MEGDEL syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by 3-methylglutaconic aciduria, deafness-dystonia, hepatopathy, encephal … ked muscle weakness with no head support, generalized spasticity more prominent in lower limbs, and aphonia, but intact hearing. The child had excessive urinary excretion of 3-methylglutaconic acid, and his brain magnetic resonance imaging showed characteristic basal ganglia affection with "Putaminal eye sign." Whole-exome sequencing demonstrated a likely …

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review current literature of the impact of COVID-19 on musicians and returning to singing.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of peer-review articles was completed using PubMed, GoogleScholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search was completed using many key terms including voice, hoarseness, dysphonia, aphonia, cough, singers, and public speakers. The bibliography from each article found was searched to find additional articles. The search process revealed 56 peer-reviewed articles, 18 primary articles, ranging from the years 2019 to 2020.

OBJECTIVES: We describe the clinical characteristics and management of vocal fold paralysis in infants who were born with a tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF).
METHODS: This retrospective case series included all infants born with TEFs who presented to our pediatric otolaryngology unit and intensive care unit because of dyspnea or aphonia in the years 2005 and 2006, and who were found to have vocal fold paralysis.
RESULTS: Five boys and 1 girl were studied. One infant had stridor before TEF repair, and 5 after it. All children underwent flexible laryngotracheobronchoscopy and were treated in th…

A 6-year-review of patients who presented with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) to our hospital from January 1996 to December 2001 was carried out. Ten cases were identified, of which six were juvenile-onset RRP. Hoarseness was the most common symptom, noted in nine (90%) patients. Other clinical presentations included cough, stridor and aphonia. All patients had glottic papillomas; two had multiple sites of involvement. One patient underwent a tracheostomy that revealed papillomas over the trachea, bronchus and lung parenchyma. Half of the patients were Chinese. Of the six cases of …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate endoscopic CO2 laser vaporization as a treatment of small glottic laryngeal carcinomas selected by means of video lar … mal or almost normal. Slight dysphonia was reported by five patients (11%). No serious dysphonia or aphonia occurred.
CONCLUSION: Endoscopic CO2 laser vaporization, compared with radiotherapy or more extensive surgery, constitutes an adequate treatment for selected patients with small glottic laryngeal carcinomas. As a result of this treatment, it will b …

BACKGROUND: Bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) following blunt neck trauma is an exceptionally rare and potentially life-threatening condition. It usually involves structural injuries to the larynx or cervical spine. Isolated BVCP without structural injury is extremely rare. This case demonstrates delayed airway compromise caused by aspiration, rather than fixed glottic obstruction.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a young male who sustained a motorcycle accident in which his neck became entangled in barbed wire. He initially developed aphonia without respiratory distress and was a…

CONCLUSION: Patients must be examined for hoarseness, laryngeal pain, aphonia, asymmetry, bleeding and subcutaneous emphysema located in or around the larynx. Based on a computertomography, dislocated fractures should be operated (preferably within 48 hours). It is necessary to obtain stable fractures. The use of titanium net …

Botox injection into the thyroarytenoid muscle is thought to alter the glottal competence and laryngeal adduction of patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD). Hypofunctional responses to treatment have been rated subjectively and inferred from postinjection breathy voice, aphonia, midline glottal gap, or subclinical aspiration. Clinical experience suggests that temporary hypofunction varies in duration and severity among patients. This study used electroglottographic measures to examine changes over time in glottal competence during the relatively stable phonation produced by 5 patien…

Despite the recent progress of chemotherapy and sophisticated radiotherapy, surgery still remains the most reliable treatment for advanced t … on pneumonia. As a result of total laryngectomy, the patients will suffer significant disabilities: aphonia and the loss of deglutition that limits the oral intake to only liquid or pasty food. With this clinical background, we have been contriving to overcome these significant surgical shortcomings by conducting larynx-preserving operation. In this case …

Wind instrumentalists, especially brass players, and singers share common factors, including vocal tract shape, function and pressure, vocal fold opening and closure, breath vector of force and air flow rates. To understand the mechanism and function of the vocal folds with a pathological lesion, it is necessary to visualize the differing interactions of the vocal tract during wind and brass instrument playing and in singing. A school band director, singer, wind and brass instrumentalist, was referred by musician colleagues with intermittent dysphonia, aphonia, and inability to sing high notes…

The superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a uncommon complication of thyroid cancers. It is produced as consequence of the mediastinal spread of the tumor or by intravascular invasion with thrombosis. We describe a case of insular thyroid carcinoma with an SVCS solved by putting an intravenous stent. The patient was a 73 year old male that consulted for aphonia and presence of a tumor in the right side of the neck of two months of evolution. The PAAF of thyroid suggested the diagnosis of "follicular tumor". A total thyroidectomy was performed on the patient and the sample histological study re…

INTRODUCTION: The Locked-In syndrome (LIS) is defined by: (i) the presence of sustained eye opening (bilateral ptosis should be ruled out as a complicating factor); (ii) preserved awareness; (iii) aphonia or hypophonia; (iv) quadriplegia or quadriparesis; and (v) a primary mode of communication that uses vertical or lateral eye movement or blinking. Acute ventral pontine lesions are its most common cause. Following such brainstem lesions patients may remain comatose for some time and then gradually awaken, remaining paralyzed and voiceless, superficially resembling the vegetative state.

Since the phoniatrician H. Bauer described the first case of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy most likely caused by intubation some 45 years … l palsy of recurrent laryngeal nerve due to intubation would be associated with severe dysphonia or aphonia, not with dyspnea because of the typical intermediate position of the paralyzed vocal folds with a normal electromyographic function of the cricothyroid muscle. The use of these methods to identify the nature of postoperative recurrent laryngeal ner …

Total laryngectomy is potentially a debilitative surgery resulting in compromise of some of the most basic functions of life including speech and swallowing. This may have a profound adverse effect on the patient's physical, functional, and emotional health, and may result in a decreased quality of life (QOL). Until the 1980s, total laryngectomy was regarded as a dreadful, but often, life-saving procedure for which there was little alternative, and was used as a last resort. At that time survival at any cost in terms of QOL was paramount and many laryngectomies were forced into an isolated lif
