Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy is currently the most effective treatment for non-infiltrating bladder tumors. Although rare, « BCGitis », local or disseminated, is a serious complication of this therapy. The diagnosis is difficult and often delayed but the infection may progress to multi-systemic failure and can be fatal. The microbiological samples are often negative, and biopsies sometimes do not help. Treatment consists of antimycobacterial agents in combination with corticosteroids in case of severe presentation.

In this work we investigated the enzymes produced by Bacillus aryabhattai BA03, particularly in those involved in ligninolytic activities such as laccases (Lac), lignin peroxidases (LiP) and Mn-dependent peroxidase (MnD-P). In this way, the maximal production of Lac (0.069 ± 0.000 U/mL) was obtained at pH 9, and 37 ºC after 72 h. LiP expressed the highest activity at 96 h in acid medium at 37 ºC (0.741 ± 0.029 U/mL). Bacillus anthracis, the etiologic agent of anthrax, is characteristically susceptible to penicillin despite containing two chromosomal β-lactamase genes. Few naturally occurring penicillin-resistant B. anthracis isolates have been reported. AP631, a virulent bacteriophage of Bacillus anthracis, is widely used in China to identify anthrax bacteria. In this study, we report the complete AP631 phage genome sequence as well as comparative genomic analysis with other bacteriophages of B. cereus and related species. The new highly effective Bacillus anthracis phages Negev_SA, Carmel_SA, and Tavor_SA were isolated from soil samples, and their complete genomes were sequenced and analyzed. The isolated phages have potential use in future phage therapy treatment against anthrax.

Intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the treatment of choice for superficial bladder carcinoma. Disseminated BCG infection presenting as granulomatous hepatitis or pneumonitis is a very rare complication of this treatment. Here we report a case series of seven patients previously treated with BCG presenting with pneumonitis. In two of the cases, identification of Mycobacterium bovis was achieved with molecular methods.
