Design of Reliable, Resilient, and Robust Architecture and Control for Next-Generation Optical-Wireless Networks.

The convergence of optical transport and wireless access in next- and future-generation networks imposes strict QoS demands, particularly end-to-end reliability, which conventional redundancy approaches cannot meet. The paper presents an architectural framework integrating three aspects: a risk-diverse route-computation algorithm with shared-risk link group constraints that achieve polynomial complexity and overcome memory constraints. Secondly, it presents a self-optimising signal-control bus modelled as a closed-loop queueing system that maintains 95% throughput under an offered load of 400%

Potential of deep learning in advancing electrocardiography arrhythmia diagnosis in emergency medicine.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate differentiation between ventricular tachycardia (VT) and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) with aberrant conduction in wide complex tachyarrhythmias (WCT) remains a significant challenge in emergency medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of deep learning (DL) models, specifically pretrained residual network (ResNet) architectures, in classifying these arrhythmias using electrocardiography (ECG) data. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted, analysing 652 WCT ECGs and 248 normal sinus rhythm ECGs from an emergency medicine clinic. Three

High resolution immunoinformatic profiling of Zonula occludens toxin reveals a conserved multiepitope vaccine candidate in Acinetobacter baumannii.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a multidrug-resistant (MDR) nosocomial pathogen associated with exceptionally high mortality, underscoring the urgent need for immune-based strategies that operate independently of antibiotic susceptibility. The Zonula occludens toxin (Zot), a barrier-disrupting virulence factor embedded within mobile genetic elements, has recently been proposed as a conserved component of clinically relevant A. baumannii lineages, however, its immunological architecture remains poorly defined. Here, we applied an integrated immunoinformatic and evolutionary framework to evaluate Zot

MDF-Net for abnormality detection by fusing X-rays with clinical data.

This study investigates the effects of including patients' clinical information on the performance of deep learning (DL) classifiers for disease location in chest X-ray images. Although current classifiers achieve high performance using chest X-ray images alone, consultations with practicing radiologists indicate that clinical data is highly informative and essential for interpreting medical images and making proper diagnoses. In this work, we propose a novel architecture consisting of two fusion methods that enable the model to simultaneously process patients' clinical data (structured data)

Multiscale Design of Porous Architectures for Highly Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis.

Driven by the global imperative for carbon neutrality and sustainable energy development, oxygen electrocatalysis, especially the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), has emerged as a key link between renewable electricity and clean energy conversion devices. However, the sluggish kinetics of these reactions severely limit energy efficiency, a challenge exacerbated by insufficient active-site utilization and restricted tri-phase mass transport. This review highlights recent advances in multiscale porous architectures for oxygen electrocatalysis, with particular

A one-step volumetric biofabrication platform for complex hydrogel-based hollow biomaterials.

Rotational molding (RM) is a widely used industrial process for producing hollow polymeric structures, yet it remains largely unexplored for biomaterials fabrication. Here, a low-cost 3D-printed biofabrication platform is introduced that adapts the general concept of RM to generate tunable hollow constructs with high structural fidelity. Using uniaxial RM, tubular-like hydrogels with precisely controlled diameter and wall thickness are generated by crosslinking light-responsive natural-based polymers, such as modified proteins and polysaccharides, under mild, cell-compatible conditions. The pr

Real-Time Observation of Macroscopic Hierarchical Pattern Formation in a Minimal Chemical System via Reaction-Induced Phase Separation.

Spatially periodic patterns have been widely studied in chemical and biological systems, yet the emergence of hierarchical or multiscale architectures remains less explored experimentally, particularly in minimal material frameworks. In this work, it was observed in real time that a simple two-component solution consisting of methyltrimethoxysilane and phytic acid spontaneously forms macroscale hierarchical patterns upon exposure to air. Spectroscopic analyses reveal that chemical reactions initiated by environmental moisture drive sol-gel condensation and reaction-induced phase separation (RI

Direct visualization of native GSDMD pores reveals lipid-driven stabilization during pyroptosis.

Gasdermin D (GSDMD) executes pyroptosis by forming membrane pores, yet how these structures assemble and are regulated in cells has remained technically inaccessible. We introduce polymer-supported plasma membranes (PSPMs), which preserve native PM properties while providing cytosolic access for nanoscopic imaging. Combining PSPMs with DNA-PAINT super-resolution microscopy, we visualize human and mouse GSDMD nanostructures directly at the PM of pyroptotic cells and uncover species-specific differences in pore size. Quantitative analyses reveal that GSDMD assembles into heterogeneous macromolec

MOF-Derived Binary Nanophases of Metal Oxides and Oxidized Carbon for Highly Selective and Long-Lived Gas Sensing.

Highly selective and durable chemiresistive gas sensing demands architectures that enable rapid analyte transport, strong interfacial reactivity, and stable charge transduction over prolonged operation. Here, we report a sensing layer derived from a Sn-based metal-organic framework (Sn-MOF), in which oxidative conversion transforms the Sn-MOF into a nanometer-scale binary nanophase of rutile SnO2 and oxidized carbon within an open, web-like, junction-rich mesoporous network. In this architecture, ultrafine SnO2 nanodomains are intimately integrated with a retained oxidized carbon binary nanoph

Modeling Biochemical Gradients In Vitro to Control Cell Compartmentalization in a Microengineered 3D Model of the Intestinal Epithelium.

Gradients of signaling pathways within the intestinal stem cell (ISC) niche are instrumental for cellular compartmentalization and tissue function, yet how are they sensed by the epithelium is still not fully understood. Here a new in vitro model of the small intestine based on primary epithelial cells (i), apically accessible (ii), with native tissue mechanical properties and controlled mesh size (iii), 3D villus-like architecture (iv), and precisely controlled biomolecular gradients of the ISC niche (v) is presented. Biochemical gradients are formed through hydrogel-based scaffolds by free d

Air-Cladding Blue Laser Diodes.

Low refractive index contrast in long-wavelength nitride laser diodes (LDs) limits optical confinement, motivating new architectural approaches. Here, we report the first electrically driven edge-emitting LDs featuring top and bottom air-claddings. To enable the top air cladding, the architecture employs a tunnel junction, which converts the current flow from holes to electrons. This allows for low series resistance lateral current flow and placement of the metal contact on the side of the LD mesa. The bottom air-cladding is realized postepitaxy through lateral electrochemical etching (ECE) of

Platform-Mediated Visibility of Exploitation Indicators: A Cross-Platform Analysis of AdultWork (UK) and CallEscort (US).

Online commercial sex platforms have become key environments in which potential indicators relevant to technology-facilitated sexual exploitation (TFSE) and technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) may be observed. Current language models and computational approaches to identifying potential exploitation often assume that behavioural indicators (e.g., geographical mobility, pricing, and other linguistic markers) are easily accessible and comparable across online spaces and jurisdictions. This study challenges this assumption by showing that platform design largely shapes the variab

Integrating real-time imaging and transcriptomics reveals morphotype-associated differences in biofilm architecture and pyrene removal by Mycolicibacterium parafortuitum.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are persistent environmental contaminants whose biodegradation is often constrained by low bioavailability, particularly under static and diffusion-limited conditions. This study investigated the association between biofilm architecture and pyrene removal in two closely related Mycolicibacterium parafortuitum strains exhibiting different colony morphotypes. A rough colony morphotype strain, D3 (D3-R), was isolated from agricultural soil using fluorescence-activated cell sorting in a single-cell co-culture with the previously characterized smooth morphotype stra

The influence of 10n and 10n+5 linker lengths on chromatin fiber topologies explored by mesoscale modeling.

The structural organization of chromatin is intricately influenced by the length of linker DNA connecting nucleosomes. Some studies have suggested preferred linker lengths of 10n and 10n+5 base pairs (bp) (n = integer). Because these lengths dictate the rotational orientation of successive nucleosomes in the fiber axis, they can markedly affect chromatin fiber compaction and topology. Using a refined mesoscale chromatin model with 5-bp resolution, we investigate the influence of linker DNA periodicity, linker histone density, salt concentration, and starting fiber topology on chromatin archite

TBAid: A domain-restricted diagnostic assistant for tuberculosis awareness and patient support using OpenRouter API Integration.

This research introduces a study of a domain-specific intelligent assistant, TBAid, that is a conversational chatbot to assist with tuberculosis (TB) awareness and health advice. A structured rule-based system integrated with the Hugging Face Inference API using the Qwen/Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct large language model provides TB-focused responses to structured user queries. TBAid is designed to increase public awareness in low-resource and rural areas. It specifically targets communities with poor access to specialist consultations and medical report interpretation. A key novelty of the assistant i

The Evolution of Upper Extremity Vascular System for the Interventional Cardiologist: A 400-Million-Year Tale for Arm-Based Interventions.

From the delicate fish fins to the highly specialized human arm, the vascular architecture of the "upper" extremity has undergone significant remodeling throughout vertebrate evolution. This fascinating journey leaves behind a complex anatomy and sometimes puzzling vascular variants that are difficult to interpret without evolutionary insight. With the rise of transradial interventions and antebrachial venous access for right heart catheterization, understanding this evolutionary context can offer the interventional cardiologist valuable awareness about the anatomical constraints and potential

Bilateral lower second molar impaction in teenagers: an emergent problem?

The frequency of simultaneously impacted second and third molars in teenagers is increasing and becoming a common occurrence in adolescent oral surgery practice. The traditional treatment is the removal of the third molar by conventional access but repositioning of the surgical flap to the distal face of the first molar can predispose to complications such as pericoronitis and delayed healing of the attached gingiva. We present a case in which we use the germectomy approach to remove the impacted third molar for the eruption of the second molar through a vestibular incision. This incision offe

Access-to-killing relay by wavelength-division Janus nanomotors for biofilm phototherapy.

Biofilm phototherapy is constrained by therapeutic reach, as light-triggered damage is often concentrated near accessible regions while bacteria remain protected within the extracellular matrix. Here we report wavelength-division Janus nanomotors for access-gated biofilm phototherapy, in which asymmetric interfacial energy conversion and wavelength-resolved activation couple active transport with antibacterial action. Janus SiO2/Au/FeTAPP nanomotors (JSAF) combine asymmetric Au and FeTAPP functional domains on dendritic porous silica nanoparticles. Under 808 nm irradiation, the asymmetric Au d

Epigenomic landscape of the human dorsal root ganglion: sex differences and transcriptional regulation of nociceptive genes.

Gene expression is influenced by chromatin architecture via controlled access of regulatory factors to DNA. To better understand gene regulation in the human dorsal root ganglion (hDRG) we used bulk and spatial transposase-accessible chromatin technology followed by sequencing (ATAC-seq). Using bulk ATAC-seq, we detected that in females diverse differentially accessible chromatin regions (DARs) mapped to the X chromosome and in males to autosomal genes. EGR1/3 and SP1/4 transcription factor binding motifs were abundant within DARs in females, and JUN, FOS and other AP-1 factors in males. To di

Photocatalyzed hydrogen atom transfer enables multicomponent olefin oxo-amidomethylation under aerobic conditions.

The direct functionalization of abundant and readily available feedstock chemicals has emerged as a powerful strategy to rapidly increase molecular complexity and access valuable scaffolds. Herein, we report a novel photocatalyzed three-component oxo-amidomethylation of aromatic olefins under aerobic conditions, enabling the synthesis of N-(γ-oxopropyl)amides via simultaneous incorporation of two orthogonal functional groups across the alkene C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond in a single step. Mechanistic features include the photocatalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)-mediated engagement
