The most medically significant arboviruses causing human illness in south-east Asia belong to the genera Flavivirus (dengue, Japanese encephalitis, Kunjin, Zika, etc.) and Alphavirus (Chikungunya, Sindbis, Getah, etc.). All of these arboviral diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue virus is the most prevalent arbovirus in south-east Asia and constitutes a major public health problem. Japanese encephalitis virus is also widespread in the region and symptomatic infection is associated with high mortality and severe neurological morbidity. Chikungunya virus causes mild but extremely painfu…

A five year study (1995-1999) was conducted in Northern India to investigate epidemiological aspects of rabies in domestic animals. For this purpose, brain tissue samples were collected from rabies suspect animals including 231 dogs, 79 buffaloes, 46 cattle and 28 wild species. Out of the 384 rabies suspected cases, 56% were positive for rabies by fluorescent antibody test (FAT), the mouse inoculation test (MIT) and histopathological techniques. Variations in clinical signs of rabies were recorded for individual animals with significant differences observed between dogs and bovines with respec

We report a 68-year-old Indian man who was referred to the Hematology Unit for investigation for thrombocytopenia, an incidental finding during a pre-operative screening for prostatectomy. Physical examination was unremarkable. There was no splenomegaly, hepatomegaly or lymphadenopathy. Complete blood counts showed normal hemoglobin and total white cell count with moderate thrombocytopenia. Hairy-cell leukemia was diagnosed based on peripheral blood film, bone-marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy findings, supported by immunophenotyping results by flow cytometry. The purpose of this report is t

BACKGROUND: Thiamine deficiency (beriberi) is common in some parts of southeast Asia. Acute thiamine deficiency can mimic many complications of malaria, such as encephalopathy and lactic acidosis. We examined the incidence of thiamine deficiency in adults admitted to hospital with malaria in Thailand.
METHODS: For this prospective study, we recruited consecutive patients with malaria or other febrile illness who presented to Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, between May and July, 1992. We used the activation coefficient (alpha) for transketolase activity in erythrocytes to …

BACKGROUND: Oropouche virus (OROV), a neglected arbovirus of the Orthobunyavirus genus within the Peribunyaviridae family, has historically been confined to South and Central America. Recent epidemiological changes, including geographic expansion, increasing incidence, exported travel-associated cases, and reports of neurological and congenital complications, have raised concern regarding its potential for wider dissemination. Although no confirmed cases have been reported in Asia to date, future emergence remains biologically and ecologically plausible due to interconnected virological, ecolo…

Objective: Despite the World Health Organization's 2002 call for competency-based sexology training worldwide, the Asia-Oceania region lacks a systematic overview of its professional education landscape. While Europe and North America have established mature certification systems, no integrated regional mapping has been conducted. Embedded in the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) Professional Education in Sexology Committee (PES) global project, this study examines program characteristics, regulatory frameworks, and clinical-practice challenges across Australia, Taiwan, Mainland China,…

This special issue emerged from a two-pronged question: what it means to be lesbian in/from South Asia and what it means to be so in the contemporary moment. The contemporary is marked by both enduring and emergent forms of precarities, changing strategies of survival, intensified digitalization and transformations in global queer politics. Seeking to open up the ideas of "lesbian" and "South Asia" both individually and in relation to each other, the issue underscores the inadequacy of singular modes of identity, territory or politics to apprehend either. The contributions broadly engage with …

Factor VIII (FVIII) inhibitors represent antibodies that develop against coagulation FVIII and reduce FVIII functional activity. FVIII inhibitors may develop in patients with congenital hemophilia A (CHA) in response to infused FVIII (allo-antibodies) or in patients without CHA in a variety of situations (auto-antibodies; acquired hemophilia A). We report updated findings for FVIII inhibitor testing in our geographic region using recent data (testing for the past 5 years; 2020-2024 inclusive) from the RCPAQAP (Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Program), an internat…

Valvular heart disease poses a significant health burden in the Asia-Pacific region, with its epidemiology varying widely across countries caused by diverse socioeconomic and health care situations. Rheumatic heart disease remains prevalent, especially in low- to middle-income areas, while degenerative valvular diseases are emerging in developed regions caused by an aging population. Significant disparities in access to health care and intervention result in variable clinical outcomes. In the past decade, transcatheter interventions have revolutionized the management of patients with valvular …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) is increasingly recognized as a distinct phenotype of chronic rhinitis, yet its prevalence and characteristics in Asia remain underexplored. Given the variability in reported LAR prevalence across regions, this review re-evaluates the allergy landscape in Asia, considering environmental and immunological factors, as well as study methodology that may contribute to differences from Western populations.
RECENT FINDINGS: There were more Asian studies which reported lower prevalence (0-20%), in contrast to higher rates in Europe, particularly Medit…

In 1923, H.R. Carter published a seminal treatise on the possibility of yellow fever virus spreading to the Asia Pacific region, where large numbers of susceptible people were at risk of infection. This paper marks the 100th anniversary of that publication, and posits that, despite many public health advances, global trends increase the likelihood of yellow fever virus geographic spread. Potential reasons for the failure of the virus to spread are discussed.
