Electric field-induced emission enhancement and modulation in individual CdSe nanowires.

CdSe nanowires show reversible emission intensity enhancements when subjected to electric field strengths ranging from 5 to 22 MV/m. Under alternating positive and negative biases, emission intensity modulation depths of 14 ± 7% are observed. Individual wires are studied by placing them in parallel plate capacitor-like structures and monitoring their emission intensities via single nanostructure microscopy. Observed emission sensitivities are rationalized by the field-induced modulation of carrier detrapping rates from NW defect sites responsible for nonradiative relaxation processes. The excl

Dual object graph and bisimulation metric for object-goal navigation in unfamiliar environment.

Object-goal navigation aims to guide an agent to find a specific target object in an unfamiliar environment based on first-person visual observations. It requires the agent to learn informative visual representations and robust navigation policy. To promote these two components, we propose two complementary techniques, dual object graph (DOG) and bisimulation metric (BM). DOG integrates current and historical object relationships, including category proximity and spatial correlation. It constructs a current object graph (COG) to model real-time object relationships and maintains a historical o

A modality-specific dysfunction of pain processing in schizophrenia.

Clinical observations showed that schizophrenia (SCZ) patients reported little or no pain under various conditions that are commonly associated with intense painful sensations, leading to a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. However, this phenomenon has received little attention and its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we conducted two experiments combining psychophysics, electroencephalography (EEG), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques to investigate neural mechanisms of pain insensitivity in SCZ patients. Specifically, we adopted a stimulus-resp

Recording electrical activity from the brain of behaving octopus.

Octopuses, which are among the most intelligent invertebrates,1,2,3,4 have no skeleton and eight flexible arms whose sensory and motor activities are at once autonomous and coordinated by a complex central nervous system.5,6,7,8 The octopus brain contains a very large number of neurons, organized into numerous distinct lobes, the functions of which have been proposed based largely on the results of lesioning experiments.9,10,11,12,13 In other species, linking brain activity to behavior is done by implanting electrodes and directly correlating electrical activity with observed animal behavior.

The early changes in behavior and the myelinated fibers of the white matter in the Tg2576 transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Recently, increasing evidences have indicated that abnormal behavior and white matter changes had appeared before senile plaques were formed in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the exact nature of these changes in behavior and white matter structure in early AD are unclear. This study used the Morris water maze, an ELISA assay, a transmission electron microscopic technique and new stereological methods to investigate the behavior, Aβ protein expression and white matter structure of Tg2576 transgenic mice at four ages. Only 10 months of age, the time latency in the Morris water maze tasks for

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent difficulties in social communication and behavior regulation. Although behavioral and pharmacological interventions exist, many yield limited improvements in these core areas. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has shown potential for enhancing social and cognitive functions in individuals with ASD. This study evaluated the impact of tDCS, applied over the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC), on social communication and behavioral outcomes in children and adoles

Testosterone and aggressive behavior in man.

Atavistic residues of aggressive behavior prevailing in animal life, determined by testosterone, remain attenuated in man and suppressed through familial and social inhibitions. However, it still manifests itself in various intensities and forms from; thoughts, anger, verbal aggressiveness, competition, dominance behavior, to physical violence. Testosterone plays a significant role in the arousal of these behavioral manifestations in the brain centers involved in aggression and on the development of the muscular system that enables their realization. There is evidence that testosterone levels

Chronic administration of typical, but not atypical neuroleptics induce persisting alterations in rest-activity cycles in rats.

The behavior of rats administered chronic neuroleptics was observed using an extremely sensitive, computerized device which detected any cage movements, thereby continuously monitoring even very small levels of activity. In the first experiment, it was found that normal rats have a strong rest-activity rhythm with a cycle length of 60-70 min, whereas rats which have been chronically administered either haloperidol (HAL) or fluphenazine (FLU) decanoate for 20 months show a distinct lengthening of this cycle and that this effect persists long after cessation of drug injections. In a second exper

Using human brain imaging studies as a guide toward animal models of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous and poorly understood mental disorder that is presently defined solely by its behavioral symptoms. Advances in genetic, epidemiological and brain imaging techniques in the past half century, however, have significantly advanced our understanding of the underlying biology of the disorder. In spite of these advances clinical research remains limited in its power to establish the causal relationships that link etiology with pathophysiology and symptoms. In this context, animal models provide an important tool for causally testing hypotheses about biological proces

Pumilio-2 function in the mouse nervous system.

Coordinated mRNA translation at the synapse is increasingly recognized as a critical mechanism for neuronal regulation. Pumilio, a translational regulator, is known to be involved in neuronal homeostasis and memory formation in Drosophila. Most recently, the mammalian Pumilio homolog Pumilio-2 (Pum2) has been found to play a role in the mammalian nervous system, in particular in regulating morphology, arborization and excitability of neuronal dendrites, in vitro. However, the role of Pum2 in vivo remains unclear. Here, we report our investigation of the functional and molecular consequences of
