The Streptomyces strains CHR3 and CHR28, isolated from the Baltimore Inner Harbor, contained two and one, respectively, giant linear plasmids which carry terminally bound proteins. The plasmids pRJ3L (322 kb), from CHR3, and pRJ28 (330 kb), from CHR28, carry genes homologous to the previously characterized chromosomal Streptomyces lividans 66 operon encoding resistance against mercuric compounds. Both plasmids are transmissible (without any detectable rearrangement) to the chloramphenicol-resistant S. lividans TK24 strain lacking plasmids and carrying a chromosomal deletion of the mer operon.

A slow migrating minor albumin component, representing 5% of total circulating albumin, was detected by routine serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation. After treatment with 5 mM dithiothreitol the abnormal component was found to migrate normally suggesting the attachment of some component to the free thiol at position 34. Lampit (BAY 2502, Nifurtimox) was tested in experimental Wistar strain white rats with acute infection induced by Trypanosoma rhodesiense strain (180 TS1A1), which normally contains cytoplasmic granules of both Type (I) & (II). Lampit injected subcutaneously in low doses of 25, 50, 100, and 250 mg/kg b-w as one-time application, gave no effect. When repeated higher doses (500 mg/kg b-w) was given a reasonable effect was achieved and formation of additional granules in T. rhodesiense was noticed. In experimental animals, some what higher initial doses appear to be particularly advantageous.
