Maternal bereavement and the risk of preterm delivery: the importance of gestational age and of the precursor of preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Maternal stress during pregnancy may increase the risk of preterm delivery (PD), but the associations between stress and subtypes of PD are not clear. We investigated maternal loss of a close relative and risks of very and moderately PD (<32 and 32-36 weeks, respectively) and spontaneous and medically indicated PD. METHOD: We studied 4 940 764 live singleton births in Denmark (1978-2008) and Sweden (1973-2006). We retrieved information on death of women's family members (children, partner, siblings, parents), birth outcomes and maternal characteristics from nationwide registries.

Parents bereaved by infant death: PTSD symptoms up to 18 years after the loss.

OBJECTIVE: Losing an infant or fetus late in pregnancy, during birth or in the first year of life is a potentially traumatic event for parents. However, little is known about the factors contributing to chronic posttraumatic stress reactions in this population. The present study examined chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and potential correlates in 634 mothers and fathers up to 18 years (M=3.4 years) after the death of their infant. METHODS: Members of a private national support organization for parents bereaved by infant death were contacted and asked to participate in th

Psychiatric symptoms in bereaved versus nonbereaved youth and young adults: a longitudinal epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine potential differences in psychiatric symptoms between parent-bereaved youth (N = 172), youth who experienced the death of another relative (N = 815), and nonbereaved youth (N = 235), aged 11 to 21 years, above and beyond antecedent environmental and individual risk factors. METHOD: Sociodemographics, family composition, and family functioning were assessed one interview wave before the death. Child psychiatric symptoms were assessed during the wave in which the death was reported and one wave before and after the death. A year was selected randomly for the nonbereaved gr

Outcomes from the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) program for bereaved caregivers.

Although preventive efforts for bereaved individuals have not been shown to be particularly effective in past studies, it has been suggested that intervention effects might be underestimated due to methodological issues such as short follow-up assessments. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the efficacy (as whole intervention packages and as component parts) of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) interventions in preventing complicated grief, normal grief, and depressive symptoms at a longer term follow-up assessment among bereaved caregivers (N = 224). The role of rumination in the coexistence of distress and posttraumatic growth among bereaved Japanese university students.

This study examined the relationships between rumination, distress and posttraumatic growth (PTG). Seventy-one bereaved Japanese university students completed the PTG Inventory, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, and a rumination scale. Three models, with variables including intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination, distress, and PTG, were tested using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that 1 model, which depicted recent intrusive rumination leading to distress and deliberate rumination soon after the event leading to PTG, with distress and PTG coexisting, was shown to best fi

Plasma pyridoxine deficiency is related to increased psychological distress in recently bereaved homosexual men.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has demonstrated that a theoretical model including measures of life stressors, social support, and coping styl … that adequate pyridoxine status may be necessary to avert psychological distress in the setting of bereavement. Inasmuch as pyridoxine is a cofactor for 5-hydroxytryptophan decarboxylase--an enzyme in the biosynthesis pathway of serotonin--serotonin level in the brain is implicated as the mediating factor.

Validity and reliability of the Beck Depression Inventory-Short Form in a group of adult bereaved females.

This study investigated the reliability and validity of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) Short Form in a group of female bereaved adults. Two hundred fifty-five community-based women bereaved less than 2 years completed the BDI. Estimate of the alpha coefficient indicates that the short-form BDI possesses adequate internal reliability for this sample. Principal-component factor analysis indicated a two-factor model for depression associated with bereavement. The first factor, which combined items related to anergy and dysphoria, corresponded to the affective and behavioral components of dep…

Mental illness after bereavement before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden: A matched cohort study.

Bereavement is associated with an increased risk of mental illness. The COVID-19 pandemic caused excess mortality, and may have exacerbated the mental health impact of bereavement due to social restrictions and reduced healthcare access. Using Swedish national register data, this study aimed to compare the risk of mental illness following bereavement before (2018-2019) and during (2020-2021) the pandemic, exploring how the pandemic might have modified the psychological impact of bereavement and identifying high-risk groups. We conducted a nationwide matched cohort study including (1) 3,840,845 …

Reuniting Families With Their Dead: Repurposing the Sierra Leone Ebola Database as a Bereavement Intervention, 2018-2026.

The Sierra Leone Ebola Database Family Reunification Program (July 2018-January 2026) repurposed epidemic records to help families locate graves lost when safe burials, necessary to halt Ebola transmission in 2014 to 2016, prevented family-led burial and mourning. The program addressed 1306 of 2006 requests and identified probable sites for 65% of them. Caller feedback (n = 432) showed renewed access to mourning, with relief and continuing grief coexisting. The 3.3% uptake among more than 60 000 burials suggests many affected families remained unreached. (Am J Public Health. Published online a

Hospital-Based Perinatal Bereavement and Palliative Care: A Descriptive Study to Measure Patient Satisfaction and Care Provided.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine: 1) patient satisfaction with perinatal bereavement and palliative care services; and 2) occurrence of expected care activities provided by nurses for women who have experienced perinatal loss. BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing perinatal loss often receive care from maternity providers not trained in perinatal bereavement, thus decreasing their satisfaction with care. The psychological effects of perinatal loss as well as recent laws that affect both patients and caregivers require attention to this area of hospital-based care. METHODS: Women…

Factors Associated With Treatment Response in an Internet-Based Intervention for Prolonged Grief Disorder After Cancer Bereavement.

Internet-based psychological interventions have proven effective in the treatment of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Yet, some patients do not benefit from treatment in a clinically significant way. We aimed to examine predictors of symptom reduction in an Internet-based intervention for PGD after cancer bereavement, in order to identify possible treatment mechanisms and discern directions for future intervention design. A secondary analysis of data from a randomized wait-list controlled trial on an Internet-based intervention for PGD after cancer bereavement was conducted. Multiple regression…

Impact of bereavement care and pregnancy loss services on families: Findings and recommendations from Irish inquiry reports.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy loss and the death of their baby can be overwhelming for families, especially when the loss is unexpected. The standard of bereavement care families receive around the time of pregnancy or early infant loss can have a significant impact on their psychological recovery. At times external inquiries are carried out to identify issues in the maternity care provided and make recommendations to improve its' standard. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the impact of bereavement care provided to families around the time of pregnancy and/or early infant loss as stated in ten …

Prenatal maternal bereavement and risk of eating disorders in infants and toddlers: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal stress has been associated to a number of neuropsychiatric diseases but its role on the development of eating disorders (ED) remains unknown. Infants and toddlers with feeding or eating disorders are also at an increased risk of such diseases in later childhood and adolescence. We aimed to examine whether prenatal stress following maternal bereavement is associated with ED in infants and toddlers. METHODS: This population-based cohort study included children born from 1977 to 2008 in Denmark (N = 2,127,126) and from 1977 to 2006 in Sweden (N = 2,974,908). Children were ca…

Length of caregiving and well-being among older widowers: implications for the dual process model of bereavement.

The intent of this study was to examine if length of caregiving was associated with older widowers' adjustment to bereavement and to identify factors, based on principles underlying the Dual Process Model of Bereavement, that might mitigate the potential adverse effects of time spent caring. Two-hundred men over the age of 60 and in the second year of bereavement were identified from death records of older women who had died within a 12-month period. Interviews lasted about 2 hours and focused on widowers' experiences surrounding their wives' deaths along with questions about social support, h…

The effects of bereavement on adult sibling bone marrow donors' psychological well-being and reactions to donation.

As living organ, tissue, and bone marrow donation become increasingly prevalent treatments for a variety of diseases, better understanding of living donors' experiences, especially when the recipient does not survive after the transplant, also becomes more critical. Although some psychological outcome data exist concerning living donation, there have been no systematic prospective investigations, to date, of the psychological impact of bereavement among sibling bone marrow donors. Studies of bereavement effects in other donation settings such as unrelated bone marrow donation and related kidne…

Biological markers of grief in bereaved family members: A systematic review of cortisol, inflammatory and cardiovascular studies.

Bereavement is among life's most stressful events, and a minority of mourners develop prolonged and disabling grief. Biological markers have been proposed as signals of this risk, but no systematic review has examined them across bereaved family members or asked how well bereaved parents (parents who have lost a child) are represented. We systematically reviewed observational studies linking a cortisol/HPA-axis, inflammatory/immune, or cardiovascular/autonomic biomarker to a validated measure of coping or grief in bereaved family members of any age or relationship to the deceased (PROSPERO CRD…

The parent bereavement questionnaire: A measure of grief severity and prolonged grief disorder for parents of young children.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child causes severe, disruptive grief. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) was formally adopted as a diagnosis in DSM-5-TR in 2022. The Parent Bereavement Questionnaire (PBQ), a bereavement measure developed specifically for parents, was validated prior to these criteria, and its performance under current diagnostic standards is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of 244 mothers (>12 months post-loss) whose infants died suddenly and unexpectedly from SIDS or unascertained causes, recruited through a large-scale, multi-center prospective cohort study that …

Prolonged Grief, Depression and Loneliness Among Chinese Bereaved College Students: A Latent Class Analysis.

Bereavement may trigger a variety of psychological reactions, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), depression, and loneliness. This study aimed to explore the co-occurrence patterns of these symptoms among Chinese bereaved university students. Using latent class analysis (LCA), four distinct classes were identified: a high symptom class (22.2%), a predominantly grief class (21.9%), a moderate symptom with prominent anhedonia class (23.3%), and a low symptom class (32.6%). Individuals with poorer physical condition, rural residence, unexpected loss, or lack of opportunity to say goodbye we…

Helpers' stories of providing support to bereaved individuals following drug-related death: a narrative study.

PURPOSE: Drug-related death is a serious public health issue affecting many bereaved families. Drug-related deaths are defined as fatalities resulting directly from the consumption of narcotics, where the cause is violence, accidents, or other health disorders associated with drug use. Individuals bereaved by drug-related death represent a vulnerable group who may experience grief, shame, stigma, and a lack of support from society. METHODS: This article draws on a focus group study involving 29 helpers, examining their narratives about helpful support for individuals bereaved by drug-related

Continuity and discontinuity of end-of-life care: A grounded theory study of bereaved family caregivers' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Approaches to measuring continuity of care are underdeveloped for the end-of-life context, yet important for understanding the quality of end-of-life care. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to develop a grounded theory of continuity of care at end-of-life through the distillation and synthesis of interviews with bereaved family caregivers, which focused on perceptions and experiences of continuity of care at end-of-life. DESIGN: This qualitative study is phase III of a four-phase mixed-methods sequential explanatory study with the aim of determining which aspects of continuity of car
