prostatic urethra. Seven cases showed obstruction at the level of the prostatic urethra and histologic stu

Although renal and cardiac malformations are commonly seen in Turner syndrome (TS), anorectal malformations, multicystic dysplastic kidney and interrupted aortic arch are quite rare in TS. A newborn with TS with three quite rare congenital malformations (imperforate anus/anal atresia associated with rectovestibular fistula, interrupted aortic arch, and multicystic dysplastic kidney) is presented.

The authors report on a baby with imperforate anus associated with duplication of descending colon, double pouch colon type IV, duplication of the urinary bladder, and a bifid penis. The interesting presentation of this problem and its management is discussed with a brief review of the probable embryologic basis for such an anomaly. Such a duplication of pouch colon has not been described previously.

The complete, imperforate transverse vaginal septum is one of the rare anomalies of the female reproductive tract. This anomaly is a disorder of vertical fusion of the Müllerian ducts and can present with or without obstruction. It has been classified as Type IIA as per the American Fertility Society (AFS) classification. Its thickness and site varies in the vaginal canal; the upper and middle third septa are common. The diagnosis can be made in newborns, infants, and adolescent girls. It is found associated with urological anomalies, anorectal malformation (ARM), and bicornuate uterus. We pre

Epispadias and exstrophy of the cloaca, also known as OEIS complex (omphalocele, exstrophy, imperforate anus, spinal defects), respectively constitute the most benign and severe ends of the bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) spectrum. In 2009, El-Hattab et al. reported the first patient with OEIS complex associated with a chromosome 1p36 deletion. Here we report a second patient with 1p36 deletion who also has classic bladder exstrophy, supporting the possible role of genes in this region in the development of BEEC. The absence of omphalocele and imperforate anus in our patient places

AIM: To evaluate problems with bladder dysfunction in patients operated on for imperforate anus.
METHODS: All patients (11M, 25F) with high or intermediate imperforate anus seen in this institution between 1987 and 1997 were subjected to the investigation. They had all undergone a posterior sagittal anorectoplasty procedure with the aim of preserving as much as possible of the fistula. Hospital charts were reviewed. A detailed and structured interview regarding micturition habits was performed. If the results of this were abnormal the patients were also subjected to flow registration, measure

The Pallister-Hall syndrome is characterised by a spectrum of anomalies including congenital hypothalamic "hamartoblastoma" hypopituitarism, imperforate anus, polydactyly and various visceral anomalies. Rare familial cases with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with variable expressivity have been reported. Cases of more mildly affected individuals with Pallister-Hall syndrome have been described, including cases of asymptomatic individuals. We report a case of Pallister-Hall syndrome with microphallus and without growth hormone deficiency that has been followed successfully for two ye

An autopsy case of sirenomelia accompanied by nephroblastoma has been reported. In this case, there were many complicating anomalies such as left renal agenesis, absence of external genital organs, imperforate anus, mass of redundant skin over sacral region, two umbilical vessels, absence of great omentum and patent ductus arteriosus. We considered this malformation as sympus monopus.

We conducted this study to investigate the effects of additional education using 3D visualization (3DV) and 3D printing (3DP) after applying 2D images for anatomical education in normal pediatric structures and congenital anomalies. For the production of 3DV and 3DP of the anatomical structures, computed tomography (CT) images of the four topics (the normal upper/lower abdomen, choledochal cyst, and imperforate anus) were used. Anatomical self-education and tests were administered to a total of 15 third-year medical students with these modules. Following the tests, surveys were conducted in or
