BACKGROUND: There are limited studies investigating the relationship between oral release osmotic system-methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) doses and plasma methylphenidate (MPH) concentrations in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the doses of OROS-MPH and the plasma levels of the drug. We also examined the effects of the other drugs including aripiprazole, risperidone, fluoxetine, and sertraline on the levels of the MPH in the plasma.
METHODS: The files of 100 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) subjects (76 male, 24 female) who w

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological functioning in children with Tourette syndrome (TS) has been characterized by subtle deficits in response inhibition, visual-motor integration, and fine-motor coordination. The association of these deficits with the tics of the TS versus co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has not been well understood because of small sample sizes and lack of adequate control conditions. We examined neuropsychological functioning in relatively large and well-characterized samples of children categorized as TS, TS-plus-ADHD, ADHD, and unaffected controls.

To determine the frequency of learning disabilities (LD) and describe the neuropsychological profile of children with Tourette's syndrome (TS) with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), we analyzed psychosocial, psychoeducational, and neuropsychological data from 65 children between the ages of 6 and 14 years selected from a larger study of LD. Three groups were formed: TS only, TS+ADHD, and TS +/- ADHD. The third group was composed of children whose ADHD status was not as strongly confirmed by the three different instruments used for ADHD diagnosis. From other (non-TS)

BACKGROUND: It has long been recognized that bipolar disorder (BD) and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) co-occur in an uncertain proportion of patients, recognized commonly in juvenile years. There is growing suspicion that such co-occurrence is associated with several clinically unfavorable characteristics. Accordingly, we compared 703 type I or II BD subjects with vs. without a lifetime diagnosis of ADHD.
METHODS: We compared 173 BD patients with vs. 530 without co-occurring ADHD for selected demographic and clinical factors, using standard initial bivariate comparisons follo

OBJECTIVE: There is some evidence to suggest that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and juvenile bipolar disorder could be related. This is based on studies of comorbidity and some preliminary family study data. However, doubts continue to be raised about the relationship between the two disorders. This study examined the comorbidity of disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) that include ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) in juvenile bipolar disorder.
METHOD: Seventy-three subjects with onset of bipolar disorder at age 18 years or younger were evalu

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder and sleeping difficulties. Sleeping disorders are reported in more than 50% of children with ADHD. On the other hand, symptoms of sleep disorder, inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness can imitate the symptoms of ADHD. We describe a 5(1/2)-year-old boy with symptoms of attention deficit and social withdrawal. His sleep was disturbed, with late sleep onset and frequent awakening during the night. After correction of his sleep pattern, the symptoms of attention defici

This article discusses the relationship between attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD). The relevant literature is outlined, and empirical data are presented from a prospective follow-up study of 600 speech/language-impaired children. The data show an increased prevalence of both LD and ADHD among children with early speech/language impairments. Furthermore, LD was strongly associated with ADHD in both the initial and follow-up samples. Also, the children with LD had increased rates of other psychiatric disorders (e.g., behavior disorders, mood disorders,

The goal of the current study was to test whether deficits in processing speed (PS) may be a shared cognitive risk factor in reading disability (RD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which are known to be comorbid. Literature on ADHD and RD suggests that deficits on tasks with a speeded component are seen in both of these disorders individually. The current study examined a wide range of speeded tasks in RD, ADHD, comorbid RD+ADHD, and a control group to test whether RD and ADHD have similar profiles of PS deficits, and whether these deficits are shared by the two disorders.

This study used a nonreferred sample of twins to contrast the performance of individuals with reading disability (RD; n = 93), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 52), RD and ADHD (n = 48), and neither RD nor ADHD (n = 121) on measures of phoneme awareness (PA) and executive functioning (EF). Exploratory factor analysis of the EF measures yielded underlying factors of working memory, inhibition, and set shifting. Results revealed that ADHD was associated with inhibition deficits, whereas RD was associated with significant deficits on measures of PA and verbal working memory. Th

The authors used pupillary dilations to test whether divided attention deficits in youth-onset psychosis and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were because of limitations in recruitment of cognitive resources or abnormalities in attention allocation. Eight- to 19-year-olds with youth-onset psychosis or ADHD were administered a divided attention test consisting of an auditory digit span (DS) task and a simple visual response time (RT) task. In 4 conditions, participants performed neither (no task), 1 (DS or RT only), or both tasks (dual). Dependent variables were DS accuracy, RT,

Although there is extensive literature about the effects of stimulants on sustained attention tasks in attentional deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), little is known about the effect of these drugs on other attentional tasks involving different neural systems. In this study we measured the effect of stimulants on ADHD children, both in the electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during sustained attentional tasks and in psychometric performance during selective attentional tasks. These tasks are known to rely on different cortical networks. Our results in children medicated with 10 mg of d-

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have suggested that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with abnormalities in basal ganglia and prefrontal cortical functioning. However, these studies have primarily relied upon cognitive tasks that reflect impulse control rather than attentional mechanisms.
METHOD: The authors used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural correlates of selective and divided attention in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pharmacological challenge with methylphenidate in 15 adolescents with ADHD (ages 14-17), eight adolesc

We investigated the involvement of adiponectin in the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), using a multi-pronged approach integrating cord blood adiponectin concentrations, polygenic risk scores derived from publicly available GWAS summary statistics, and Mendelian randomization. This study aimed to evaluate both upstream genetic influences and downstream adiponectin-level associations. Using a combination of longitudinal cord blood data (N = 531) and genome-wide association studies of ADHD (N = 55,374) and adiponectin (N = 46,434), we examined observational, genetic

Growing evidence suggests that alterations in the connectivity profile of the large-scale brain networks underpin attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the impact of the brain's asymmetric flow of information on these alterations is unknown. Here, we investigate the brain's asymmetric flow of information in ADHD (N = 355; Control = 189, age = 11.74(2.32); ADHD = 166, age = 11.16(2.20)) using transfer entropy (TE). We report that ADHD is associated with two distinct patterns of the brain's flow of information: the one in which the flow of information is decreased in ADHD and

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder that frequently persists into adulthood with 3% of adult women having a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Many women are diagnosed and treated during their reproductive years, which leads to management implications during pregnancy and the postpartum period. We know from clinical practice that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms frequently become challenging to manage during the perinatal period and require additional support and attention. There is often uncertainty amo

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have found Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to be associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes as well as with early risk factors; however it is not clear whether these associations reflect causal effects. Alternatives to traditional observational studies are needed to investigate causality: one such design is Mendelian randomization (MR), which uses genetic variants as instrumental variables for the exposure.
METHODS: In this review we summarise findings from approximately 50 studies using MR to examine potentially causal associations

BACKGROUND: Individuals with trichotillomania (TTM), a disorder characterized by repetitive pulling out of one's own hair, often have co-occurring ADHD, but little is known about this comorbidity. Additionally, there have been intimations in the literature that treatment of ADHD with stimulants may worsen TTM symptoms. This study aims to examine clinical aspects of individuals with TTM and co-occurring ADHD.
METHODS: 308 adults with a current diagnosis of TTM were assessed for ADHD using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 7.0.2 and Adult ADHD Self Report Scale. Participants als

Classification of Attention Deficit-/Hyperactivity Disorder in ICD-11 Abstract. The article gives a brief overview of the modifications to the classification of hyperkinetic disorders/attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders according to ICD-11. Fortunately, these modifications are based on DSM-5, both in terms of their designation and the internal differentiation of the diagnosis. That the ICD-10 relinquishes the combination diagnosis of hyperkinetic conduct disorder in favor of multiple diagnoses is also to be welcomed. On the one hand, the renunciation of an exact operationalization of the
