More than one in three adult patients suffering from narcolepsy-cataplexy experience rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder (RBD), while RBD in childhood is extremely rare. We present the cases of two girls (aged 9 and 7 years old) with narcolepsy-cataplexy, in whom RBD was one of the first symptoms of the disease. The coincidence of RBD was seen by nocturnal video-polysomnography (v-PSG), and narcolepsy was diagnosed from short sleep latency and multiple sleep onset REMs (SOREMs) during a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). Both girls were human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQB1 *0602 positive

This study examined change prospectively in autism symptoms and maladaptive behaviors during a 4.5 year period in 241 adolescents and adults with an autism spectrum disorder who were 10-52 years old (mean = 22.0) when the study began. Although many individuals' symptoms remained stable, a greater proportion of the sample experienced declines than increases in their level of autism symptoms and maladaptive behaviors, and there were significant improvements in mean levels of symptoms. Individuals with mental retardation had more autism symptoms and maladaptive behaviors than those without mental

OBJECTIVE: The present work investigates differences in psychiatric symptoms and self-injurious behaviors among different forms of purging behavior in eating disorders (ED).
METHOD: The sample was composed of 398 subjects consecutively referred to an outpatient ED unit.
RESULTS: Both in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), psychiatric symptoms were significantly more serious in purging compared to nonpurging groups, while no significant difference emerged among divergent forms of purging behaviors. The presence of multiple methods to control weight appeared to be a predictor of im

OBJECTIVE: We tested the predictive utility of symptoms for proposed DSM-IV definitions of the disruptive behavior disorders using indices corrected for symptom and diagnosis base rates.
METHOD: The field trials sample consisted of 440 clinic-referred youths who were consecutive referrals to a heterogeneous group of mental health clinics. Multiple informants were interviewed to determine the presence of symptoms and diagnoses.
RESULTS: Some symptoms which were either not in DSM-III or DSM-III-R, or were modifications of DSM-III-R symptoms, had greater diagnostic efficiency than did several e

This study focused on the relationship between personality dispositions, self-reported somatic symptoms, and health-related behaviors in undergraduate students. Findings are presented which indicate systematic correlations between health complaints and negative affectivity (NA), a common and pervasive mood disposition. Generally, there was a stronger relationship between NA and self-reported somatic symptoms than between NA and variables reflecting health-related behaviors, lifestyle, and general fitness. Significant correlations between health complaints and capacity for imaginative involveme

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most common interventions for depression and has two key components: Cognitive Restructuring (CR) and Behavioral Activation (BA). However, no evidence-based guidelines exist to help clients and clinicians decide whether CBT would be a good first-line treatment for a given individual based on their personal characteristics, and which CBT intervention would benefit them more. We propose that specific capacities to learn from new information and experiences are prerequisites for response to CBT and that BA and CR require different lea

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) delivered by an AI chatbot versus human peer counselors (participants were told it was AI) in reducing anxiety symptoms in young adults.
METHODS: Ninety young adults with mild-to-severe anxiety were randomized to a 4-week intervention of AI-CBT (n = 30), peer-counselor-CBT (n = 30), or a no-intervention control (n = 30). The primary outcome, anxiety, was assessed at baseline, mid-point, and post-intervention. Secondary outcomes (the self-efficacy for exercise, sleep quality), psychotherapy be

Recent work supports the efficacy of Behavioral Activation (BA) over Treatment as Usual (TAU) for the negative symptoms (NS) of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder (SSD). To inform precision medicine approaches, we aimed to identify factors that moderate the effect of BA versus TAU. We performed discovery-based moderators analyses, leveraging data from a recently completed randomized controlled trial that found BA had efficacy over TAU for NS. Potential moderators were pre-treatment symptom items from common symptom scales, including items from the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Sympto

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have confirmed that digital cognitive behavioral therapy (dCBT) is an effective intervention for alleviating depressive symptoms. However, there are no specific dCBT programs available for Chinese adolescents. Therefore, we developed a smartphone-based cognitive behavioral therapy program. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of dCBT for Chinese adolescents with depressive symptoms.
METHODS: The Digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chinese Adolescents with Depressive Symptoms (CADS-D) study is a single-center, two-arm, open-label randomized

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive negative thinking may contribute to negative symptoms in psychosis. We report clinical outcomes from a pilot randomized clinical trial evaluating the feasibility and efficacy of group rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (RFCBT) added to early outpatient care (OPUS) versus OPUS alone, i.e., treatment-as-usual (TAU).
METHODS: Young adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders receiving OPUS care were randomized 1:1 to 13 weeks of group RFCBT plus OPUS or to TAU. Assessments were conducted at baseline and posttreatment. Feasibility was defined as ≥80% of part

BACKGROUND: CLN3 Batten disease, also known as Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, is a childhood-onset neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the CLN3 gene, frequently accompanied by emotional and behavioral symptoms. Although these symptoms and a reduced quality of life have been previously reported in individuals with CLN3 disease and their parents, no published comparisons with siblings exist. Furthermore, age and sex differences require further study. In a nationally representative sample (n = 20, age 7-29 years), the present study applied the ASEBA Behavior Checklists, th…

BACKGROUND: A significant number of individuals with depression in Hong Kong remain undiagnosed and untreated through traditional face-to-face psychotherapy. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) has emerged as a tool to improve access to mental health services. However, iCBT remains underdeveloped in Chinese communities, particularly in Hong Kong.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to (1) develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally and linguistically appropriate guided iCBT program for Hong Kong Chinese with depressive symptoms, and (2) explore their treatment adherence.

The behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) present complex challenges for nursing home (NH) nurses, leading to confusion and difficulties in providing effective care. To address these issues, investigating how NH nurses perceive and manage the BPSD is crucial since it can lead to the development of tailored and effective care plans. This study therefore aimed to explore the ways in which NH nurses approach the management of the BPSD by using phenomenography. The study identified five categories of assessment and four categories of intervention in managing the BPSD, with their

BACKGROUND: Evidence is limited regarding the optimal therapeutic approach for neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely used for mood disorders and behavioral symptoms in older adults with cognitive impairment, but they have limited efficacy in patients with PDD. The effect of SSRIs on hemostasis is also unclear. This report describes a patient with PDD who developed deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and hyponatremia after initiating citalopram treatment.

Dementia can be difficult for married couples for many reasons, including the introduction of caregiving burden, loss of intimacy, and financial strain. In this study, we investigated the impact of dementia staging and neuropsychiatric behavioral symptoms on the likelihood of divorce or separation for older adult married couples. For this case-control study, we used data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) Uniform dataset (UDS) versions 2 and 3. This dataset was from 2007 to 2021 and contains standardized clinical information submitted by NIA/NIH Alzheimer's Disease Resear…
