Speech perception in children with speech output disorders.

Research in the field of speech production pathology is dominated by describing deficits in output. However, perceptual problems might underlie, precede, or interact with production disorders. The present study hypothesizes that the level of the production disorders is linked to level of perception disorders, thus lower-order production problems (such as childhood apraxia of speech; CAS) are linked to lower-order perception problems and higher-order production problems (phonological disorder; PD) are linked to higher-order perception problems. For this, various perception tasks were administer

Furlow Palatoplasty and Tonsillectomy for Treating Patients With Submucous Cleft Palate and Tonsillar Hypertrophy: A One-Stage Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate are more liable to have obstructive sleep apnea than children with normal palate due to narrow airways. Tonsillar hypertrophy is a common cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; hence, it is not surprising to be encountered during cleft palate repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of tonsillectomy and Furlow palatoplasty performed as a 1-stage operation in patients presenting with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and tonsillar hypertrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven pediatric patients with SMCP and hypertrophied tonsils were i

Differences in AERP responses and atypical hemispheric specialization in 17-month-old children at risk of dyslexia.

To determine the auditory event-related potential (AERP) correlates of phoneme perception in 17-month-old children at risk of dyslexia and controls, AERPs were elicited by standard (/bAk/) and deviant (/dAk/) word stimuli presented in an oddball paradigm. The at-risk children tended to show delayed P1 and P2 peaks for standard stimuli. Hemispheric group differences were observed for N2 amplitude and P1 latency, suggesting atypical processing of spoken words in at-risk children. Larger P2 and to a lesser extent P1 amplitudes following deviant words occurred in the control but not in the at-risk

A Multi-Sample Comparison and Rasch Analysis of the Evaluation of Children's Listening and Processing Skills Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: Assessing listening difficulties and associated complaints can be challenging. Often, measures of peripheral auditory functions are within normal ranges, making clinicians feel unsure about proper management strategies. The range and nature of observed or experienced difficulties might be better captured using a qualitative measure. The Evaluation of Children's Listening and Processing Skills (ECLiPS) questionnaire was designed to broadly profile the auditory and cognitive problems often present in children with listening difficulties. This 38-item questionnaire was initially stand

Clinical correlates of individuals with and without misophonia in the U.S.: Results from a population-based study.

Misophonia is a disorder characterized by strong negative affective, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to specific sounds (e.g., chewing, swallowing). Studies have begun to investigate co-occurring psychological and audiological disorders with misophonia, but are limited by methodology and generalizability. This study investigated the rate of comorbid disorders in a sample of individuals with and without misophonia using a nationally representative sample in the United States. Data were collected through Ipsos KnowledgePanel-a large, probability-based web panel that is represe

Poor anchoring limits dyslexics' perceptual, memory, and reading skills.

The basic deficits underlying the severe and persistent reading difficulties in dyslexia are still highly debated. One of the major topics of debate is whether these deficits are language specific, or affect both verbal and non-verbal stimuli. Recently, Ahissar and colleagues proposed the "anchoring-deficit hypothesis" (Ahissar, Lubin, Putter-Katz, & Banai, 2006), which suggests that dyslexics have a general difficulty in automatic extraction of stimulus regularities from auditory inputs. This hypothesis explained a broad range of dyslexics' verbal and non-verbal difficulties. However, it was

Cognition in relation to non-auditory or multisensory hallucinations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders: A scoping review.

Multisensory hallucinations refer to unusual perceptual events in the absence of corresponding stimuli, experienced in two or more sensory modalities. Within the schizophrenia-spectrum disorder literature, the cognitive correlates of multisensory and non-auditory hallucinations remain largely unknown. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise research that explored relationships between cognition and non-auditory and multisensory hallucinations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Published, peer-reviewed, empirical research studies were sought through three databases: Web of Science, Sc

Performance of the phonatory deviation diagram in the evaluation of rough and breathy synthesized voices.

INTRODUCTION: Voice disorders alter the sound signal in several ways, combining several types of vocal emission disturbances and noise. The phonatory deviation diagram is a two-dimensional chart that allows the evaluation of the vocal signal based on the combination of periodicity (jitter, shimmer, and correlation coefficient) and noise (Glottal to Noise Excitation) measurements. The use of synthesized signals, where one has a greater control and knowledge of the production conditions, may allow a better understanding of the physiological and acoustic mechanisms underlying the vocal emission a

Manual circumlaryngeal therapy for functional dysphonia: an evaluation of short- and long-term treatment outcomes.

Manual circumlaryngeal therapy (manual laryngeal musculoskeletal tension reduction) was used to treat 25 consecutive functional dysphonia patients. Pre- and post-treatment audio recordings of connected speech and sustained vowel samples were submitted to auditory-perceptual and acoustical analysis to assess the immediate and long-term effects of a single treatment session. To complement audio recordings, subjects were interviewed in follow-up regarding the stability of treatment effects. Pre- and post-treatment comparisons demonstrated significant voice improvements. No significant differences

Impaired detection of variable duration embedded tones in ectopic NZB/BINJ mice.

Utilizing rodent models, prior research has demonstrated a significant association between focal neocortical malformations (i.e. induced microgyria, molecular layer ectopias), which are histologically similar to those observed in human dyslexic brains, and rate-specific auditory processing deficits as seen in language impaired populations. In the current study, we found that ectopic NZB/BINJ mice exhibit significant impairments in detecting a variable duration 5.6 kHz tone embedded in a 10.5 kHz continuous background, using both acoustic reflex modification and auditory event-related potential

N-acetyl-cysteine prevents age-related hearing loss and the progressive loss of inner hair cells in γ-glutamyl transferase 1 deficient mice.

Genetic factors combined with oxidative stress are major determinants of age-related hearing loss (ARHL), one of the most prevalent disorders of the elderly. Dwarf grey mice, Ggt1dwg/dwg, are homozygous for a loss of function mutation of the g-glutamyl transferase 1 gene, which encodes an important antioxidant enzyme critical for the resynthesis of glutathione (GSH). Since GSH reduces oxidative damage, we hypothesized that Ggt1dwg/dwg mice would be susceptible to ARHL. Surprisingly, otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonic potentials, which reflect cochlear outer hair cell (OHC) function

Acoustic-Aerodynamic Voice Outcome Ratios Identify Changes in Vocal Function Following Vocal Fold Medialization for Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether ratio-based measures that combine acoustic (output) and aerodynamic (input) parameters detect postoperative change in vocal function following vocal fold medialization for unilateral vocal fold paralysis. METHOD: Pre- and postoperative acoustic and aerodynamic measures were analyzed retrospectively from 149 patients who underwent vocal fold medialization for unilateral vocal fold paralysis. A 2 × 2 repeated-measures analysis of variance was conducted for each of four acoustic-aerodynamic ratios-traditional vocal efficiency (VE), sound pressure le

Spatial metric in blindness: behavioural and cortical processing.

Visual modality dominates spatial perception and, in lack of vision, space representation might be altered. Here we review our work showing that blind individuals have a strong deficit when performing spatial bisection tasks (Gori et al., 2014). We also describe the neural correlates associated with this deficit, as blind individuals do not show the same ERP response mimicking the visual C1 reported in sighted people during spatial bisection (Campus et al., 2019). Interestingly, the deficit is not always evident in late blind individuals, and it is dependent on blindness duration. We report th

Effects of aging on auditory processing of speech.

The focus of this paper is on the effects of age on speech perception, with reference to pertinent psychoacoustic findings. The difficulties of older listeners are related to the well-known effects of high-frequency hearing loss on speech perception in quiet, and to temporal processing declines not predictable from the audiogram that account for reduced ability to listen in complex, noisy conditions. We also discuss issues of research interpretation; e.g. the need for researchers and clinicians to be alert to the frequent confound between degree of hearing loss and age. The implications of age

Crossmodal temporal order and processing acuity in developmentally dyslexic young adults.

We investigated crossmodal temporal performance in processing rapid sequential nonlinguistic events in developmentally dyslexic young adults (ages 20-36 years) and an age- and IQ-matched control group in audiotactile, visuotactile, and audiovisual combinations. Two methods were used for estimating 84% correct temporal acuity thresholds: temporal order judgment (TOJ) and temporal processing acuity (TPA). TPA requires phase difference detection: the judgment of simultaneity/nonsimultaneity of brief stimuli in two parallel, spatially separate triplets. The dyslexic readers' average temporal perfo
