To determine how cholinergic blockade modifies the stimulus-response relationships to thermal provocations, we had seven asthmatics perform increasing levels of eucapnic hyperventilation of subfreezing air (-10.6 +/- 1.9 degrees C) after pretreatment with aerosols of saline and atropine in doses of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 6.0 mg. Changes in plasma gastrin, pancreatic polypeptide and pulse rate were examined in three adult female pigs in which venous cannulae had been placed and in two of which arterial cannulae allowed sampling of arterial blood or recording of pulse rate. Adult female rats given bilateral parasagittal knife cuts in the medial hypothalamus (VMH group) were hyperphagic and became obese on a chow diet, compared with sham-operated controls. Acute neurobehavioral deterioration during carotid artery stenting (CAS) requires prompt evaluation for serious neurological complications. We report a patient in their 70s who developed profound hyperactive delirium approximately 15 minutes after receiving prophylactic intravenous atropine (0.25 mg) during CAS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) current pediatric atropine dosing practices. Emphasis was placed on rationale for dosing and knowledge regarding current literature and guidelines. An electronic survey was deployed by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)'s survey department to a total of 2,905 CRNAs who are current AANA members.
