[Speech and language development disorders in children].

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, disturbances in the acquirement of language skills are not infrequently overlooked or are recognized too late, in particular when the problem is speech understanding, or when behavioral disturbances predominate. Diagnostic guidelines differentiate between circumscribed articulation disorders and expressive and receptive speech problems. The diagnostic work-up must take account of the changes in symptoms occurring during the course of the child's development. Mental comorbidity may be observed in every second speech-disordered child. For the opera…

[Features of the pronunciation in school-age children with minimal hearing impairment].

The peculiarities of the pronunciation of children aged 7-9 years with minimal hearing impairment (MHI) were studied. In 20 children with MHI and 20 children with normal hearing and speech development, pronunciation, the phonemic skills, articulatory praxis, as potential mechanisms of pronunciation disorders were assessed with a battery of tests. It was found that children with MHI are a heterogeneous group in terms of the state of pronunciation and the mechanisms that cause pronunciation disorders. 30% of children with MHI, mainly with unilateral hearing loss, did not have pronunciation disor

[Minimal emotional dysfunction and first impression formation in personality disorders].

"Minimal cerebral dysfunctions" are isolated impairments of basic mental functions, which are elements of complex functions like speech. The best described are cognitive dysfunctions such as reading and writing problems, dyscalculia, attention deficits, but also motor dysfunctions such as problems with articulation, hyperactivity or impulsivity. Personality disorders can be characterized by isolated emotional dysfunctions in relation to emotional adequacy, intensity and responsivity. For example, paranoid personality disorders can be characterized by continuous and inadequate distrust, as a di

Disentangling Crowdfunding from Fraudfunding.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy alters the posture of the oro-facial structures by obstructing the upper airways and restricting nasal breathing. These postural changes may eventually have an impact on facial skeletal development and dental occlusion. The postural adjustments may negatively impact a child's life by affecting a number of speech-production factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to detect the speech sound disorders in school aged Egyptian children with adenoid hypertrophy and if they were related to structure changes in the airway that caused by adenoid hypertrophy. METHODOLOGY:

Investigation of the effectiveness of articulation therapy through tele-practice on children with cleft palate in Khuzestan Province during COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: A cleft palate is a common type of facial malformation. Compensatory articulation errors are one of the important causes of unclear speech in children with cleft palate. Tele-practice (TP) helps to connect therapists and clients for assessment and therapy. Our goal is to investigate the effectiveness of articulation therapy through tele-practice on cleft palate children in Khuzestan Province during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS & METHODS: Before starting the treatment, a 20-min speech sample was recorded individually from all the children. Speech intelligibility and the perce

Occurrence of the repair strategy of stopping: relationship with phonological disorder severity and affected phonemes.

PURPOSE: To analyze the occurrence of the repair strategy of stopping in the different severities of phonological disorder, and to verify the phonemes most affected by this strategy. METHODS: Participants were 33 children, 14 female and 19 male, aged between 4 and 8 years. All children used the repair strategy of stopping for at least one phoneme or allophone, with percentage equal to or greater than 40%. Data were selected from the first speech assessment, before starting intervention, and phonological disorder severity was determined by the Percentage of Consonants Correct-Revised. The numb

The speed of articulatory movements involved in speech production in children with dyslexia.

A group of children with dyslexia (mean ages 9 and 14 years) was studied, together with group of children without dyslexia matched for age. Participants were monolingual native speakers of the Bosnian language with transparent orthography. In total, the diagnostic tests were performed with 41 children with dyslexia and 41 nondyslexic children. The participants were asked to produce monosyllables, /pa/, /ta/, and /ka/, and the trisyllable /pataka/, as fast as possible. Analysis was undertaken in four ways: (1) time of occlusion duration for plosives (duration of stop), (2) voice onset time for

[Dysarthria across Parkinson's disease progression. Natural history of its components: dysphonia, dysprosody and dysarthria].

Dysarthria refers to a collective name for a group of neurologic motor speech disorders, resulting from central and/or peripheral nervous system abnormalities. Speech alteration in Parkinson's disease, so-called hypokinetic dysarthria, presents with prosodic insufficiency, related to a monotony of pitch and intensity, a reduction of accentuation, variable speech rate and possible phoneme imprecision. In most cases, voice is harsh and breathy. This symptom can affect both voice and speech quality, as well as prosody and intelligibility. As a consequence, many patients complain about speech impa

Distributional and stylistic variation in /r/-misarticulations: a case study.

This article describes the case of a client who displayed some interesting patterns of realization of the target English phoneme /r/. These varied according to both distribution within the word, and style of utterance. We speculate as to the cause of some of these forms, and on possible therapy strategies.

Commentary on "treatment decisions for children with speech-sound disorders": revisiting the past in EBP.

PURPOSE: This commentary, written in response to Alan Kamhi's paper, "Treatment Decisions for Children with Speech-Sound Disorders," further considers the "what" or goal selection process of decision making with the aim of efficiency-getting the most change in the shortest time. METHOD: My comments reflect a focus on the client values piece of the evidence-based practice (EBP) triad through validating treatment decisions for individual clients using generalization data. Such data are ideal for demonstrating change according to specific benchmarks and suggesting that treatment was responsible

Selective magnocellular deficits in dyslexia: a "phantom contour" study.

A technique by Rogers-Ramachandran and Ramachandran [Vis. Res. 38 (1998) 71-77] was adapted to evaluate magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) visual processing efficiency, with identical task structure, in normal and dyslexic children. A battery of phonological, orthographic and cognitive tasks was administered to assess reading ability and component reading skills in both groups. For the visual processing experiment, children identified shapes created by patterns of dots flickering in counter-phase. The dots were black and white in the M condition, versus isoluminant red and green in the P

Evidence of motor programming deficits in children diagnosed with DAS.

In this study the hypothesis of motor programming involvement in developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) was investigated by studying articulatory compensation. Five children with DAS and 5 normally speaking children (age 5;0 [years;months] to 6;10), and 6 adult women produced utterances in a normal speaking condition and in a bite-block condition in which the mandible was kept in a fixed position. Throughout the utterances, the course of the second formant was used to determine articulatory compensation and the effect of the bite block on anticipatory coarticulation. Results showed that the bit

Separate influences of acoustic AM and FM sensitivity on the phonological decoding skills of impaired and normal readers.

Developmental dyslexia is associated with deficits in the processing of basic auditory stimuli. Yet it is unclear how these sensory impairments might contribute to poor reading skills. This study better characterizes the relationship between phonological decoding skills, the lack of which is generally accepted to comprise the core deficit in reading disabilities, and auditory sensitivity to amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM). Thirty-eight adult subjects, 17 of whom had a history of developmental dyslexia, completed a battery of psychophysical measures of sensitivity to FM

Unrepaired clefts in the hard palate: speech deficits at the ages of 5 and 7 years and their relationship to size of the cleft.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the size of oronasal openings in the hard palate and speech deficits. Audiotape recordings and plaster casts were taken according to standard procedures at 5 and 7 years of age from 22 consecutive children born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate treated at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden. The soft palate had been repaired before the age of 12 months, whereas the cleft in the hard palate was left unrepaired, to be closed later. Perceptual judgements of nine speech variables at 5 and 7 years of age

Nonlinear phonology: introduction and clinical application.

The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce a recent advance in phonological theory, "nonlinear phonology," which differs fundamentally from previous theories by focusing on the hierarchical nature of relationships among phonological units. We first introduce the basic concepts and assumptions of nonlinear phonological theory and then demonstrate clinical applications of the theory for assessment and intervention. Data from a child with a severe phonological disorder are used to illustrate aspects of nonlinear theory. The data are first analyzed in terms of phonological processes in order to

Articulatory disorders in speech among Finnish-speaking students according to age, sex, and speech therapy.

A group of Finnish-speaking students (n = 451) was examined clinically to study occurrence of articulatory disorders in speech, controlling for the possible effects of age, sex, and previous speech therapy. Distortions of the /s/ sound were found in 16%, of the /r/ sound in 3%, and of the /l/, /n/, or /d/ sounds in about 1% of the subjects; the rarest faultily produced sounds were usually combined with other articulatory disorders. According to fitted log-linear functions, age and sex were not related to prevalence of articulatory disorders in speech among young adults, while there was a tende
