Although substantial literature exists on child sexual abuse (CSA), little is known about abuses children encounter in northern Uganda, a post-conflict area. Media reports have indicated a high incidence for CSA. The study, firstly, explored boys' and girls' experiences of sexual abuse by adults in this post-conflict region and secondly, interventions directed at improving the current situation of children at risk of child abuse and the survivors were investigated as well. The study was guided by radical feminism and nested ecological framework theories. Semi-structured interviews were conduct

In 16 years of conflict, primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan, wounded warriors have primarily been subjected to blast type of injuries. Evacuation strategies have led to unprecedented survival rates in blast-injured soldiers, resulting in large numbers of wounded warriors with complex limb trauma. Bone and soft tissue defects have resulted in increased use of complex reconstructive algorithms to restore limbs and function. In addition, in failed salvage attempts, advances in amputation options are being developed. In this review, we summarize state-of-the-art limb-salvage methods for both soft t

Lead pollution in Arctic ice reflects midlatitude emissions from ancient lead-silver mining and smelting. The few reported measurements have been extrapolated to infer the performance of ancient economies, including comparisons of economic productivity and growth during the Roman Republican and Imperial periods. These studies were based on sparse sampling and inaccurate dating, limiting understanding of trends and specific linkages. Here we show, using a precisely dated record of estimated lead emissions between 1100 BCE and 800 CE derived from subannually resolved measurements in Greenland ic

War and interpersonal violence together account for a large burden on global health. Yet very few studies look at the relationship between these types of aggression. Non-partner physical violence (NPPV) is an often-understudied form of gender-based violence (GBV). This analysis draws on two datasets from one conflict-affected country, Liberia, to evaluate the impact of conflict on NPPV post-conflict. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED) measures the intensity of the conflict in Liberia from 1999-2003, while the Demographic and Heath Survey (DHS) data measure women's experience

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary conflicts of interest between the sexes often lead to co-evolutionary arms races consisting of repeated arisal of traits advantageous for one sex but harmful to the other sex, and counter-adaptations by the latter. In hermaphrodites, these antagonistic interactions are at least an equally important driving force. Here, we investigate the evolution of one of the most striking examples of sexual conflict in hermaphrodites, the so-called shooting of love-darts in land snails. Stabbing this calcareous dart through the partner's skin ultimately increases paternity. This tra

How can states with a history of recent armed conflict trust one another? Distrust between Ukraine and Russia aggravates security fears and limits hopes for a meaningful resolution of the bloodiest armed conflict in Europe since 1994. Hostility levels have risen dramatically between the populations of Ukraine and Russia after the events of 2013-2015. Political psychology offers two competing approaches to increase trust between the publics of different countries: appealing to an overarching, common identity above the national level vs. affirming a sense of national identity. This project asks

Since 2014, a protracted armed conflict has afflicted eastern Ukraine, resulting in the displacement of over 1.4 million residents. The resulting humanitarian crisis has placed women, particularly displaced women, at greater risk of gender-based violence (GBV). In Ukraine, reports of GBV were higher following the start of the conflict (22.4% in 2014 vs. 18.3% in 2007), with displaced women suffering from GBV nearly three times more than non-displaced residents (15.2% vs. 5.3%). Many GBV incidents in Ukraine have been reported along the "contact line," the border separating government from non-

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in natural disasters, armed conflict, and other resource-limited settings, where advanced imaging, invasive neuromonitoring, and specialized neurosurgical care, common in high-resource environments, are often unavailable. This narrative review summarizes the global health impact of TBI in austere conditions and outlines key management strategies and ethical considerations relevant to these contexts. Evidence from civilian disaster responses, military conflicts, and global health guidelines highlight the need for adaptable

The evacuation timelines of Ukrainian casualties through the Operational Patient Care Pathway (OPCP) vary widely, ranging from minutes to days. Western Military reliance on air evacuation models has proven inefficient in the current conflict, dominated by sophisticated air defense and electronic warfare. This paper explores the adaptation of medical support in static warfare, focusing on the development of Subterranean Casualty Stabilization Points (ST CSP) by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). These facilities provide damage control resuscitation and damage control surgery close to the front

Finding and treating all forms of tuberculosis (TB) (latent, drug-susceptible, drug-resistant, multidrug-resistant, and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis) among migrants, displaced populations, and refugees are important challenges facing TB control programs in Europe. Many of these populations live in poor conditions, with limited access to healthcare and TB services. Ever-increasing armed conflicts in Europe and other parts of the world continue to exacerbate rates of migration to and within Europe, with considerable implications for health services. TB in Europe is more prevalent in m…

AIM: Armed conflict remains a tragic feature of the modern world and so it is necessary to continue to study its health impacts. Even the study of historical conflicts is relevant given that certain health impacts are common to most wars e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHODS: This study built on a previous quantitative analysis of a randomly selected group of 200 New Zealand veterans from the First World War (WWI). From this sample we selected 10 cases that illustrated particular themes around morbidity impacts.
RESULTS: The theme of severity of impacts was illustrated with a

Aggregate statistics can provide intra-conflict and inter-conflict mortality comparisons and trends within and between U.S. combat operations. However, capturing individual-level data to evaluate medical and non-medical factors that influence combat casualty mortality has historically proven difficult. The Department of Defense (DoD) Trauma Registry, developed as an integral component of the Joint Trauma System during recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, has amassed individual-level data that have afforded greater opportunity for a variety of analyses and comparisons. Although aggregate s

INTRODUCTION: The management of infections in war wounds is a problem aggravated by the presence of multiresistant bacteria and requires a combined approach with surgery. Literature has identified the risks and patterns of antibiotic resistance in previous armed conflicts, but the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has required the study of specific bacterial resistance patterns.
METHODS: We included war-injured patients from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict transferred for treatment to the General Defense Hospital of Zaragoza from May 2022 to October 2023. Epidemiological data, factors related to the …

While severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and moral injury among civilians affected by armed conflicts is generally understudied, even less research exists on civilian populations during an active war. This paper reports a large-scale study that administered standard assessments of PTSD and moral injury severity, as well as rich demographic questionnaires, to nearly 1300 Ukrainian civilians during the ongoing Russian invasion. Analyses revealed an extremely high prevalence of severe PTSD symptoms and moral injury, relative to both proposed clinical cut-offs and to earlie…

This paper examined the vulnerability of travelers to kidnapping, abduction and armed robbery attacks and in some extreme cases, death along Nigeria's highways. Insecurity on the nation's highways became a contemporary criminological discourse following the emergence of new strands of criminality like militancy, terrorism, kidnapping, herdsmen-farmers violence, communal conflicts and banditry. Nigerian highways have become the major operational hotspots for criminals who harass, terrorize, and traumatize travelers at will. With the ever-rising insecurity on Nigerian highways, the military and

The 2022 Russian invasion of the Ukraine created a large-scale humanitarian crisis that has intensified as the conflict persists. The impact of armed conflict, such as forced migration, exposure to violence, supply shortages, destruction of infrastructure, and interruption of essential services, can have serious negative consequences for the mental health and wellbeing of Ukrainians living through the invasion and its aftermath. At the same time threat to a nation can trigger a wave of patriotism. Such feelings of patriotic belonging, love, pride and caring for a country can help maintain nati

BACKGROUND: We explore the intersectional risk of stigma and violence faced by women and girls trafficked by armed groups, and their ‘children born of war’ (CBOW) in Nigeria and Iraq. Failing to address intersectional violence, stigma and discrimination has severe implications for women’s and children’s health, wellbeing, intergenerational trauma, sustained reintegration, and Women, Youth, Peace and Security Agendas, Security Council Resolutions 1325/2467 and Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). BACKGROUND: Cholera is an acute, severe, illness caused by infection with Vibrio cholerae. Cholera outbreaks are closely linked to armed conflicts and humanitarian emergencies. This study describes the cholera outbreak amidst conflict in Gadaref state, discusses the possible factors mediated its spread and proposes future improvements in preparedness and response measures.
METHODS: A retrospective analytical study was conducted using national surveillance records of cholera cases, supported by interviews with key informants involved in preparedness and response, along with a review of state r…
