Atropine autoinjectors are issued to aviators for use in the event of organophosphate poisoning on the battlefield. This investigation assessed the effects of unchallenged 2 mg and 4 mg doses on flight performance, vision, tracking, cognitive performance, and electroencephalograms of 12 Army aviators. Aviators are required to maintain a high level of alertness during their missions. Two conditions that may disrupt this alertness are fatigue and hypersomnia. Fatigue is a physiological state, while hypersomnia is a pathologic state, also termed excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), which is manifested by the tendency to fall asleep in inappropriate places or situations, such as during flight or driving. Hypersomnolence may be diagnosed by subjective measurements, such as the Epworth sleepiness scale, but the diagnosis is established by two objective tests: the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)

Aircrew exposure to radiation was measured on several long-haul flights using two small commercial electronic personal dosemeters: one was a photon dosemeter, the NRF20; the other was a neutron dosemeter, the NRY21-both manufactured by Fuji Electric Systems Co.
