Associations between adverse childhood experiences and eating disorder psychopathology and intuitive eating in Chinese adult men and women: Variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common risk factors for a range of maladaptive physical and psychological health outcomes, including eating disorder (ED) psychopathology. However, most research to date has focused on traditional, thinness-oriented ED psychopathology in Western samples, with limited evidence regarding the potential links between ACEs and other diverse eating-related outcomes, particularly in non-Western contexts (e.g., China). This study examined associations between ACEs and a range of eating-related outcomes, including thinness- and muscularity-oriented ED psychopath

Pathological Eating Patterns in Adults Displaying Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: A Scoping Review.

AIM: Numerous studies have now shown that those with eating disorders have statistically higher rates of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, much less is known about the eating behaviours of adults with OCD. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise the existing literature describing pathological eating behaviours in adults with OCD and/or obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. METHOD: The databases PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and PsychNet were searched in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RESULTS: Fift

Prevalence of pica and rumination behaviours in adults and associations with eating disorder and general psychopathology: findings form a population-based study.

AIMS: Pica and rumination disorder are known as feeding disorder diagnoses in childhood, but little is known about their occurrence in adulthood. This study aimed to assess prevalence rates of one-time and recurrent pica and rumination behaviours (PB and RB) in adults, including sociodemographic subgroups, and to examine associations with other eating disorder and general psychopathology. METHODS: The representative population sample (N = 2403) completed measures on PB and RB, symptoms of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), body image and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Eating Disorders in the Context of Gastrointestinal Diseases-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: The clinical overlap between gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and psychiatric disorders represents a challenge in clinical practice. Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), may co-occur with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and complicate their management. Orthorexia nervosa is a proposed and emerging construct characterized by pathological preoccupation with healthy eating and rigid dietary practices. This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence reg

[Food intake regulation - 2nd part].

The review article summarizes the principles of hedonic regulation of food intake which represents the food intake independent on the maintenance of homeostasis. The theory describing hedonic regulation, so called Incentive Salience Theory, comprises three major processes: liking (positive attribution to food stimulus), wanting (motivation to gain it) and learning (identification of these stimuli and distinguishing them from those connected with aversive reaction). Neuronal reward circuits are the anatomical and functional substrates of hedonic regulation. They react to gustatory and olfactory

Core Deficits and Eating Behaviors in Children with Autism: The Role of Executive Function.

Background: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently experience eating-related behavioral difficulties; however, the relationships among these difficulties, core ASD deficits, and executive function remain poorly understood. The present study examined how core ASD characteristics-restrictive and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) and social impairments-relate to eating behaviors, including food approach and avoidance tendencies. In addition, the study explored whether executive function serves as a mediating mechanism underlying these associations. Methods: A total of 184 children aged

Inpatient hospital course and self-reported symptomatology in underweight adults with ARFID compared to age- and sex-matched controls with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) has similar prevalence to anorexia nervosa (AN) in adults, but research in this population is lacking. Although inpatient or residential treatment involving nutritional rehabilitation is increasingly recommended for malnourished individuals with ARFID, best practices remain poorly defined. Existing studies on self-reported symptomatology and treatment course and outcome are primarily in child and adolescent cohorts and demonstrate inconsistent findings. This study aimed to compare hospital course and self-reported symptomatology of u…

Investigating ghrelin and its isoforms in eating disorders: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are serious psychiatric conditions disorders characterized by impairments in appetite regulation and energy balance. Among the biological factors implicated in their pathophysiology, the orexigenic hormone ghrelin and its isoforms (acyl-ghrelin [AG] and desacyl-ghrelin [DAG]) have been shown to play a key role in appetite regulation and may contribute to the maintenance of disordered eating behaviors. METHODS: A systematic review of existing literature and meta-analysis were conducted, including 80 studies examining fasting blood levels of ghrelin, AG, and D

Prevalence of pica and rumination behaviors in German children aged 7-14 and their associations with feeding, eating, and general psychopathology: a population-based study.

Despite potentially severe medical consequences of pica and rumination disorder (RD), little is known about their prevalence and association with other psychopathology in childhood. As a part of a larger population-based study, 804 children aged 7-14 years and their parents were asked about their experience of pica and RD behaviors, and associated eating, feeding and general psychopathology. A total of 12.31 and 11.49% of the participants reported having engaged in pica or RD behaviors, respectively, at least once. Recurring pica or RD behaviors had been experienced by 4.98 and 1.49% of the pa
