Naegleria fowleri and Risk of Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis in a Changing Climate: A Scoping Review of Biomedical Literature.

Objective:Naegleria fowleri, known as the brain-eating amoeba, is a thermophilic, freshwater amoeba causing primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a disease that progresses rapidly from symptom onset to death. Climate change is causing surface water temperatures to increase, providing a hospitable environment for N. fowleri, possibly increasing risk factors for PAM. This review synthesizes the peer-reviewed biomedical literature published between January 2012 and December 2025, examining the risk of N. fowleri infection in the context of a warming climate. Methods: A scoping review was con

Education, Tooth Loss, and Dental Visits: Evidence from Schooling Reforms.

Numerous studies have shown that education correlates with tooth loss and dental services use, but whether expanding educational opportunities would reduce tooth loss and improve dental attendance remains unclear given that prior studies lacked a study design to assess causality. We leveraged a policy reform, raising the school leaving age, as an instrumental variable (IV) to estimate the effect of education on edentulism and dental visits in the United States using the repeated cross-sectional data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS; N = 463,878). We additionally exami…

Influence of family history of cardiovascular disease on clinicians' preventive recommendations and subsequent adherence of patients without cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Family history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an independent risk factor for CVD. Therefore, efforts to prevent CVD among asymptomatic persons with a family history are warranted. Little is known about preventive recommendations clinicians offer their patients with a family history of CVD, and adherence to preventive recommendations by patients at risk for CVD has not been well described. METHODS: We used the 2007 Oregon Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to evaluate among 2,566 adults without CVD associations between family history of CVD and (a) clinician recommendat…

Increasing cannabis use among U.S. Adults: Greater growth among historically lower-use groups, BRFSS 2016-2024.

OBJECTIVES: Cannabis use in the United States has increased in recent years, with expanding legalization, lower perceived risk, and greater availability proposed as potential contributing factors. This study examined whether groups with historically lower cannabis use experienced larger increases over time and whether patterns of frequency of use differed across demographic and behavioral groups. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2016-2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a large, population-based survey of U.S. adults. Trends in past 30-day cannabis use were assessed using…

Subtypes of adverse childhood experiences and depression among adult cancer survivors: Evidence from a population-based study.

Depression is highly prevalent among cancer survivors and is associated with poorer health outcomes and quality of life. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for adult depression; however, limited research has examined the role of specific ACE subtypes in depression among cancer survivors. Data for this study were obtained from the 2019-2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. An analytic sample of 72,380 adult cancer survivors aged 18 and above (56.1% female) was analyzed. Nine ACE subtypes were assessed. Diagnosis of depression was the primary…

HIV among women in the District of Columbia: an evolving epidemic?

The epidemiology of HIV in urban centers of the United States such as the District of Columbia (DC) is dynamic with rates of new HIV and AIDS diagnoses as well as risk factors elevated. Correlates of HIV among heterosexual women extend beyond traditional, individual risk factors to structural factors. The purpose of this study was to compare proportions of HIV and correlates of HIV among women participating in National HIV behavioral surveillance (NHBS) system in 2006-7 (NHBS Cycle 1) and 2010 (NHBS Cycle 2). Analysis of 677 female participants at elevated risk for HIV revealed high prevalence

Clustering of health risk behaviors among adolescents in Kilifi, Kenya, a rural Sub-Saharan African setting.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents tend to experience heightened vulnerability to risky and reckless behavior. Adolescents living in rural settings may often experience poverty and a host of risk factors which can increase their vulnerability to various forms of health risk behavior (HRB). Understanding HRB clustering and its underlying factors among adolescents is important for intervention planning and health promotion. This study examines the co-occurrence of injury and violence, substance use, hygiene, physical activity, and diet-related risk behaviors among adolescents in a rural setting on the Keny
